Current Knowledge of the Impact of Vitamin D in Coronary Artery Disease.

Coronary artery disease and vitamin D deficiency are both widespread conditions with a high incidence worldwide. Coronary artery disease is a complex illness with variable manifestation and pathogenesis. It often involves the development of atherosclerosis, and it frequently has serious or even fatal consequences for the patient. Vitamin D receptor expression is found in many tissues throughout the body, which results in a broad effect of the vitamin. Studies have found correlations between vitamin D deficiency and the development of coronary artery disease as well as other cardiovascular dise

Vitamin D Status as a Late Pregnancy Biomarker of Perceived Stress.

Background/Objectives: Stress during pregnancy critically impacts maternal and fetal health. While prior research has linked sociodemographic and biological factors to stress levels, the role of specific biomarkers, such as vitamin D (VD), remains unexplored. This study examined the relationships among sociodemographic factors, VD status (as measured by serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration), and perceived stress in pregnant women. We hypothesized that 25(OH)D concentration would be associated with perceived stress levels during pregnancy. Methods: A post hoc analysis of the Kellog

Immunomodulatory Mechanisms and Therapeutic Potential of Vitamin D in Immune Thrombocytopenia.

In addition to its classical function in regulating phosphorus and calcium equilibrium, the immunoregulatory effects of vitamin D (VD) have increasingly drawn attention in recent investigations. A deficiency of VD has been associated with multiple autoimmune pathologies. Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), a hemorrhagic disorder mediated by autoantibodies, manifests through accelerated platelet destruction accompanied by impaired platelet production. Accumulating evidence suggests that VD is intricately involved in ITP pathophysiology, with serum VD concentrations strongly associated with clinical

Impact of vitamin B12 deficiency on macular and choroidal vascular structures.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Vitamin B12 deficiency can affect macular and choroidal vasculature. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and enhanced depth imaging OCT (EDI-OCT) are essential for early detection and monitoring of these microvascular changes, helping to prevent potential visual impairment. BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess the impact of vitamin B12 deficiency on the vascular structures of the macula and choroid by using OCTA and EDI-OCT. METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional study included 34 individuals with vitamin B12 deficiency and 36 healthy participants as the

Pseudo-dementia caused by metformin-induced vitamin B12 deficiency.

Metformin is the most widely used oral insulin-sensitizing agent. There is a significant association between long-term metformin therapy and an increased prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency is one of the causes of pseudo-dementia. This paper presents a rare case of pseudo-dementia in a 60-year-old Caucasian woman caused by vitamin B12 deficiency induced by the use of metformin, a vegetarian diet, and smoking. In diabetics with cognitive disorders who are on biguanide therapy, it is necessary to determine the level of vitamin B12 in the serum in order to rule out possib

Are the UK's vitamin C recommendations evidence-based? A critical comment.

There is substantial international variation in recommended vitamin C intake levels. In the USA, the recommendation is 90 mg/d for men and 75 mg/d for women, while in the UK, the current recommendation – established in 1991 – is only 40 mg/d for adults. This UK level was based on the 1953 Sheffield study, which found that 10 mg/d prevents scurvy, with 40 mg/d chosen as the recommended level for yielding somewhat higher plasma levels. In this commentary, we argue that the UK recommendation overlooked key evidence available at the time. Specifically, at least six controlled trials published befo

Vitamin C Deficiency Megaloblastic Anemia Mimicking Hemolytic Anemia.

A 31-year-old female presented at our hospital with fatigue and subcutaneous bleeding. Blood tests revealed hemolytic anemia. The patient had Coombs-negative normocytic anemia and thrombocytopenia; therefore, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura was ruled out. On day two, we noticed that the eating habits of the patient, hypersegmented neutrophils, and megaloblastic changes suggested malnutrition; therefore, we initiated vitamin supplementation. On day six, the vitamin C levels were <0.2 μg/mL, and the patient was therefore diagnosed with scurvy. Scurvy can mimic hemolytic anemia by causing nor

Pulmonary hypertension secondary to vitamin C deficiency: A case report.

