A survey of benign melanocytic nevi was conducted among children in Perth, Western Australia, in 1985. Children were examined by one of a team of five nurses who counted all of their nevi. Linear regression was performed on the logarithmically transformed mole counts to assess the degree of interobserver variation. Among 2,354 white children aged 5-14 years, 3.9% of the variation in numbers of nevi of all sizes and 7.7% of the variation in nevi 2 mm or more in diameter was attributed to variation among observers. A 5-year-old girl with Wyburn-Mason syndrome was reported. A vascular nevus on the right cheek was noticed since early infancy. External strabismus and impaired vision of the right eye were noticed at 5 years of age. Fluorescein angiography showed an arteriovenous malformation on the right retina. Brain CT, MR, and right carotid angiography demonstrated an arteriovenous malformation from the orbita to the hypothalamic region along the optic nerve. This congenital vascular disorder is extremely rare.

Previous studies enumerating AgNORs in cutaneous melanocytic lesions have produced inconsistent results. A purple pigment, phyriaviolin, and a blue pigment, phyriaazulin, have been found in relatively large amounts in the urine of patients suffering from two diverse pathological conditions, porphyria cutanea tarda and Crohn's disease. The two pigments have been characterised by chemical, spectroscopic, and chromatographic studies and identified to be indirubin and indigo (indigotin). Possible reasons for their formation are discussed.

A case of dyskeratosis congenita, a rare X-linked disorder, is presented. The patient had the classic triad of cutaneous findings: reticulated hyperpigmentation, nail dystrophy, and leukoplakia. In addition, a previously unreported finding developed, avascular necrosis of bone without systemic steroid therapy. Recognition of this disorder is important because pancytopenia and malignancy develop in up to 50 percent of patients.

The inferior oblique muscles of pigmented and albino guinea pigs were compared with respect to contractile and histochemical properties. No differences were found between the 2 kinds of animal in twitch and tetanic response or in fatigue properties. They also had the same fiber composition and fiber and capillary densities of their inferior obliques. These findings indicate that differences in eye muscle previously demonstrated and Siamese (albino) cats are related to the state of binocular vision and not to genetic variations between pigmented and albino animals.

The cases of two children with giant nevi of the trunk that were excised and closed in early childhood are presented. Both had cosmetic and functional deformities and were treated by scar excision and skin grafting. The 2 cases demonstrate that excision and closure of giant nevi in young children should be discouraged, as it can result in distortion of surrounding structures.

Information on exposure and reaction to sunlight, together with the history of exposure to fluorescent lighting, was elicited by postal questionnaire. Case-control analysis from 58 patients with malignant melanoma, 182 matched controls and 151 unmatched controls showed associations between malignant melanoma and (i) bouts of painful sunburn, (ii) reaction of untanned skin to sunlight, and (iii) number of moles (on right forearm), whereas no association could be found with exposure to fluorescent light at work.

Four patients who had received silicone injections had the following complications: migration, hepatic disease manifested as granulomatous hepatitis (previously undescribed, to our knowledge), hypopigmentation, and death.
