Development and clinical evaluation of a root coverage procedure using a collagen barrier membrane.

The use of guided tissue regeneration (GTR) procedures in the treatment of gingival recession has shown promising results and is gaining clinical acceptance. The purpose of this study was to assess the use of a bioabsorbable collagen membrane as a barrier device in root coverage treatment of gingival recession defects. The study consisted of 10 patients with 10 defects of either Miller Class I or II description and gingival recession > or =2.5 mm. Clinical measurements taken at baseline included plaque index (PI) and gingival index (GI), clinical attachment level (CAL) measured with an automat

Periodontal repair in dogs: evaluation of rhBMP-2 carriers.

This study evaluated candidate carriers for recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2)-driven periodontal regeneration. Previous experiments indicated the ability of rhBMP-2 in a particulate delivery system to result in substantial regeneration of bone and periodontal regeneration. In the present study, canine demineralized bone matrix (DBM), bovine deorganified crystalline bone matrix (Bio-Oss), an absorbable collagen sponge (ACS) of type I bovine collagen, poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) microparticles (PLGA), and polylactic acid granules (Drilac) were tested for their ability t

Performance of self-reported measures for periodontitis in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluates the performance of self-report against the reference standard of clinically defined periodontitis in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA) after accounting for factors associated with periodontitis. METHODS: Six self-report periodontitis questions were evaluated in patients with RA and OA. Questions were validated against a reference standard of severe and moderate-to-severe periodontitis based on full-mouth examination. Multivariable logistic regression was used to evaluate the performance of: 1) self-report alone; 2) age, sex, educa

Cimetidine reduces alveolar bone loss in induced periodontitis in rat molars.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that histamine released during inflammation plays a role in bone metabolism via the H2 receptor, stimulating bone resorption. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether cimetidine, a histamine H2-receptor antagonist, interferes with the initiation and progression of induced periodontal disease in rat molars. METHODS: Forty male rats received 100 mg/kg body weight of cimetidine (cimetidine group [CimG]) or saline solution (sham group [SG]). Periodontal disease was induced in the maxillary left first molars (PDSG and PDCimG); maxillary right molars were used

Comparison of clinical, periapical radiograph, and cone-beam volume tomography measurement techniques for assessing bone level changes following regenerative periodontal therapy.

BACKGROUND: Intraoral radiographs (IRs) provide a two-dimensional view of osseous structures, whereas cone-beam volumetric tomography (CBVT) images are viewable in three dimensions. The aim of this investigation was to compare the measurements from digital IR and CBVT images to direct surgical measurements for the evaluation of regenerative treatment outcomes. METHODS: Digital IR and CBVT images were taken prior to initial bone grafting and at the 6-month reentry surgery for 35 intrabony defects. After defect debridement, direct bony defect measurements were made with a periodontal probe. The

Cervical sympathectomy causes alveolar bone loss in an experimental rat model.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Periodontal disease, a pathological destructive inflammatory condition, is characterized by alveolar bone loss. Recent studies have suggested a correlation between the sympathetic nervous system and bone remodeling. To confirm the importance of the sympathetic nervous system in bone resorption, we investigated the effects of superior cervical ganglionectomy and oral challenge with Porphyromonas gingivalis on alveolar bone loss in rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Rats were divided into three groups: group A underwent a sham operation as the control group; group B underwent

[Long-term functional and aesthetic sequelae after complex facial trauma associated with a mild brain injury].

INTRODUCTION: Most victims of complex facial trauma will have permanent sequelae. The goal of our work was to evaluate, by means of a retrospective study, the long-term sequelae in these patients. MATERIAL AND METHOD: 102 victims of complex facial trauma were treated in our department between 1995 and 2000. Twenty-four could be re-examined in 2006 in order to evaluate their long-term sequelae. All the patients suffered a mild brain injury. RESULTS: The overall satisfaction rate was good (19/24), but all patients presented either functional or aesthetic sequelae. The major functional sequelae

Treatment of gingival recessions by combined periodontal regenerative technique, guided tissue regeneration, and subpedicle connective tissue graft. A comparative clinical study.

BACKGROUND: Many surgical techniques have been shown to be effective in correcting gingival recessions by covering the exposed root with soft tissue; however, the thickness of the gingival tissue over the root surface probably plays an important role in preventing the recurrence of tissue recession. The aim of the present study was to compare the results of a mucogingival bilaminar technique (BT), guided tissue regeneration (GTR), and a combined periodontal regenerative technique (CPRT) in achieving root coverage and increasing the gingival thickness 1 year after surgical treatment. A functional evaluation of patients treated for oral cancer. A prospective study.

The oral function of 81 consecutive patients with intraoral squamous cell carcinoma was assessed at diagnosis and during the follow-up 1-2 years after diagnosis. Patients received either radiotherapy, surgery, or radiotherapy and surgery. Speech function and tongue mobility were better among patients who received radiotherapy alone than among patients treated with surgery or combined therapy. Subjective complaints about mucositis, poor dental status, and loss of teeth were most pronounced among patients who received radiotherapy. Patients with tumor recurrence reported a poorer quality of life
