The tonsils of ten fattening pigs were compared with those of ten breeding sows to determine the relative incidence of Tonsillophilus suis and Actinomyces sp lesions. Macroscopic observation revealed mildly focal upheavals on the tonsillar mucosal surfaces of two of the breeding sows. In tonsillar slices from both pig groups, tiny nodules containing sulfur granules were found. Histopathologically, the T. suis and Actinomyces sp lesions were noted as tonsillar crypt abscesses in both pig groups, and granulomas due to T. suis were seen in the breeding sows. Azithromycin levels in tonsillar and/or adenoid tissue were determined in children (1.6-7.5 years old) who were scheduled for surgical removal of their tonsils and/or adenoids. The children received azithromycin oral suspension 10 mg/kg once daily for 3 days. Tissue samples were obtained during surgery 1 (n = 4), 2 (n = 5), 4 (n = 6), or 8 (n = 5) days after the last dose of azithromycin. Serum samples were also obtained from four children in each of these groups at the time of surgery. Mean tissue concentrations of azithromycin were 10.33 +/- 3.01, 7.21 +/- 4.04, 9.30 +/- 3.74 and 1.49 +/- 0.

After an outbreak of three cases of serogroup B meningococcal disease at a Norwegian college, 84 of 392 (21%) subjects were tonsillopharyngeal carriers of Neisseria meningitidis. To eradicate meningococcal carriage, 80 volunteers received a single dose of 400 mg of ofloxacin. Three days after treatment, all 75 evaluable volunteers were culture negative for N. meningitidis, and after 7 days none carried the strain that they carried initially, as judged by DNA fingerprinting. A 3-year-old girl with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome associated with tonsillar and adenoid hypertrophy is discussed. Nocturnal sleep registration, 4 months after adeno-tonsillectomy revealed complete arrest of apnea episodes and there was improvement in sleep pattern. In the early detection of obstructive sleep apnea in children a careful history and nocturnal sleep registration are essential. In children, tonsillar and adenoid hypertrophy are the main causes of obstructive sleep apnea.

In vitro cefoperazone proved more active against the tested gram-negative bacteria than either piperacillin or mezlocillin. When administered in 1 g venous bolus the antibiotic achieved high plasmatic concentrations that were still adequate after 8 hours. 33.2% was excreted by the kidneys and a considerable amount by the biliary way. Cefoperazone produced a clinical cure in 35/36 patients (97.22%). A disulfiram-like effect was noted in 18.18%.
