The family environment in late childhood and early adolescence as a predictor of narcissism in emerging adulthood: Findings from a 17-year longitudinal study of Mexican-origin youth.

The development of narcissism has been theoretically tied to childhood experiences, yet little empirical research has examined the influence of the family environment on adult narcissism using long-term longitudinal data. The present study identified family factors in late childhood and early adolescence that are prospectively associated with narcissism (grandiosity, superiority, exploitativeness, vulnerability) in emerging adulthood using data from a longitudinal study of Mexican-origin youth (N = 674) spanning from age 10 to 26. Using structural equation modeling of multimethod data (child r

Acute Sector Cancer Physiotherapy Service Provision and Workforce.

AIM: This audit aimed to quantify cancer physiotherapy workforce and services across the acute cancer services and to examine current priorities, barriers and facilitators to service delivery. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey tool was used to capture data from physiotherapist managers at 9 designated cancer centres (DCC) and 17 acute systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) hospitals, where regional cancer care is delivered. Quantitative data was analysed descriptively and qualitative data from open-text comments were analysed narratively. RESULTS: All 26 physiotherapist managers responded. With

Integrating multilevel, multidomain and multimodal neuroimaging factors to predict early alcohol exposure trajectories using explainable AI.

Various multilevel, multidomain factors at the individual-, family-, and environmental-level, and changes in neurobiology have been associated with the likelihood of developing alcohol use disorder (AUD) or binge drinking later in life. Prior studies have examined only limited subsets of these factors, typically focusing on cross-sectional associations with alcohol initiation, binge drinking, or AUD rather than exploring longitudinal alcohol use trajectories. Our study addresses these gaps by applying machine learning methods to a comprehensive set of multilevel, multidomain factors and multim

Amygdala Subregion Volumes and Apportionment in Preadolescents - Associations with Age, Sex, and Body Mass Index.

The amygdala, a key limbic structure, is critical to emotional, social, and appetitive behaviors that develop throughout adolescence. Composed of a heterogeneous group of nuclei, questions remain about potential differences in the maturation of its subregions during development. In 3,953 9- and 10-year-olds from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study, the CIT168 Amygdala Atlas was used to segment nine amygdala subregions. Linear mixed-effects models were used to examine the effects of age, sex, pubertal stage, and body mass index z-score (BMIz) on subregion volumes and their relative

Prenatal Exposure to Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Is Associated With Greater Pre-Pubertal BMI Growth and Faster Post-Pubertal Cortical Thinning During Peri-Adolescence.

BACKGROUND: The longitudinal trajectory of body mass index (BMI) and brain structure development during peri-adolescence is not clearly defined in offspring prenatally exposed to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) versus unexposed offspring. METHODS: Participants between age 9 and 10 years (N = 9583) were included from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study and followed yearly through 4-year follow-up. GDM and puberty status were self-reported. BMI was calculated yearly, and MRI assessed brain structure biennially. Mixed-effects models analysed trajectories of BMI and br

Correcting misperceived norms: An integrated intervention to prevent adolescent sexual violence and HIV in South Africa.

South Africa is a critical hotspot in the global fight against sexual violence and HIV. We report on the development of Schools Championing Safe South Africa, a behavioural intervention that engages adolescent boys and their peers to identify and address misperceived norms related to these epidemics within the school setting. A social norms survey conducted among 1,431 students aged 13-19 at 3 high schools guided the development of intervention content. The survey captured self-reported and perceived peer sexual violence and HIV norms and behaviours. Analyses identified major misalignment (>20

Real-World Social Reward Processes are Linked to Momentary Positive Affect in Adolescent Girls.

Positive peer interactions are critical for adolescent development and well-being. Showing little interest in interacting socially with peers and/or extracting little reward from positive peer interactions can be markers of social anhedonia, which impacts many youths, especially girls, with social anxiety and depressive disorders. Reduced interest or reward in peer interactions may contribute to social anxiety and depression in girls through effects on positive affect (PA), though associations between social anhedonia and momentary PA have yet to be tested. The present study used ecological mo…

Early childhood household instability, adolescent structural neural network architecture, and young adulthood depression: A 21-year longitudinal study.

Unstable and unpredictable environments are linked to risk for psychopathology, but the underlying neural mechanisms that explain how instability relate to subsequent mental health concerns remain unclear. In particular, few studies have focused on the association between instability and white matter structures despite white matter playing a crucial role for neural development. In a longitudinal sample recruited from a population-based study (N = 237), household instability (residential moves, changes in household composition, caregiver transitions in the first 5 years) was examined in associa

Maternal Fructose Intake, Programmed Mitochondrial Function and Predisposition to Adult Disease.

Fructose consumption is now recognised as a major risk factor in the development of metabolic diseases, such as hyperlipidaemia, diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and obesity. In addition to environmental, social, and genetic factors, an unfavourable intrauterine environment is now also recognised as an important factor in the progression of, or susceptibility to, metabolic disease during adulthood. Developmental trajectory in the short term, in response to nutrient restriction or excessive nutrient availability, may promote adaptation that serves to maintain organ functionality nece

Maternal immune activation accelerates puberty initiation and alters mechanical allodynia in male and female C57BL6/J mice.

