MicroRNA-mediated gene therapy is emerging as a promising method for the treatment of ovarian cancer, but the development of miRNA mimic delivery vectors is still in its infancy, where the safety and efficacy of miR-34a-mimic remain unknown. Ultrasound-targeted microbubble destruction (UTMD) can be an effective and minimally invasive tool for the delivery of miR-34a-mimic in vitro and in vivo. Here, we describe a high-efficiency gene delivery strategy by using miR-34a-mimic loaded folate modified microbubbles (miR-34a-FM) with a portable ultrasonic irradiation system. Ultrasonic parameters, in

Injuries and disorders affecting the knee joint are very common in athletes and older individuals. Passive and active vibration methods, such as acoustic emissions and modal analysis, are extensively used in both industry and the medical field to diagnose structural faults and disorders. To maximize the diagnostic potential of such vibration methods for knee injuries and disorders, a better understanding of the vibroacoustic characteristics of the knee must be developed. In this study, the linearity and vibration transmissibility of the human knee were investigated based on measurements collec

Background: Hearing loss is often treated with an acoustic hearing aid. However, distortion and insufficient gain may cause problems. Active non-acoustic vibratory middle-ear implants (AMEI) may contribute to solve this problem. We recently developed an AMEI which is to be implanted completely through the patient's external auditory canal. The device uses a light-emitting diode (LED) in the external auditory canal that stimulates a photovoltaic sensor, placed in the middle ear, through the intact tympanic membrane. This results in activation of a vibratory miniaturized piezoelectric displaceme

This article briefly reviews and discusses the current status of major non-communicable diseases (mNCDs), definition of e-noise, its possible link as a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and other mNCDs, and proposes possible mechanisms and hypotheses on that link, and how to control e-noise in the future. E-noise is defined as signal from electronic products and instruments that emit radiation and electromagnetic fields. It includes not only the acoustic but also non-acoustic noise. Just like road traffic and aircraft noises, e-noise may not only lead to hearing loss and health problems

In recent years, applications like Apple's Siri or Microsoft's Cortana have created the illusion that one can actually "chat" with a machine. However, a perfectly natural human-machine interaction is far from real as none of these tools can empathize. This issue has raised an increasing interest in speech emotion recognition systems, as the possibility to detect the emotional state of the speaker. This possibility seems relevant to a broad number of domains, ranging from man-machine interfaces to those of diagnostics. With this in mind, in the present work, we explored the possibility of apply

Drug intake is known to be under the influence of social context. We have recently shown that presence of a peer influences drug intake in both rats and humans. Whether or not social acoustic communications between the peers play a role during cocaine or sucrose self-administration (SA) was investigated here using playback of ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) at 50 and 22 kHz, conveying, respectively, positive and negative internal affective states in adult rats. To assess the neurobiological substrate of a potential USV influence on drug and food intake, we tested the effects of subthalamic nuc

We introduce an ultrasonic quantitative imaging method for long bones based on full-waveform inversion. The cost function is defined as the difference in the L 2-norm sense between observed data and synthetic results at a given iteration of the iterative inversion process. For simplicity, and in order to reduce the computational cost, we use a two-dimensional acoustic approximation. The inverse problem is solved iteratively based on a quasi-Newton technique called the Limited-memory Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno method. We show how the technique can be made to work fine for benchmark models

Analysis of data, recorded on March 8th 2014 at the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation's hydroacoustic stations off Cape Leeuwin Western Australia, and at Diego Garcia, reveal unique pressure signatures that could be associated with objects impacting at the sea surface, such as falling meteorites, or the missing Malaysian Aeroplane MH370. To examine the recorded signatures, we carried out experiments with spheres impacting at the surface of a water tank, where we observed almost identical pressure signature structures. While the pressure structure is unique to impacting objects

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to determine the effect of background noise on the intelligibility of dysphonic speech and to examine the relationship between intelligibility in noise and an acoustic measure of dysphonia: cepstral peak prominence (CPP).
METHOD: A study of speech perception was conducted using speech samples from 6 adult speakers with typical voice and 6 adult speakers with dysphonia. Speech samples were presented to 30 listeners with typical hearing in 3 noise conditions: quiet, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)+5, and SNR+0. Intelligibility scores were obtained via orthographic

