We assessed the ability of the optical attenuation coefficient (AC) to detect early-stage glaucoma with two AC estimation algorithms: retinal layer intensity ratio (LIR) and depth-resolved confocal (DRC). We also introduced new depth-dependent AC parameters for retinal nerve fiber layer assessment. Optical coherence tomography B-scans were collected from 44 eyes of age-similar participants with eye health ranging from healthy to severe glaucoma, including glaucoma suspect patients. Mean AC values estimated from the DRC method are comparable to ratio-extracted values (p > 0.5 for all study grou

We present a new method for intravascular optical coherence elastography, which is robust against motion artefacts. It employs the correlation between adjacent lines, instead of subsequent frames. Pressure to deform the tissue is applied synchronously with the line scan rate of the optical coherence tomography (OCT) instrument. The viability of the method is demonstrated with a simulation study. We find that the root mean square (rms) error of the displacement estimate is 0.55 microm, and the rms error of the strain is 0.6%. It is shown that high-strain spots in the vessel wall, such as observ

Recurrent optic perineuritis can be related to orbital inflammation. Here we present the case of a 46-year-old male patient in whom recurrent episodes of optic perineuritis were related to chronic osteolytic sinusitis following intranasal cocaine abuse. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated optic perineuritis adjacent to a soft tissue mass that intruded the orbit from the nasal cavity. Computed tomography (CT) confirmed destruction of the medial orbital wall. Staphylococcus aureus was cultured and biopsy showed granulomatous tissue. Visual outcome was poor. We review the literature and

A 32-year-old woman with a history of biopsy-proven giant axonal neuropathy (GAN) and no past ocular history presented after failing a vision-screening test conducted by her primary doctor. Bilateral optic atrophy was observed on fundus examination with cup-to-disc ratio of 0.7. Kinetic visual fields showed moderate constriction in both eyes. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) of the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) exhibited diffuse thinning, a pattern atypical of glaucomatous or nutritional optic atrophy and most likely secondary to the optic atrophy associated with GAN. Serial OCT to monito

CASE REPORT: A 34- year- old man affected by Klinefelter syndrome, with loss of vision in his left eye, ocular hypertension with increased cupping in both eyes, and optic disc pit with serous macular detachment in the left eye. Optical coherence tomography showed a macular detachment with a double-layer detachment, consisting of both an inner layer separation and an outer layer detachment. The outer layer detachment did not seem to communicate with the optic disc.
DISCUSSION: Klinefelter syndrome has been associated with diffuse choroidal atrophy and colobomas of the iris and choroid. Our pat

Open-angle glaucoma (OAG) is characterized by optic nerve fiber atrophy and deterioration of the visual field, corresponding to damage to the optic nerve head. Intraocular pressure (IOP) is currently the only evidence-based, treatable risk factor for OAG. However, normal-tension glaucoma, the most common type of OAG in Asia, is a type of glaucoma with an unclear pathogenesis. Glaucoma is suspected to be a multifactorial disease with IOP-dependent and IOP-independent risk factors, including decreased ocular blood flow (OBF), oxidative stress, decreased axoplasmic flow, and genetic background. Radiation-induced optic neuropathy is an uncommon but devastating complication of radiotherapy for head and neck tumors, characterized by subacute, painless, irreversible visual loss. Nasal mucosal melanoma, although rare, carries a high risk of visual pathway toxicity due to its proximity to anterior optic structures. We report the case of a 73-year-old woman with right nasal mucosal melanoma treated with adjuvant radiotherapy (66 Gy) and anti-PD1 immunotherapy, who developed progressive bilateral vision loss. Neuro-ophthalmological examination revealed severe visual acuity reduction, bilater

BACKGROUND: The optic nerve is frequently injured in multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica, resulting in visual dysfunction, which may be reflected by measures distant from the site of injury.
OBJECTIVE: To determine how retinal nerve fiber layer as a measure of axonal health, and macular volume as a measure of neuronal health are related to changes in myelin water fraction in the optic radiations of multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica participants with and without optic neuritis and compared to healthy controls.
METHODS: 12 healthy controls, 42 multiple sclerosis (16 with opti

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) represents a neurodevelopmental disorder that has been the focus of numerous studies on the central nervous system (CNS). The embryological origin of the brain and retina is shared, with the axons of retinal ganglion cells (RGC) developing into the optic nerves that enter the brain through the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) of the thalamus, LGN, and other visual cortices. Given the evidence that individuals with ASD exhibit impairments in the visual mechanisms, including deficits in emotional face recognition, and difficulty in maintaining gaze control a

Glaucoma is an ocular disorder caused due to increased fluid pressure in the optic nerve. It damages the optic nerve and subsequently causes loss of vision. The available scanning methods are Heidelberg retinal tomography, scanning laser polarimetry, and optical coherence tomography. These methods are expensive and require experienced clinicians to use them. So, there is a need to diagnose glaucoma accurately with low cost. Hence, in this paper, we have presented a new methodology for an automated diagnosis of glaucoma using digital fundus images based on empirical wavelet transform (EWT). The
