Nutrient enrichment mitigates estuarine wetland CO2 emissions by reducing fungal stability and temperature sensitivity.

Increasing global nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) deposition significantly impacts carbon cycling in estuarine wetlands, yet the underlying microbial mechanisms remain unclear. This study selected the Phragmites australis wetland in the Shanyutan of the Min River Estuary as the research site. Four treatments were set up: control (CK), nitrogen (N) addition, phosphorus (P) addition, and combined nitrogen and phosphorus (NP) addition. Through a one-year in-situ experiment, we investigated how N, P, and combined NP additions regulate soil CO2 emissions, temperature sensitivity (Q10), and fungal c…

A new framework for simulating C decomposition and emissions from land applied biosolids and manures using the denitrification and decomposition model.

There is a need for modeling tools capable of estimating CO2 emissions from land application of biosolids and manure. The Denitrification and Decomposition model (DNDC) was improved for this capacity by adding a separate manure C pool to disaggregate manure decomposition from the soil organic matter pools. The effect of soil temperature on soil organic matter decomposition was also improved. Data collected from two climatically distinct sites in Montreal (Quebec) and Truro (Nova Scotia) with corn were used to test DNDC for simulating yield, soil temperature and moisture, and CO2 fluxes from so…

Immobilization of cadmium by mercapto-functionalized palygorskite under stimulated acid rain: Stability performance and micro-ecological response.

The interaction of cadmium (Cd) pollution and acid rain stress has seriously threatened soil ecosystem and human health. However, there are still few effective amendments for the in-situ remediation in the Cd-contaminated acidified soil. In this study, the performance and mechanisms of palygorskite (PAL) and mercapto-functionalized PAL (MPAL) on Cd immobilization were investigated, and the stability as well as effects on soil micro-ecology under stimulated acid rain were also explored. Results showed that MPAL could react with Cd to form stable Cd-sulfhydryl and Cd-O complexes. The reduction o…

Environmental risk factors for pulmonary Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex disease.

BACKGROUND: Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex (MAC) is a ubiquitous pathogen found in soil and water. Environmental exposure is the primary route for MAC infection. However, specific environmental risk factors have been poorly determined in immunocompetent patients with pulmonary MAC disease. METHODS: A case-control study was performed with 106 patients with pulmonary MAC disease (men [women], 23 [83]; age, 64.3 ± 9.2 years) and 53 age-matched control patients with bronchiectasis but not pulmonary MAC infection (men [women], 7[46]; age, 63.0 ± 11.0 years). All participants completed …

Inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi can increase the concentration of per and poly-fluoroalkyl substances in cereal crops.

Contamination of agricultural soils with per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is now widespread and common throughout the world due to management practices such as biosolid application. Crop and pasture plants can readily take up and accumulate PFAS in their tissues, which eventually end up in food products or livestock feed and lead to health issues. This study investigated how arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi affect plant PFAS uptake in three important cereal crop species (barley, bread wheat, durum wheat), using a combination of soils that were artificially spiked or naturally conta…

Microbial induced carbonate precipitation for immobilizing Pb contaminants: Toxic effects on bacterial activity and immobilization efficiency.

Microbial induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a natural bio-mediated process, which has been explored for soil stabilization and heavy metals immobilization in soil and groundwater. Previous studies have shown that MICP is capable of immobilizing various heavy metals including lead (Pb). However, most studies focus merely on the immobilization of heavy metals with relatively low concentration. This study: (1) presents results of an investigation into the toxic effects of Pb on bacterial activity and immobilization efficiency within a wide range of Pb concentrations; and (2) identifies co…

Cadmium-tolerant bacteria reduce the uptake of cadmium in rice: potential for microbial bioremediation.

We selected 24 bacterial isolates that could tolerate up to 2500 µM CdCl2 from the soil of rice fields downstream from a zinc-mineralized area contaminated with a high level of cadmium (Cd). In the presence of 500 µM CdCl2, all isolates grew slower and with a prolonged lag-phase compared to in the absence of Cd. Cd-binding capacity was high and ranged from 6.38 to 9.38 log[Cd(atom)]/cell. The stability of Cd complexes in bacteria was affected by 1mM EDTA. In 500 µM CdCl2, all isolates produced 0.7 to 4.8-fold more inorganic sulfide and 0.6 to 2.2-fold more thio-rich compounds containing SH gro…

Environmental determinants of phenazine- and 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol-producing Pseudomonas in the wheat rhizosphere across a precipitation gradient.

The Columbia Plateau of the Inland Pacific Northwest (IPNW) encompasses one of North America's largest dryland wheat production regions, where soil moisture strongly influences plant growth, health, and rhizosphere microbial communities. Two ecologically and genetically distinct groups of the Pseudomonas fluorescens complex naturally suppress soilborne wheat pathogens in IPNW fields by producing either phenazine-1-carboxylic acid (Phz+) or 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (Phl+). To determine how precipitation and associated soil factors shape the abundance of these bacteria, we analyzed wheat root …

Drought-Induced Accumulation of Root Exudates Supports Post-drought Recovery of Microbes in Mountain Grassland.

Droughts strongly affect carbon and nitrogen cycling in grasslands, with consequences for ecosystem productivity. Therefore, we investigated how experimental grassland communities interact with groups of soil microorganisms. In particular, we explored the mechanisms of the drought-induced decoupling of plant photosynthesis and microbial carbon cycling and its recovery after rewetting. Our aim was to better understand how root exudation during drought is linked to pulses of soil microbial activity and changes in plant nitrogen uptake after rewetting. We set up a mesocosm experiment on a meadow …

The mechanism and applicability of in situ oxidation of trichloroethylene with Fenton's reagent.

