[The link between aggressive behavior and depression in adolescence. A cross-sectional study conducted in the psychiatric emergency unit at the Sainte-Anne hospital].

INTRODUCTION: The link between depression and aggressive behavior in adults has been found in many studies. In adolescents, this relationship is still controversial. Several studies point out that irritability is a key symptom in adolescent depressed. Few studies have analyzed precisely the kind of aggressive behavior. This study sets out to assess the relationship between aggressive behavior and depressive affects in adolescents. We also pay attention in this population to hopelessness feelings, anxiety, global functioning and the type of aggressive behavior. METHOD: This is a descriptive an

[Pharmacotherapy of benign prostatic syndrome : Medications, innovations and future prospects].

Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) affect the majority of men over 60 years old in Germany to varying degrees. These symptoms include issues with bladder storage and bladder emptying. The most common cause of such disorders by far is prostate enlargement (benign prostatic hyperplasia, BPH), which leads to urethral narrowing (benign prostatic obstruction, BPO). Due to the aging population, the prevalence of BPH is steadily increasing and a good understanding of individualized patient treatment is of major importance. Treatment options range from watchful waiting and behavioral therapy to phyto

Integrating Yoga and Mindfulness in the Management of Internet Gaming Disorder: A Narrative Review of Current Evidence and Future Directions.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Despite Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) remaining the frontline treatment for Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD), the therapeutic potential of yoga and mindfulness-based interventions (YBIs/MBIs) remains incompletely synthesized. This narrative review evaluates their efficacy in reducing IGD symptoms and associated psychosocial outcomes, while identifying underlying therapeutic mechanisms and research gaps. RECENT FINDINGS: Across the literature, mindfulness meditation consistently outperformed Progressive Muscle Relaxation in reducing IGD severity, supported by neuroimaging

Frontal Lobe Neurocysticercosis Presenting With Schizoaffective Symptoms in an Adolescent Immigrant.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC), caused by the larval stage of Taenia solium, is a parasitic infection of the central nervous system (CNS) that is increasingly identified in non-endemic regions due to global migration, while intraventricular and subarachnoid manifestations, especially those associated with frontal lobe involvement, remain underrecognized. This case report describes a 16-year-old immigrant who presented with psychotic and mood symptoms consistent with schizoaffective disorder, including hallucinations, suicidal ideation, and behavioral dysregulation managed by agitation. Neuroimaging

The therapeutic landscape of tauopathies: challenges and prospects.

Tauopathies are a group of neurodegenerative disorders characterized by the aggregation of the microtubule-associated protein tau. Aggregates of misfolded tau protein are believed to be implicated in neuronal death, which leads to a range of symptoms including cognitive decline, behavioral change, dementia, and motor deficits. Currently, there are no effective treatments for tauopathies. There are four clinical candidates in phase III trials and 16 in phase II trials. While no effective treatments are currently approved, there is increasing evidence to suggest that various therapeutic approach

Personality Organization and Depressive Symptoms Among Psychiatric Outpatients: The Mediating Role of Shame.

Previous research has demonstrated relations between lower level of personality organization (PO) and multiple indices of mental health disturbances. The goal of this research was to examine whether experience of shame would mediate the relationship between PO and depressive symptoms in a sample of 321 Croatian psychiatric outpatients (64% female; mean age, 38.67 years). The total PO level exhibited positive associations with depressive symptoms and with all three subscales of shame ( p < 0.01). Characterological, behavioral, and bodily shame showed significant mediating effects in the PO-depr

Factors associated with delayed diagnosis among Filipino pediatric brain tumor patients: a retrospective review.

Aim: Determine delayed diagnosis measured by prediagnostic symptomatic interval (PSI) among Filipino pediatric brain tumor patients and identify associated factors. Methods: Data was collected retrospectively on Philippine General Hospital pediatric brain tumor patients from 2015 to 2019. PSI was calculated. Associated factors were determined. Results: 196 patients were included. Median PSI was 80.5 days. Longer PSI was significantly associated with older age, supratentorial and low-grade tumors, more physician consults prior to subspecialist referral, longer interval from neuroimaging request

Bilateral Squamosal Suture Craniosynostosis Presenting with Abducens Nerve Palsy and Severe Papilledema.

