Infants who are human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-exposed uninfected (iHEU) experience higher risk of infectious morbidity than infants HIV-unexposed uninfected (iHUU). We compared tuberculosis (TB) infection prevalence in 418 Bacillus Calmette-Guérin vaccinated sub-Saharan African iHEU and iHUU aged 9-18 months using T-SPOT.TB. Prevalence of TB infection was low and did not differ by HIV exposure status.

A 10-year-old boy presented with facial swelling, thick exudates in the nasal cavities with membranes covering the nasopharynx, shock and respiratory distress. X-ray of the paranasal sinuses showed opacification of both maxillary sinuses. Nasal diphtheria was suspected but culture of the membranes grew Bacillus anthracis. Chest X-ray showed mediastinal widening and extensive pulmonary infiltrates compatible with respiratory anthrax.

Bioactivity-guided fractionation has led to the isolation of two larvicidal diterpenes, active against the yellow fever-transmitting mosquito Aedes aegypti, from a dichloromethane root extract of Melantheria albinervia (Asteraceae), a plant from Zimbabwe. These diterpenes were identified as ent-kaur-16-en-19-oic acid and 9(11),16-kauradien-19-oic acid. The diterpenes were also weakly active against Bacillus subtilis.

PURPOSE: A phase II study was performed to assess the efficacy and tolerability of intravesical oportuzumab monatox in patients with urothelial carcinoma in situ of the bladder. Bacillus Calmette-Guérin treatment had previously failed in all patients.