Fenton's reagent is the result of reaction between hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) and ferrous iron (Fe(2+)), producing the hydroxyl radical (-*OH). The hydroxyl radical is a strong oxidant capable of oxidizing various organic compounds. The mechanism of oxidizing trichloroethylene (TCE) in groundwater and soil slurries with Fenton's reagent and the feasibility of injecting Fenton's reagent into a sandy aquifer were examined with bench-scale soil column and batch experiment studies. Under batch experimental conditions and low pH values ( approximately 3), Fenton's reagent was able to oxidize 93-1…

Fraction distribution and leaching behavior of heavy metals in dredged sediment disposal sites around Meiliang Bay, Lake Taihu (China).

The objectives of this study were to characterize the heavy metal contamination status of surface soils sampled at two dredged sediment land disposal sites (the Baimao and Kongwan landfills) in Meiliang Bay, Lake Taihu, China, as well as to investigate the effect on their leaching behaviors due to acid rain. Among all the metals, only the nickel content in the Baimao landfill was higher than the Chinese reference value, and all metal contents were below the limit values for agricultural soils. The fraction distribution of metals by sequential extraction was similar at both sites. Cadmium had a…

Nanoplastics shift arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal mediation of bacterial community assembly from diversity to compositional stability under arsenic stress.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play a vital role in contaminated soil remediation, yet how NPs regulate AMF mediated arsenic (As) remediation under NP and As co-contamination remains unclear. This study aims to elucidate the effects of NP on the strategic shifts in AMF in response to As exposure. This study demonstrates that NP fundamentally redirect the strategy of AMF. The result shows that AMF inoculation significantly increased community diversity under individual NP or As stress. Instead, AMF orchestrated a profound restructuring of the microbial community, notably enriching key phyla…

Supplemental carbonate enhances MnCO3-mediated mitigation of Cd accumulation in wheat plants.

Cadmium (Cd) accumulation in wheat remains a major food-safety concern in Cd-contaminated weakly alkaline croplands. Under these conditions, carbonate chemistry may substantially influence Mn-mediated Cd immobilization, yet its role in regulating Cd transformation and soil-to-wheat transfer remains elusive. Here, pot experiments were conducted to investigate the coupled effects of MnCO3 and supplemental carbonate on Cd migration, transformation, and accumulation in a soil-wheat system. The results showed that MnCO3 reduced wheat grain Cd content by 40.1%, and supplemental carbonate further enh…

Carbamazepine-exposed earthworms are characterized by tissue-specific accumulation patterns and transcriptional profiles.

Pharmaceutically active compounds enter soils via wastewater reuse and biosolid application. A ubiquitous drug present in wastewater is carbamazepine, a frequently prescribed anti-convulsant. Its mode of action is not species-specific and affects the nervous system of non-target organisms, including most likely the soil dwelling earthworms, which in turn has the potential to negatively impact soil quality. In this project, soils were amended with carbamazepine to explore uptake dynamics and resultant changes in molecular and life cycle endpoints of earthworms (Dendrobaena veneta). Earthworms w…

Root exudate-derived compounds stimulate the phosphorus solubilizing ability of bacteria.

Low phosphorus (P) availability in soils is a major challenge for sustainable food production, as most soil P is often unavailable for plant uptake and effective strategies to access this P are limited. Certain soil occurring bacteria and root exudate-derived compounds that release P are in combination promising tools to develop applications that increase phosphorus use efficiency in crops. Here, we studied the ability of root exudate compounds (galactinol, threonine, and 4-hydroxybutyric acid) induced under low P conditions to stimulate the ability of bacteria to solubilize P. Galactinol, thr…

Mechanisms for the dissolved biochar promoted iron dissolution and consequential chromium release.

Biochar is widely applied in soil for agricultural and environmental purposes. Soluble fraction of biochar may be released from bulk biochar as dissolved biochar (DBC) after irrigation or rainfall. DBC had been reported to possess high chemical activity in aqueous system, while less attention was paid to the impact of DBC on the soil environmental processes. In this work, the impact of DBC on ferric (hydro) oxides was systematically examined. Our study showed that DBC prepared from rice straw could significantly promote the dissolution of ferric oxides with unstable and metastable crystalline …

Microbial communities from arid environments on a global scale. A systematic review.

Arid environments are defined by the lack of water availability, which is directly related to the mean annual precipitation (MAP), and high values of solar irradiation, which impacts the community composition of animals, plants, and the microbial structure of the soil. Recent advances in NGS technologies have expanded our ability to characterize microbiomes, allowing environmental microbiologists to explore the complete microbial structure. Intending to identify and describe the state-of-the-art of bacterial communities in arid soils at a global scale, and to address the effect that some envir…

Evaluating the toxicity of polyurethane during marine clay stabilisation.

In civil engineering, many geotechnical and forensic projects employ polyurethane (PU) for ground improvement, and the results have shown to be effective in terms of time and cost savings. However, similar to many other chemical stabilisers, the use of PU for soil stabilisation may have environmental repercussions. Therefore, this paper utilised a toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) to investigate the potential for ground contamination resulting from the application of PU for the stabilisation of marine clay. Furthermore, the hazardousness of PU during the stabilisation of marine…
