Global plastic pollution defines the Plasticene Era, disrupting trophic interactions across ecosystems. Despite progress since the 1990s, much about beaked whale biology and conservation status remains unknown, particularly their vulnerability to plastic pollution. The stranding of a female Cuvier's beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris) on Rhodes Island, Greece, in April 2022 provided a rare chance to assess this threat. Examination revealed 6.73 kg of plastic debris in the stomach, covering 17.44 m2, mostly polyethylene sheets, including three intact plastic bags. The largest item measured ~2000

Recycled water for agricultural irrigation helps to address freshwater scarcity but can contain trace levels of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), which pose potential human exposure risks. Traditional risk assessments, focused primarily on the parent compound, overlook CECs as conjugated phytometabolites. The objective of this study was to determine the bioaccesibility and transformation of conjugated phytometabolites of benzotriazole, a prevalent micropollutant that serves as a model contaminant. Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings, a model Brassica plant that can be representative of other

Olive mill wastewater (OMWW), a by-product of olive oil production, poses severe environmental challenges due to its toxicity, primarily caused by its high organic load and phenolic compounds, along with organic acids, lipids, and heavy metals. These components contribute to its elevated chemical and biological oxygen demand, making OMWW a persistent pollutant that necessitates urgent and effective treatment strategies. The ecological risks, including water contamination, soil degradation, and biodiversity loss, underscore the need for sustainable management approaches. This review explores th

The bioaccumulation of 80 pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) was examined in larvae, pupae, and (sub)adults of three groups of aquatic insects (caddisflies Oligotricha striata and Limnephilus spp. and mayfly Siphlonurus aestivalis) reared in laboratory conditions, with their larvae exposed to a treated urban wastewater for up to 3 months and fed with uncontaminated food. The probability of PhAC detection (above limits of quantification) in larvae was relatively constant throughout the exposure time, while in adults, it was lower at the beginning with a subsequent increase. The total con

The increasing production of waste has become one of the major environmental challenges of our time, particularly in waste management. While the composting process can transform municipal waste into a valuable product, the presence of plastics and microplastics (MPs) (< 5 mm) in the waste and their integration into the final compost and leachate pose significant environmental concerns. This is the first study to analyze the abundance of MP in the compost leachate from one of the Isfahan compost plant (S1), located in one of Iran's major cities with high population density, during the summer se

Phthalate esters (PAEs), which are widely used as plasticizers in various industrial processes, pose significant risks to ecosystems and human health as emerging pollutants. This study aimed to compare different methods for extracting PAEs, quantifying their concentrations, and assessing the health risks associated with exposure to these contaminants. Based on the reviewed studies, solid-phase extraction (SPE) was the preferred sample preparation technique in approximately 60 % of cases due to its efficiency, low solvent consumption, and strong enrichment capabilities. Moreover, gas chromatogr

Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), a ubiquitous chemical contaminant detected in various environmental matrices, poses growing concerns regarding its ecotoxicity and public health risks. In this study, zebrafish (Danio rerio) model was used to investigate the ferroptosis-mediated neurotoxicity elicited by iron dyshomeostasis and lipid peroxidation, upon developmental DBP exposure. DBP-induced ferroptosis compromised zebrafish embryogenesis, leading to reduced tail bent rate and heart rate, as well as elevated mortality and deformity. Larval neurobehavioral deficits, assessed through spontaneous locomoti

Anthropogenic gadolinium (Gdanth), as an emerging contaminant, poses considerable environmental risks in river systems, particularly those in megacities. However, studies on Gdanth source identification and pollution mitigation remain limited. This study systematically investigated the spatial variations, anomalies, possible origins, and associated health risks of rare earth elements (REEs) in the Yongding and Chaobai Rivers (YDCB), which are two representative urban river systems located in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region. A three-dimensional source tracing framework based on Gdanth, N

Lakes serve as critical freshwater resources that sustain biodiversity, support recreational activities, and contribute to regional tourism. Maintaining their water quality is essential to avoid ecological degradation. Considering the ubiquity of various emerging contaminants, lakes in the Indore district of Madhya Pradesh (Central India) were examined for the presence of microplastics. A total of 3 lakes were taken into consideration and water sampling was done followed by analysis and risk assessment. Microplastics were found in all the lakes with concentration varying from 6.7 items/L to12.