Scurvy is a rare disease caused by exogenous ascorbic acid deficiency. It should be considered in atrisk groups, such as patients with neurodevelopmental disorders who present restrictive diets due to food selectivity. Although pulmonary hypertension associated with vitamin C deficiency is extremely rare, its occurrence is possible. Signs and symptoms such as edema, tachycardia, palpitations, and dyspnea should raise suspicion about the diagnosis. In most cases, this condition is transient and can be reversed with early diagnosis and adequate supplementation with ascorbic acid. We present a ca

Vitamin A deficiency and male-specific effects on heart function in mice.

Hepatic stores of Vitamin A (retinol) are mobilized and metabolized in the heart following myocardial infarction. The physiological consequences of this mobilization are poorly understood. Here we used dietary depletion in a lecithin retinol acyltransferase mutant mouse line to induce Vitamin A deficiency and investigate the effects on cardiac function and recovery from myocardial infarction. We found that uninjured Vitamin A-depleted hearts had decreased contractile function but, paradoxically, improved recovery after injury. These effects on cardiac function were specific to male mice, which

Symptomatic vitamin A deficiency in a paediatric patient with short bowel syndrome.

Vitamin A deficiency-which leads to xerophthalmia-is rarely observed in developed countries. However, it can be triggered by malabsorption conditions such as short bowel syndrome (SBS). Herein, we present an early-adolescent boy with hypoganglionosis-related SBS receiving long-term supplemental parenteral nutrition who presented with night blindness, bilateral conjunctival xerosis and Bitot's spots. The patient's serum retinol level was 4.2 (normal: > 20) µg/dL. Thus, 100 000 IU of vitamin A was administered intramuscularly on days 1, 2 and again after 2 weeks. The ocular signs and night blind

Hereditary Combined Deficiency of the Vitamin K-Dependent Coagulation Factors.

Hereditary combined vitamin K-dependent coagulation factor deficiency (VKCFD) is an extremely rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder characterized by deficiencies in vitamin K-dependent coagulation factors and natural anticoagulants. The condition presents with a spectrum of bleeding symptoms ranging from mild to severe, often beginning in the neonatal period. These bleeding episodes can be particularly severe and even life-threatening, occurring spontaneously or during surgery. In addition to bleeding problems, individuals with VKCFD may experience a variety of non-hemostatic problems, inc

Vitamin B12 Deficiency in Pernicious Anemia: A Hemolytic Anemia Mimic.

Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to a wide range of clinical symptoms and may resemble hemolytic anemia due to ineffective red blood cell production and hemolysis occurring within the bone marrow. Identifying this deficiency as a possible cause of hemolysis is essential to prevent misdiagnosis, especially when distinguishing it from thrombotic microangiopathy. We present a case involving a 60-year-old woman with a history of hypertension and type 2 diabetes who came in with symptoms of generalized weakness, dizziness, nausea, and abdominal pain. Laboratory tests showed pancytopenia, macrocytosi

Intersections of vitamin D deficiency, HIV and chronic liver diseases.

OBJECTIVES: Despite effective antiretroviral therapy (ART), chronic liver diseases remain a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among people with HIV, with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) now the predominant etiology. Vitamin D deficiency is also highly prevalent in this population. We synthesize current evidence on the interplay between HIV, liver disease, and vitamin D deficiency, and highlight implications for risk stratification and therapeutic research in this population. METHODS: A targeted PubMed search was conducted using terms for HIV, liver dise

Immunomodulatory role of vitamin D and emerging immunotherapies in hepatocellular carcinoma.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common cancers globally, with nearly 1 million new cases diagnosed annually. It is a complex disease, with hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections being the most common etiological factors worldwide. Despite advances in therapy, survival rates for advanced and/or metastatic HCC remain low, with mortality rates 2.3 times higher in men than women. The liver's immune system typically maintains an anti-inflammatory environment, contributing to immune tolerance to exogenous, food-derived antigens. However, disruption of the ba

Relationship in development of malocclusions to polymorphisms of selected vitamin D receptors.

BACKGROUND: The development of malocclusion is related to various factor, many of which are still not fully explained. The steroid hormone, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3, has pleiotropic effects. It plays a key role in skeletal metabolism and the control of cell repair by attaching to the nuclear vitamin D steroid receptor (VDR). This vitamin affects bone turnover through the processes of bone tissue formation and resorption via its action on cells of the osteoblastic and osteoclastic lineage, exerts a modulating effect on the immune system, and is involved in the regulation of cell proliferation a