The mechanisms that link maternal immune activation (MIA) with the onset of neurodevelopmental disorders remain largely unclear. Accelerated puberty is also associated with a heightened risk for psychopathology in later life, but there is a dearth of evidence on the impacts of maternal infection on pubertal timing. We examined the effects of MIA on reproductive development, mechanical allodynia, and sensorimotor gating in juvenile, adolescent, and adult male and female mice. Moreover, we investigated hypothalamic neural markers associated with the reproductive and stress axes. Finally, we test

Perinatal SSRI exposure affects brain functional activity associated with whisker stimulation in adolescent and adult rats.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), such as fluoxetine, are used as first-line antidepressant medication during pregnancy. Since SSRIs cross the placenta the unborn child is exposed to the maternal SSRI medication, resulting in, amongst others, increased risk for autism in offspring. This likely results from developmental changes in brain function. Studies employing rats lacking the serotonin transporter have shown that elevations in serotonin levels particularly affect the development of the whisker related part of the primary somatosensory (barrel) cortex. Therefore, we hypothesi

Measurement matters: An individual differences examination of family socioeconomic factors, latent dimensions of children's experiences, and resting state functional brain connectivity in the ABCD sample.

The variation in experiences between high and low-socioeconomic status contexts are posited to play a crucial role in shaping the developing brain and may explain differences in child outcomes. Yet, examinations of SES and brain development have largely been limited to distal proxies of these experiences (e.g., income comparisons). The current study sought to disentangle the effects of multiple socioeconomic indices and dimensions of more proximal experiences on resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in a sample of 7834 youth (aged 9-10 years) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Developm

Childhood Obesity, Cortical Structure, and Executive Function in Healthy Children.

The development of executive function is linked to maturation of prefrontal cortex (PFC) in childhood. Childhood obesity has been associated with changes in brain structure, particularly in PFC, as well as deficits in executive functions. We aimed to determine whether differences in cortical structure mediate the relationship between executive function and childhood obesity. We analyzed MR-derived measures of cortical thickness for 2700 children between the ages of 9 and 11 years, recruited as part of the NIH Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. We related our findings to m

Prenatal exposure to alcohol impairs social play behavior in adolescent male mice.

Prenatal ethanol exposure affects brain development and causes neural impairment, leading to both cognitive and behavioral consequences in the offspring. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the impact of prenatal exposure to small amounts of alcohol on social play behavior in adolescent male offspring. Swiss mice were prenatally exposed to ethanol by feeding pregnant dams with a liquid diet containing 25% alcohol-derived calories during gestation (alcohol group). They were then compared to both pair-fed dams that received an isocaloric liquid diet containing 0% alcohol-derived

Programming the brain: Common outcomes and gaps in knowledge from animal studies of IUGR.

IUGR in humans is associated with impaired pre- and postnatal neurodevelopment, and subsequent postnatal cognition, resulting in lower IQ, poorer memory, visuomotor and executive function skills, as well as behavioural and attentional problems. Experimental models of IUGR are needed to allow direct testing of causality and interventions, and have benefits in reducing both confounding by comorbidities such as prematurity, and variation due to environment and genetics. This review describes and discusses experimental models of IUGR in which neurodevelopmental and cognitive outcomes of IUGR have

Ube3a reinstatement identifies distinct developmental windows in a murine Angelman syndrome model.

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a severe neurodevelopmental disorder that results from loss of function of the maternal ubiquitin protein ligase E3A (UBE3A) allele. Due to neuron-specific imprinting, the paternal UBE3A copy is silenced. Previous studies in murine models have demonstrated that strategies to activate the paternal Ube3a allele are feasible; however, a recent study showed that pharmacological Ube3a gene reactivation in adulthood failed to rescue the majority of neurocognitive phenotypes in a murine AS model. Here, we performed a systematic study to investigate the possibility that neuro

Novel Insights into 46,XY Disorders of Sex Development due to NR5A1 Gene Mutation.

The differential diagnosis of 46,XY disorders of sex development (DSD) is based on the distinction between forms of gonadal dysgenesis and disorders of androgen biosynthesis and action. However, clinical and endocrine evaluations are often not conclusive. Here, we describe an adolescent female with hirsutism and hyperandrogenization at puberty. Her karyotype was 46,XY, and clinical investigation demonstrated clitoromegaly, but no uterine remnants were detected. Histology of the gonads revealed a testicular structure with a Sertoli-cell-only pattern. Endocrine evaluation showed hypergonadotropi

[Life-cycles, psychopathology and suicidal behaviour].

According to modern psychological theories the human life implies continuous development, the efficient solution of age-specific problems is necessary to the successful transition of age-periods. The phases of transition are very vulnerable against the accidental stressors and negative life-events. Thus the problem-solving capacity may run out, which impairs chance of the successful coping with stressful events. It may result in some negative consequences, such as different psychopathological symptoms (depression, anxiety, psychosis) or even suicidal behaviour. For that reason we have to pay s

Developmental perspectives on optimizing educational and vocational outcomes in child and adult survivors of cancer.

Over the last few decades, long-term survival rates of children diagnosed with the two most common forms of childhood cancer, acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and brain tumors have improved substantially. Neurodevelopmental and psychosocial sequelae resulting from these diseases and their treatment have a direct impact on the developing brain and on the quality of life of these children and their families. The focus of this article is on optimizing neuropsychological and adaptive outcomes for children who have been successfully treated for these cancers and whose prospects for long-term surv
