Hope has been proposed as a nonspecific process that fosters positive change by enhancing motivation and treatment engagement. However, few studies have examined the temporal dynamics of hope across multiple timepoints, limiting our understanding of its potentially iterative response to and influence on cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) outcomes. For the present study, we examined data from a clinical trial investigating predictors of non-response to exposure-based therapy for anxiety-related disorders. The sample includes the first 100 participants who completed assessments during 12 weeks of

We examined transdiagnostic and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-specific associations with multiple forms of trauma exposure within a nationwide U.S. sample (N = 1,649, 50.0% female) of military veterans overselected for PTSD. A higher-order Distress factor was estimated using PTSD, major depressive disorder (MDD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) symptoms as indicators. A structural equation model spanning three assessment points over an average of 3.85 years was constructed to examine the unique roles of higher-order Distress and PTSD-specific variance in accounting for the associ

OBJECTIVE: The dissociative subtype of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was incorporated into the diagnostic criteria for PTSD in Diagnostic and Statisical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). The subtype requires the presence of persistent or recurrent depersonalization or derealization; however, several authors have suggested that a broader array of dissociative symptoms could be included in the criteria. The objective of the present study was to gather data on a wide range of dissociative symptoms in a sample of highly traumatized individuals.
METHOD: The authors administ

The role of stressful precipitating events has long been recognized in the genesis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) also necessitates the experience of a traumatic event (PTSD criterion A). Research has demonstrated a high degree of comorbidity between these two conditions. However, few studies have examined symptom overlap as a potential cause for this co-occurrence. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to examine symptom endorsement and overlap between OCD and PTSD using a sample of trauma exposed veterans. Veterans were administered self-rep

The dissociative subtype of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was officially introduced in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). In accordance with this new classification, prior studies using Latent Class Analysis (LCA) empirically identified a subgroup of patients that were characterized by a high severity of dissociative symptoms. Despite the high prevalence of PTSD in patients with substance use disorders (SUD), however, no LCA studies on the dissociative subtype of PTSD exist in this population so far. Therefore, the current study aimed

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment is a global public health issue that encompasses physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, and exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV). This systematic review and meta-analysis summarises the association between these five forms of child maltreatment and depressive and anxiety disorders.
METHODS: Published cohort and case-control studies were included if they reported associations between any form of child maltreatment (and/or a combination of), and depressive and anxiety disorders. A total of 604 studies were assessed for eligibility, 106 met

This article presents the use of a transdiagnostic, emotion-focused treatment with a young woman with nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), social anxiety disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder. The patient also presented with subclinical depressive, posttraumatic stress, and eating disorder symptoms. The Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders (Barlow et al., 2011), a cognitive-behavioral intervention designed to be applicable across anxiety, depressive, and related disorders with strong emotional components, was used to address the range of Laura's presenting conc

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Social support is one of the three strongest predictors of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In the present study, we aimed to assess the buffering power of overt socially supportive and unsupportive behaviors from the significant other, in a group with PTSD and a comparison group.
DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 46 individuals with PTSD and 42 individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) or panic disorder (PD) completed diagnostic interviews and an anxiety-oriented social interaction with a significant other. Heart rate of participants was continuously m

In an attempt to better understand the nature of emotion dysregulation in the daily lives of persons with a borderline personality disorder (BPD), Houben et al. (2016) recently identified emotional switching, which refers to the tendency to make large changes between positive and negative emotional states over time, as a possible defining characteristic of the emotion dynamics observed in BPD. The goal of this study was to examine the specificity of these previous findings in 2 samples by comparing BPD patients (N = 43 in sample 1; N = 81 in sample 2) to patients with bulimia nervosa (N = 20),

OBJECTIVE: Sleep disturbances are common among veterans with chronic military-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This article reports the results of a multicenter clinical trial that explored the clinical correlates of reported sleep impairment in these veterans and tested the impact of the second-generation antipsychotic risperidone upon these symptoms.
METHOD: This article reports secondary analyses of a 24-week multicenter randomized placebo-controlled trial of adjunctive risperidone in patients with chronic military-related PTSD symptoms (n = 267, 97% male) who were symptomatic

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: The aftermath of treatment for critical illness and/or critical injury in the intensive care unit (ICU) often includes persisting cognitive and emotional morbidities as well as severe physical deconditioning (a constellation termed post-intensive care syndrome, or PICS), but most patients do not receive psychological services before they enter the inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF). Although a burgeoning literature guides the efforts of critical care providers to reduce risk factors for PICS - for example, reducing the use of sedatives and enacting early mobilization, t

Current longitudinal disaster studies usually focus only on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), although some studies have shown that increased risks for other disorders and comorbidity is common. To obtain an insight into the course of postdisaster psychopathology, a community sample of survivors of the Enschede fireworks disaster was followed from 2-3 weeks to 4-years postdisaster. Diagnostic interviews (Composite International Diagnostic Interview [CIDI]; World Health Organization, 1997) and childhood stressor interviews were administered at 2-years postdisaster (n = 260); the CIDI was re

Individuals who experience one type of trauma often experience other types, yet few studies have examined the clustering of trauma. This study examines the clustering of traumatic events and associations of trauma with risk for single and co-occurring major depressive disorder (MDD) and panic attack for 20 years after first trauma. Lifetime histories of MDD, panic attack, and traumatic events were obtained from participants in an Australian twin sample. Latent class analysis was used to derive trauma classes based on each respondent's trauma history. Associations of the resulting classes and o

Little is known about the prevalence of panic attacks in PTSD and their influence on symptom severity and disability. Utilizing the National Comorbidity Survey-Replication data, respondents meeting DSM-IV criteria for past year PTSD (n=203) with and without comorbid panic attacks were compared across various dimensions. Past year panic attacks were found among 35% of the sample and were associated with greater PTSD-related disability and less time spent at work. Panic attacks were also associated with greater prevalence of comorbid depression, substance abuse/dependence, medically unexplained

Incapacitated/drug-alcohol facilitated sexual assault (IS/DAFS) is rapidly gaining recognition as a distinct form of assault with unique public health implications. This study reports the prevalence, case characteristics, and associated health risks of IS/DAFS using a large, nationally representative sample of 1,763 adolescent girls. Results indicate that 11.8% of girls experienced at least one form of sexual assault; 2.1% of the total sample experienced IS/DAFS. Thus IS/DAFS accounted for 18% of all reported sexual assaults, with a prevalence of 4.0% among girls 15 to 17 years of age and 0.7%

Psychiatric complaints are frequent following motor vehicle accidents and may be major predictors of persistent pain and other complaints. Outcomes are not related closely to the nature or severity of any medical injury. Psychiatric problems often are unrecognized and untreated. There is a need for more behaviorally inferred routine care, early recognition of complications, and the use of psychological and pharmacological interventions.
