The moderating role of life satisfaction and searching for meaning in life in the relationship between sleep quality and stress, anxiety, and depression in patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders are highly prevalent among hemodialysis patients and may adversely affect psychological well-being, life satisfaction, and meaning in life. However, limited research has examined the moderating roles of life satisfaction and meaning in life in the relationship between sleep quality and psychological symptoms. This study aimed to investigate whether life satisfaction and meaning in life moderate the associations between sleep quality and stress, anxiety, and depression in hemodialysis patients. METHODS: This descriptive, correlational study included 110 hemodialysis

Randomised controlled trial of online behavioural sleep intervention for children with epilepsy.

We evaluated the clinical and cost effectiveness of an online sleep intervention (COSI) for parents of children with epilepsy. We conducted a multicentre, parallel-group, unblinded, randomised controlled trial. We recruited children aged 4-12 years with epilepsy and sleep problems through 26 UK outpatient clinics. Participants were randomly assigned (1:1) via a computer-generated minimisation algorithm. The primary outcome was the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) at three months. Cost-effectiveness was estimated at six months. We conducted intention to treat analyses. 85 children w

Essential Oil-herbal Sachet Intervention for Sleep Quality and Anxiety in Maintenance Hemodialysis: A Single-center Randomized Trial.

Sleep disturbance and anxiety are common in maintenance hemodialysis patients, yet sustained non-pharmacological management remains difficult in routine dialysis care. This single-center, open-label, parallel-group randomized trial evaluated whether a combined olfactory intervention using an essential-oil preparation and a traditional Chinese herbal sachet was associated with improved self-reported sleep quality and anxiety. Eighty-eight eligible patients with a baseline Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score >7 were recruited from Yongkang Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine between

Depressive symptoms and cognitive impairment among rural Chinese older women: anxiety and poor sleep as sequential correlates-A cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms are a well-established predictor of late-life cognitive impairment. Furthermore, anxiety and sleep quality-both correlates of cognitive impairment-could mediate the depression-cognition association in older women. Nevertheless, limited research has empirically tested this hypothesis using causal mediation analysis. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited 718 older women from rural areas of Sichuan, Chongqing, and Guizhou provinces in China using convenience sampling. Trained assessors administered the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, the Chinese Version of

Greater choroid plexus volume is linked to poor sleep, neurodegeneration, and cognitive deficits in older adults: Evidence from the IGNITE Study.

INTRODUCTION: Poor sleep is associated with neurodegenerative disease, but mechanisms are unclear. Greater volume of the choroid plexus (ChP), a brain structure supporting neurotoxic waste clearance, is linked to neurodegeneration and cognitive decline. We tested whether poor sleep promotes neurodegeneration and cognitive deficits via ChP dysfunction. METHODS: Baseline magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) -derived ChP, hippocampal, ventricular, and gray matter volumes from 635 cognitively unimpaired older adults were analyzed. Sleep was measured with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and acceler

Sleep quality and disturbances in adolescents and young adults with cancer compared to a healthy comparison group: results of the AYA-LE study.

PURPOSE: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer often exhibit riskier health behaviors, including poorer sleep patterns, compared to older individuals. Research on the relationship between cancer and sleep quality in AYA patients has yielded inconsistent results. This study investigates sleep quality in AYA patients compared to a healthy comparison group and examines associated sociodemographic, clinical, and psychosocial variables as well as physical activity. METHODS: The prospective observational study included 407 AYA patients aged 18-39 years at diagnosis and 372 healthy partici

Sleep Quality and Cognitive Performance in Chronic Primary Musculoskeletal Pain: An Observational Study With Healthy Controls.

BACKGROUND: Chronic primary musculoskeletal pain (CPMP) is a recently defined diagnosis characterised by persistent pain accompanied by emotional distress and/or functional disability. Although sleep disturbances and cognitive complaints are common in individuals with chronic pain, few studies have examined their relationship in CPMP, a condition that remains underexplored. This study aimed to examine whether cognitive functioning in individuals with CPMP is affected by sleep quality, exploring its potential contribution across cognitive domains to the neuropsychological profile of this condit

Trajectories of psychopathology and sleep quality during a collective stressful event: The role of sexual minority identity, personality, and emotion regulation.

The first two years of COVID-19 triggered a significant and widespread set of stressors, which disproportionately affected minoritized populations. This study utilized the Boston College COVID-19 Sleep and Well-Being Dataset to examine changes in depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbance during a collective stressful event (CSE). Data was examined over four periods spanning from May 2020 to October 2021. Latent growth mixture modeling (LGMM) was used to identify discrete growth trajectories of the outcome measures and test for covariates associated with each trajectory. Two distinct symptom t

Sleep disruption from inhalation of biomass smoke: a basis for coincident hypertension?

BACKGROUND: Exposure to air pollution including contemporary sources like wildland fire smoke worsens cardiovascular outcomes. Although several mechanisms for these effects have been postulated, one underexplored impact of inhaled air pollution that may mediate adverse health outcomes is sleep disruption, which is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and a trigger of multiple biological pathways linked to disease. The purpose of this study was to determine whether cardiovascular responses to air pollution, especially excursions in blood pressure, are associated with contempo

The influence of chronotype on school adjustment, sleep and somatic and mental health among adolescents - nationwide sample across one school year.

Evening-type has been previously associated with sleep problems, and mental and somatic health problems among adolescents. We examined how the self-reported chronotype associates with adolescents' health and school adjustment across a school year. Participants (N = 6522) were 12-16-year-old adolescents across Finland. We used generalized linear models to analyze associations between chronotype and school adjustment, and health variables. Generalized estimating equations (GEE) were further used for longitudinal analysis on how chronotype associated with concentration in lessons and susceptibili
