In addition to overnight polysomnography, there are two special tests with which every sleep technologist should be familiar: the multiple sleep latency test and the maintenance of wakefulness test. These two tests classify excessive daytime sleepiness using objective data. The role of the sleep technologist is to understand and perform an accurate test so that sleep clinicians can use that data in diagnosing and treating their patients. This article provides step-by-step directions for performing these tests.

We studied 44-year old man with heart failure (ejection fraction -25%). Obesity, arterial hypertension, snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness suggested concomitant obstructive sleep apnoea. Limited polysomnography with Polymesam revealed typical Cheyne-Stokes respiration with mainly central apnoeas (RDI=48/hour). We did not find any obstructive episodes during sleep study. Patient responded to CPAP therapy and apnoea hypopnoe index decreased to 12/hour on 8 mbar pressure.

Aim of the present pilot study was to investigate whether cortically generated chemosensory event-related potentials (ERPs) can be recorded during sleep. We examined the role of children's emotional intensity and vagal functioning in predicting sleep problems in healthy elementary school-aged children. Children's dispositional emotionality was examined via parent report, and their vagal regulation was assessed via respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) during a baseline and a reaction time (RT) task. Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are confronted with many changes and problems; a lack of sleep may be one of the most prevailing difficulties they endure. Poor sleep is often the result of restless leg syndrome (RLS), periodic leg movements during sleep (PLMS), sleep apnea syndrome (SAS), or depression. Nurses who provide health care to these patients can use timely interventions to assist the patients to achieve better sleep.

This study examined sleep patterns in female adolescents with chronic musculoskeletal pain.