Tinnitus often results in severe psychological distress. The present study hypothesized that tinnitus acts as a chronic stressor and induces dysregulation of the production of cytokines. The gap pre‑pulse inhibition of acoustic startle paradigm was applied to test tinnitus‑like behavior in rats. Following this, the mRNA and protein expression levels of interferon (IFN)‑γ, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)‑α, interleukin (IL)‑6 and N‑methyl D‑aspartate receptor subunit 2A (NR2A) were measured in rats subjected to acute and chronic salicylate treatment, using reverse transcription‑quantitative polymer

Preservation of residual hearing after cochlear implantation is now considered an important goal of surgery. However, studies indicate an average post-operative hearing loss of around 20 dB at low frequencies. One factor which may contribute to post-operative hearing loss, but which has received little attention in the literature to date, is the increased stiffness of the round window, due to the physical presence of the cochlear implant, and to its subsequent thickening or to bone growth around it. A finite element model was used to estimate that there is approximately a 100-fold increase in

Ultrasonic emissions of bats are directional and delimit the echo-acoustic space. Directionality is quantified by the aperture of the sonar beam. Recent work has shown that bats often widen their sonar beam when approaching movable prey or sharpen their sonar beam when navigating through cluttered habitats. Here we report how nose-emitting bats, Phyllostomus discolor, adjust their sonar beam to object distance. First, we show that the height and width of the bats sonar beam, as imprinted on a parabolic 45 channel microphone array, varies even within each animal and this variation is unrelated

A method to transform the impedance measured in the ear canal, ZEC, to the plane of the eardrum, ZED, is described. The portion of the canal between the probe and eardrum was modeled as a concatenated series of conical segments, allowing for spatial variations in its cross-sectional area. A model of the middle ear (ME) and cochlea terminated the ear-canal model, which permitted estimation of ME efficiency. Acoustic measurements of ZEC were made at two probe locations in 15 normal-hearing subjects. ZEC was sensitive to measurement location, especially near frequencies of canal resonances and an

BACKGROUND: Although electrical stimulation of the larynx has been widely studied for treating voice disorders, its effectiveness has not been assessed under safety and comfortable conditions. This article describes design, theoretical issues, and preliminary evaluation of an innovative system for transdermal electrical stimulation of the larynx. The proposed design includes synchronization of electrical stimuli with laryngeal neuromuscular activity.
OBJECTIVE: To study whether synchronous electrical stimulation of the larynx could be helpful for improving voice quality in patients with dysph

CONCLUSION: Subjective and objective voice evaluation of patients injected with hyaluronic acid-dextranomere (HA-D) in the long term was not different from their preoperative values. HA-D injection does not provide an increase in the voice quality in the long term.
OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to evaluate the long-term voice outcomes of injection with HA-D in patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP).
METHODS: Seventeen patients with UVFP underwent injection of HA-D. The patient group was composed of 13 women and 4 men with an age range of 34-56 years. The voice samples of

UNLABELLED: Acute dysphonia is a frequent condition in clinical practice. Its treatment, especially in adults, is not well established in the literature. Steroids are the most recommended drug treatment. However, the existing studies are not enough to establish superiority among the different steroids and the best route of administration.
OBJECTIVE: This prospective clinical study aimed at comparing the effect of inhaling steroids as a dry powder with the effect of oral steroids to treat acute dysphonia.
METHOD: We assessed 32 adult patients, broken down into two groups of 16 patients in eac

The gold standard for diagnosing sleep apnoea-hypopnoea syndrome (SAHS) is polysomnography (PSG), an expensive, labour-intensive and time-consuming procedure. Accordingly, it would be very useful to have a screening method to allow early assessment of the severity of a subject, prior to his/her referral for PSG. Several differences have been reported between simple snorers and SAHS patients in the acoustic characteristics of snoring and its variability. In this paper, snores are fully characterised in the time domain, by their sound intensity and pitch, and in the frequency domain, by their fo