Environmental pollution influences human diseases like metabolic dysfunction associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). Bivalves' digestive glands are confronted with persistent organic pollutants (POPs) pollution, resulting in lipid metabolism disorders, and this process is also similar to the formation of MAFLD. In this study, we chose benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P), a typical POPs, to investigate the impaired lipid metabolism and inflammatory risk of digestive glands in clam Ruditapes philippinarum towards B[a]P. The results indicated that accumulation of B[a]P in digestive glands was progressively hi

Reproductive toxicity is a significant factor contributing to the decline in population numbers and is increasingly being reported in association with pesticide exposure in ecological risk assessments. Pesticides can leach or spill into aquatic environments, where they remain suspended or settle, making aquatic organisms vulnerable to potential adverse effects. Although considerable progress has been made in studying the environmental impacts on reproductive health, there remains a need for comprehensive reviews detailing the complex relationships between reproductive toxicity and the structur

Ethylene glycol toxicosis is a common occurrence in dogs and cats but has been reported in other species as well. Up to date, only one case of ethylene glycol toxicosis has been described in horses, and specific guidelines for treating ethylene glycol intoxication in this species are not available. Here we describe the case of 39 sport horses that ingested water contaminated with ethylene glycol. The main clinical sign was apathy, but more severely affected individuals also developed abdominal pain and laminitis. Treatment was initiated around 24 h after the exposure, using ethanol as an antid

Flonicamid (FLO) is a pyridine carboxamide insecticide with a unique mode of action. After parental exposure to FLO for 21 days in zebrafish, this study evaluated the effects of FLO on both the exposed parental generation (F0) and their non-exposed F1 offspring at various developmental stages. FLO accumulates in parental zebrafish in a concentration-dependent and tissue-specific pattern, and it can be detected in the brain tissues of two-month-old F1 offspring (F1-2). In the F0 generation, exposure to FLO induced significant behavioral abnormalities, accompanied by marked oxidative stress and

Okadaic acid (OA) has the potential to induce sublethal effects during the early life stages of fish, which may negatively affect natural populations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the hepatotoxic and neurotoxic effects of OA in 5-day post-fertilization zebrafish (Danio rerio) larvae exposed to concentrations spanning environmentally relevant levels and mechanistically informative doses. Hepatotoxicity was assessed by quantifying lipid droplet size in the liver, while neurotoxicity was evaluated through locomotor activity assays under light-dark cycle conditions and through molecular a

The vast majority of coastal organisms have been facing multigenerational scenarios of fluctuatingly high pCO2 and Cd pollution in their natural habitats. However, the adaptive capacity of these organisms to such combined stressors and the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we conducted a multigenerational experiment (F1-F4) to investigate the adaptive responses of the marine copepod Tigriopus japonicus to combined fluctuatingly high pCO2 and Cd exposure, along with the associated mechanisms. Our findings revealed that steady high pCO2 aggravated Cd multigenerationa

BACKGROUND: In most water and biological samples, the sum of target or even non-target PFAS makes up only a small fraction of the extractable organofluorine (EOF). The methods used for EOF analysis in the methanol are combustion ion chromatography (CIC) and recently high-resolution graphite furnace molecular absorption spectrometry (HR GFMAS). Water samples show a bias towards higher concentrations measured with HR GFMAS than that of CIC. Whether the bias depends on the type of PFAS or on the sample matrix has not been known. Here we study the PFAS compound and the matrix effect using HR GFMAS
