We report a case of reticulum cell sarcoma with involvement both in the brain and the eyes. The patient was a 49-year-old man. In 1985, he suffered steroid-resistant uveitis of unknown etiology in his right eye. After that, in 1986, he was aware of a weakness in the right arm and leg and of right sensory disturbances. Histopathological study of a biopsy specimen revealed a malignant lymphoma in the left thalamus, and the lesion was effectively treated by radiation to the brain. In 1987, he complained of visual disturbances in the left eye. According to the history and ocular manifestation, the…

A 47-year-old Japanese man had a progressive degeneration of the retina and choroid along the retinal veins associated with uveitis of two years' duration. The lesion was characteristic of paravenous retinochoroidal atrophy: a contiguous atrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium and choroid of one-half to one disc diameter in size was present along most of the veins from the posterior pole to the far periphery. Fluorescein angiography showed a window defect in the retinal pigment epithelium, with hyperfluorescence representative of retinal pigment epithelium and choriocapillaris degeneration. …

BACKGROUND: Blau Syndrome (BS) is a rare autosomal dominant noncaseous granulomatous disease caused by mutations in the NOD2 gene. The disease is characterized by granulomatous dermatitis, symmetrical arthritis, and uveitis, which, if left untreated, can progress to blindness. The diagnosis of BS can be challenging because of its rarity and overlap with other rheumatologic disorders. Early detection of ocular involvement is critical to prevent vision loss and improve the prognosis of patients with BS.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this report, we present a case of a five-year-old Chinese girl diagnos…

PURPOSE: Re-emergent ocular syphilis in patients with Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) co-infection has both diagnostic and management difficulties because of the overlapping risk factors. The clinical manifestations described in non-HIV may not be the same in patients with HIV coinfection. Immune recovery uveitis (IRU) may also alter the course of the disease causing recurrences. We studied the clinical features in correlation with CD4 counts, systemic immune status, sexual preferences and management outcomes in HIV/AIDS patients with ocular syphilis in the highly active antiretroviral trea…

Birdshot chorioretinopathy, also known as "Birdshot uveitis" is a binocular, chronic disease, as a result of inflammation in the posterior segment of the eye. The hallmarks of the disease are multiple white-creamy choroidal ovoid lesions. The symptoms of the disease range from good visual acuity with only mild symptoms, to a significant and permanent decrease in vision. This review aims to provide information about the course, clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment for Birdshot chorioretinopathy. The initial diagnosis is made through fundus examination, in addition to support of positi…

A 61-year-old male patient presented with blurred vision in the right eye for 1 day. The patient had previously undergone phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation (10 years ago) and intravitreal implantation of dexamethasone (due to uveitis) in the eye. There was edema in the inferior cornea, along with Descemet membrane folds. The rod-shaped dexamethasone implant was visible in the inferior anterior chamber. Without pupil dilation, the patient was asked to keep a supine position and avoid head tilting for 1 day. The implant spontaneously relocated into the vitreous cavity, resul…

Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is a complex disease characterized by a diverse range of clinical presentations. The primary manifestation is inflammatory lower back pain, often accompanied by other clinical manifestations such as peripheral arthritis, enthesitis, uveitis, psoriasis, and inflammatory bowel disease. However, the presentation of axSpA can vary widely among patients. Despite extensive research, the precise pathogenesis of axSpA remains largely unknown. The lack of complete understanding poses challenges in subgrouping the disease, developing specific treatment approaches, and pre…

Neovascular glaucoma is defined as iris and/or anterior chamber angle neovascularization associated with increased intraocular pressure. It is a secondary glaucoma that is most frequently caused by severe retinal ischemia. The most common diseases responsible for the development of neovascular glaucoma are diabetic retinopathy, ischemic central retinal vein occlusion, and ocular ischemic syndrome. Uncommon causes include ocular radiation, ocular tumors, uveitis and other miscellaneous conditions. Vascular endothelial growth factor is an important and likely predominant agent involved in the pa…

Mycobacterium tuberculosis apart from being the causative agent of pulmonary tuberculosis is also notorious to cause tuberculosis at various sites in the human body and ocular tuberculosis is one of the extra pulmonary manifestations of this organism. The most common presentation of ocular tuberculosis is anterior uveitis or choroiditis caused by hematogenous infection or hypersensitivity after another organ infection. Eyelid involvement by tuberculosis is most of the times secondary to orbital involvement and often seen in the form of drainage sinus. Isolated eyelid tuberculosis is however un…

We present a case of bilateral choroidal and exudative retinal detachment with hypotony in a patient with septicaemia. Our patient after initial hospitalisation was treated by the local ophthalmologist as a case of sterile pan uveitis with systemic and topical steroids that did not have any effect. Our patient responded well to timely surgical intervention of choroidal drainage and vitrectomy with silicone oil tamponade followed by steroids and antibiotics. Cataract progression in both eyes occurred due to hypotony, inflammation, use of steroids and the vitreous surgery. It was successfully ma…

Behçet's disease represents a multisystemic inflammatory disease characterized by recurrent oral ulcers, genital ulcers, and uveitis. Although vascular attack and thrombosis are not major complications in Behçet's disease, they can still pose risks that must not be overlooked. In this paper, we reported that a 25-year-old female Behçet's disease patient with complete thrombotic obstruction of the inferior vena cava that was successfully treated by aspiration thrombectomy and balloon angioplasty. The procedure produced marked symptomatic improvement. Currently, data about the treatment and the …

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS; aphthae; canker sores) is common worldwide. Characterised by multiple, recurrent, small, round, or ovoid … phthous-like ulcers are associated with genital ulceration, and eye disease (particularly posterior uveitis). Management remains unsatisfactory, as topical corticosteroids and most other treatments only reduce the severity of the ulceration, but do not stop recurrence.

The prevelance of ankylosing spondylitis or sacroiliitis in Behcet's disease has been the subject of debate for some time. Two cases with atypical presentation and course are discussed. The first patient was a young woman with Behcet's disease whose primary complaint was neck pain. X-ray examination showed severe cervical involvement, characteristic of the type seen in women with ankylosing spondylitis. She subsequently developed anterior uveitis. The second patient was a man suffering from back pain and limited movement of his neck and back. When he was referred to our outpatient clinic, his …
