Bilateral optic neuropathy in Krukenberg tumor treated with FOLFOX plus nivolumab: a case report.

BACKGROUND: A combination of FOLFOX and nivolumab is a first-line treatment for HER2-negative advanced gastric cancer, significantly improving survival. However, this regimen is associated with potential neurotoxicity. 5-Fluorouracil and oxaliplatin in FOLFOX have been linked to optic neuropathy, whereas nivolumab, an immune checkpoint inhibitor, may cause immune-related optic neuropathy. Although FOLFOX plus nivolumab provides considerable survival benefits, careful monitoring for ocular complications is essential. We report a case of bilateral optic neuropathy in a patient who received FOLFO

Impact of crossplay between ocular aberrations and depth of focus in topo-guided laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis outcomes.

PURPOSE: To develop a nomogram in cases with mismatch between subjective and Topolyzer cylinder, and based on the magnitude of the mismatch, customize a treatment plan to attain good visual outcomes post-laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) surgery. METHODS: The patients were evaluated preoperatively using corneal tomography with Pentacam. Five optimal corneal topography scans were obtained from the Topolyzer Vario were used for planning the LASIK treatment. For the nomogram purpose, the patients were divided into three categories based on the difference between the subjective cylind

The Occipital Place Area Is Recruited for Echo-Acoustically Guided Navigation in Blind Human Echolocators.

In the investigation of the brain areas involved in human spatial navigation, the traditional focus has been on visually guided navigation in sighted people. Consequently, it is unclear whether the involved areas also support navigational abilities in other modalities. We explored this possibility by testing whether the occipital place area (OPA), a region associated with visual boundary-based navigation in sighted people, has a similar role in echo-acoustically guided navigation in blind human echolocators. We used fMRI to measure brain activity in 6 blind echolocation experts (EEs; five male

Horse vision and obstacle visibility in horseracing.

Visual information is key to how many animals interact with their environment, and much research has investigated how animals respond to colour and brightness information in the natural world. Understanding the visibility of features in anthropogenic environments, and how animals respond to these, is also important, not least for the welfare and safety of animals and the humans they co-exist with, but has received comparatively less attention. One area where this is particularly pertinent is animal sports such as horseracing. Here there is a need to understand how horses see and respond to obs

Robust Visual Responses and Normal Retinotopy in Primate Lateral Geniculate Nucleus following Long-term Lesions of Striate Cortex.

Lesions of striate cortex (V1) trigger massive retrograde degeneration of neurons in the LGN. In primates, these lesions also lead to scotomas, within which conscious vision is abolished. Mediation of residual visual capacity within these regions (blindsight) has been traditionally attributed to an indirect visual pathway to the extrastriate cortex, which involves the superior colliculus and pulvinar complex. However, recent studies have suggested that preservation of the LGN is critical for behavioral evidence of blindsight, raising the question of what type of visual information is channeled

Population need for primary eye care in Rwanda: A national survey.

BACKGROUND: Universal access to Primary Eye Care (PEC) is a key global initiative to reduce and prevent avoidable causes of visual impairment (VI). PEC can address minor eye conditions, simple forms of uncorrected refractive error (URE) and create a referral pathway for specialist eye care, thus offering a potential solution to a lack of eye health specialists in low-income countries. However, there is little information on the population need for PEC, including prevalence of URE in all ages in Sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: A national survey was conducted of people aged 7 and over in Rwanda in

Oculocutaneous albinism.

Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is a group of inherited disorders of melanin biosynthesis characterized by a generalized reduction in pigmentation of hair, skin and eyes. The prevalence of all forms of albinism varies considerably worldwide and has been estimated at approximately 1/17,000, suggesting that about 1 in 70 people carry a gene for OCA. The clinical spectrum of OCA ranges, with OCA1A being the most severe type with a complete lack of melanin production throughout life, while the milder forms OCA1B, OCA2, OCA3 and OCA4 show some pigment accumulation over time. Clinical manifestations i

Gait Features in Different Environments Contributing to Participation in Outdoor Activities in Old Age (GaitAge): Protocol for an Observational Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: The ability to walk is a key issue for independent old age. Optimizing older peoples' opportunities for an autonomous and active life and reducing health disparities requires a better understanding of how to support independent mobility in older people. With increasing age, changes in gait parameters such as step length and cadence are common and have been shown to increase the risk of mobility decline. However, gait assessments are typically based on laboratory measures, even though walking in a laboratory environment may be significantly different from walking in outdoor environm

Developing and validating a multivariable prediction model which predicts progression of intermediate to late age-related macular degeneration-the PINNACLE trial protocol.

