Dermatomyositis is well known to be associated with several types of malignancy and patients with dermatomyositis have higher rates of mortality from cancer. Although rare in Japan, head and neck cancer, especially nasopharyngeal cancer, is the predominant type of cancer associated with dermatomyositis in several areas in Asia, including Hong Kong and Singapore. Here we report two cases of head and neck cancer with dermatomyositis as well as a literature review. Both cases were treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Although the patients were immunosuppressed due to dermatomyositis treatm…

Ticks can transmit a variety of viruses, bacteria or parasites that can cause serious infections or conditions in humans and animals. While tick-borne diseases are becoming an increasing and serious problem in Europe, tick-borne diseases are also responsible for major depressions in livestock production and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and Asia. This review will focus on the most important circulating tick-transmitted pathogens in Europe (Borrelia spp., Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Babesia spp., tick-borne encephalitis virus, Rickettsia spp. and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever …

Glucose-6-phosphate (G6PD) deficiency is a common disease characterized by acute hemolysis induced by oxidative stress. More than 400 million subjects throughout the world carry the hereditary enzyme defect with the highest prevalences in Africa, Asia, and the Mediterranean region. In individuals affected by the erythrocytic enzymatic disorder, besides infectious diseases and diet, acute hemolytic crisis can be triggered by numerous drugs frequently used for the treatment of dermatoses. Taking into account the increasing number of immigrants from geographic regions with high prevalences of G6P…

Haemoglobinopathies refer to a range of genetically inherited disorders of red blood cell haemoglobin and include sickle cell disorders and thalassaemias. They occur most commonly in populations whose ancestors come from Africa, Asia, Mediterranean Islands, and the Middle and Far East. Haemoglobin (Hb) abnormalities (or haemoglobinopathies) are caused by (i) abnormalities of the protein structure; (ii) imbalanced globin chain production owing to reduced rate of synthesis of normal a or b globin chains; or (iii) a combination of the two. This article will focus on the biological basis of sickle…

We described a Saudi patient infected with Diphyllobothrium latum D. latum. A 38-year-old male presented, complaining of passing worms. He had a history of recent travel to Europe and South East Asia. Stools examination revealed typical D. latum eggs. He was treated with praziquantel followed by saline purge, after which he discharged an intact tapeworm. Macroscopic and microscopic examinations of the worm confirmed the diagnosis of D. latum. This is the first case of diphyllobothriasis to be reported in Saudi Arabia. The epidemiology and methods of prevention of diphyllobothriasis are discuss…

Japanese encephalitis is a disease of the CNS, endemic in Asia and Oceania. The disease is refractory to drug treatments and whilst the rural economies remain heavily dependent on agriculture, conditions for propagation of the disease will persist. Thus, there is a need for effective vaccines. Although some currently exist, they have their shortcomings. ChimeriVax-JE (Acambis Inc.) is a chimeric, live attenuated vaccine which expresses protective Japanese encephalitis antigens and to date has proven to be safe, effective and well-tolerated in clinical trials. It therefore appears to be a cost-…

Malta fever (brucellosis) is an infectious disease of cattle (chiefly goats) which can infect man. Although the disease is not limited to Malta, occurring also in other mediterranean countries as well as in Asia and America, it was originally described in 1863 in Malta where the responsible bacteria (Brucella melitensis) was discovered in 1887 by D. Bruce. Ten years later Wright & Smith (1897) showed that the agglutination test originally established for typhoidic patients could be used for the diagnosis of Malta fever. Finally the conclusions of the Commission for the investigation of Mediter…

A 42-year-old Chinese woman developed 3 weeks of swinging fever, rash, malaise, and discomfort at the right upper quadrant of the abdomen. Acute Clonorchis sinensis infection eventually became evident and the patient responded to praziquantel. Although acute infestation is usually asymptomatic, occasional cases suffer severe symptoms and present difficulties in clinical diagnosis. Clonorchiasis is endemic in South East Asia. With the increasing popularity of travel to these countries and the global migration of Asians, physicians need to be aware of the condition. Treatment with praziquantel i…

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF), a precancerous condition of the oral cavity, has been studied by a number of workers in the field. The available epidemiological data showed a clear-cut geographical and ethnic predisposition, which suggested that certain customs/habits prevalent among the population groups in south-east Asia might be possible etiological factors. However, none of these customs was shown to be causally linked and the association in many cases was 'casual'. This led some workers to consider the importance of systemic predisposition, in addition to the effects of local factors on …

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma occurs with great frequency in Asia. It is an infiltrative tumor that often produces no symptoms early in its course. However, the proximity of the nasopharynx to the nasal cavity, eustachian tubes, masticatory muscles, and cranial nerves can allow extension of the lesion into these structures, resulting in numerous maxillofacial abnormalities. Computed tomography is effective in imaging the development of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in the nasopharynx as well as the subsequent spread of the neoplasm to adjacent areas. Four cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma are presented …

Two cases of facial gnathostomiasis in female Thai patients are described. Gnathostomiasis is caused by a roundworm, Gnathostoma spinigerum. In both patients the disease was characterised by intermittent and migratory swelling of the face. At present no effective therapy is available. Surgical removal of the parasite would be a curative treatment; it is however, rarely successful due to the parasite moving relatively rapidly within the soft tissues. The disease can be prevented by avoiding undercooked meat including fish. In endemic areas such as Southeast Asia, gnathostomiasis must be conside…
