Starting August 2006, a major epidemic of bluetongue (BT) was identified in North-West Europe, affecting The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg and the North of France. Myiasis--the feeding of fly larvae on living mammals--may have various presentations, depending on the tissues or organs involved. The respiratory and non-respiratory manifestations of human pharyngeal myiasis caused by Oestrus ovis larvae in 33 patients from the Fars province, in southern Iran, are described here. Prostaglandin F(2alpha) (PGF(2alpha)) typically initiates a cascade of events that leads to the functional and structural demise of the corpus luteum. A flock of 50 Lacaune ewes grazed three paddocks (approximately 17ha each) in rotation. Thirteen areas were defined in each of the two selected paddocks on the account of vegetation and spatial utilization by the ewes. These areas represented one tenth of the total area of the paddock. The effect of Fasciola hepatica on feed intake and digestibility, body weight and nitrogen balance was measured during the course of experimental infections in sheep given a diet of hay or hay with 'concentrate'. A system of paired feeding was used to allow comparisons between infected and control animals.