AIMS: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is characterised by a progressive loss of central vision. Intermediate AMD is a risk factor for progression to advanced stages categorised as geographic atrophy (GA) and neovascular AMD. However, rates of progression to advanced stages vary between individuals. Recent advances in imaging and computing technologies have enabled deep phenotyping of intermediate AMD. The aim of this project is to utilise machine learning (ML) and advanced statistical modelling as an innovative approach to discover novel features and accurately quantify markers of patho

Cortical Visual Mapping following Ocular Gene Augmentation Therapy for Achromatopsia.

The ability of the adult human brain to develop function following correction of congenital deafferentation is controversial. Specifically, cases of recovery from congenital visual deficits are rare. CNGA3-achromatopsia is a congenital hereditary disease caused by cone-photoreceptor dysfunction, leading to impaired acuity, photoaversion, and complete color blindness. Essentially, these patients have rod-driven vision only, seeing the world in blurry shades of gray. We use the uniqueness of this rare disease, in which the cone-photoreceptors and afferent fibers are preserved but do not function

Training on Movement Figure-Ground Discrimination Remediates Low-Level Visual Timing Deficits in the Dorsal Stream, Improving High-Level Cognitive Functioning, Including Attention, Reading Fluency, and Working Memory.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether neurotraining to discriminate a moving test pattern relative to a stationary background, figure-ground discrimination, improves vision and cognitive functioning in dyslexics, as well as typically-developing normal students. We predict that improving the speed and sensitivity of figure-ground movement discrimination (PATH to Reading neurotraining) acts to remediate visual timing deficits in the dorsal stream, thereby improving processing speed, reading fluency, and the executive control functions of attention and working memory in both dyslexic

Clinical manifestations and treatment outcomes of syphilitic uveitis in HIV-negative patients in China: A retrospective case study.

Syphilitic chorioretinitis should be included in differential diagnosis of any form of ocular inflammation. A significantly higher proportion of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients with ocular syphilis as compared to HIV-negative cases have been reported in published studies. However, the clinical signs and symptoms are more insidious in HIV-negative patients who are easily misdiagnosed. We report a series of cases of ocular syphilis and describe the clinical manifestations and treatment outcomes of syphilitic chorioretinitis in HIV-negative patients in China. This was a retros

An investigation of some sensory and refractive visual factors in dyslexia.

The role of visual factors in dyslexia has been a long-standing source of controversy. Recent research has suggested that there may be a deficit of the transient visual subsystem in dyslexia. The evidence for this hypothesis comes principally from investigations of spatial and temporal contrast sensitivity and visual persistence. This evidence is reviewed and it is noted that previous work has never applied two of these purported "tests of transient function" to the same subject group. The hypothesised transient system deficit in dyslexia was investigated in a study comparing 43 control with 3

[An unusual association of transient resolving thyrotoxicosis due to painless thyroiditis, hypopituitarism and central diabetes insipidus associated with spontaneous pituitary apoplexy].

Pituitary apoplexy is characterized by a wide spectrum of clinical features. A quite rare case of painless thyroiditis, hypopituitarism and central diabetes insipidus (DI) followed by pituitary apoplexy was presented. A 61-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital in May, 1986 because of marked general malaise, polydipsia and weight loss which became progressively worse. Four months earlier she had experienced episodes of abrupt onset of severe headache associated with nausea and blurring vision. Physical examinations revealed a fine tremor, dry skin and nervousness. The thyroid gland was no

Hyperhomocysteinemia as a Common Denominator: Linking Posterior Subcapsular Cataract and Pulmonary Thromboembolism.

Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) is a condition that can lead to serious blood clotting and vascular problems. However, its effects on the eyes are less well characterized. A link between high homocysteine levels and the formation of cataracts, especially posterior subcapsular cataracts, has been established. It's thought to be caused by damage to the lens proteins due to oxidative stress. We encountered a 40-year-old man who had a severe pulmonary embolism and was experiencing vision problems. We found that he had bilateral cataracts and high homocysteine levels (98 µmol/L). Despite testing for ot