BACKGROUND: Patients with single-suture or minor suture craniosynostosis are typically asymptomatic at early presentation; intervention is aimed at reducing the risk of elevated intracranial pressure and associated developmental sequelae. Patients may be symptomatic in cases of major multisuture syndromic synostoses or delayed diagnosis. Clinical presentation in this context may include headaches, papilledema, cognitive delay, or behavioral issues. Cranial nerve palsies are atypical symptoms of intracranial hypertension in this patient population. CASE DESCRIPTION: An 11-month-old, otherwise

Facts and myths pertaining to fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is characterized by chronic widespread pain, unrefreshing sleep, physical exhaustion, and cognitive difficulties. It occurs in all populations throughout the world, with prevalence between 2% and 4% in general populations. Definition, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of FM remain points of contention, with some even contesting its existence. The various classification systems according to pain medicine, psychiatry, and neurology (pain disease; persistent somatoform pain disorder; masked depression; somatic symptom disorder; small fiber neuropathy; brain disease) mostly

Exploring the physiological correlates of chronic mild traumatic brain injury symptoms.

We report on the results of a multimodal imaging study involving behavioral assessments, evoked and resting-state BOLD fMRI, and DTI in chronic mTBI subjects. We found that larger task-evoked BOLD activity in the MT+/LO region in extra-striate visual cortex correlated with mTBI and PTSD symptoms, especially light sensitivity. Moreover, higher FA values near the left optic radiation (OR) were associated with both light sensitivity and higher BOLD activity in the MT+/LO region. The MT+/LO region was localized as a region of abnormal functional connectivity with central white matter regions previ

[Clinical features of girls with Asperger disorders].

OBJECTIVES: Symptoms of Asperger disorder (AD) in girls are often different from those in boys. In this study, the characteristics of girls with AD were examined. METHODS: We retrospectively examined the records of 63 boys and 33 girls with AD. We evaluated the age, main problems, complications, and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (3rd Ed) scores. RESULTS: About 73% of girls were diagnosed with AD between 10 and 15 years of age, and they had physical complications or problems in the autonomic nervous system. Girls scored significantly lower in Mathematics score, and Block Design

"What's wrong with grandma?": depictions of Alzheimer's disease in children's storybooks.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) affects the entire family system, including young children. Yet there are few resources to help children understand AD. Storybooks are used to educate children about other diseases and may be useful in AD as well. In this study, we examined the depiction of AD in 33 English-language children's storybooks written specifically about AD. As a group, storybooks present AD as a brain disease, but provide little information about the diagnostic process or treatments. Clinical presentations are diverse among characters with AD, and no single book presents a comprehensive depi

Co-rumination and lifetime history of depressive disorders in children.

Co-rumination, the social process of frequently discussing and rehashing problems with peers, is hypothesized to increase risk for depression, particularly for girls. Although there is growing evidence for a relation between co-rumination and depressive symptoms in youth, it remains unclear whether these results generalize to diagnosable episodes of depression. Using a retrospective behavioral high-risk design with 81 children aged 9 to 14 years, we tested the hypothesis that children currently exhibiting high levels of co-rumination would be more likely to have a history of depressive diagnos

Predictors of sleep disturbances in Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom veterans reporting a trauma.

This investigation assessed the extent to which various health factors are associated with difficulties initiating and maintaining sleep (DIMS) and nightmares among Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom (OIF/OEF) veterans reporting a trauma (combat, noncombat, or a trauma before service). Veterans (N = 201, 88.1% male, mean age = 34.2, SD = 10.1) were referred by primary care for a behavioral health assessment upon evidence of psychiatric symptoms. Sleep problems were assessed using items from the PTSD checklist. After controlling for demographics and nonsleep PTSD symptoms, head

Toxicant exposure and mental health--individual, social, and public health considerations.

Thoughts and moods are the result of biological processes; disordered thoughts and moods may be the result of disordered biological processes. As brain dysfunction can manifest with emotional symptoms or behavioral signs, the etiology of some mental health afflictions and some abnormal conduct is pathophysiological rather than pathopsychological. Various studies confirm that some chemical toxicants which modify brain physiology have the potential to affect mood, cognitive function, and to provoke socially undesirable outcomes. With pervasive concern about myriad chemical agents in the environm

Sensorimotor seizures of pediatric onset with unusual posteriorly oriented rolandic spikes.

BACKGROUND: Benign childhood epilepsy with centro-temporal spikes (BECCT) is usually associated with anteriorly oriented rolandic discharges. We report an unusual type of childhood-onset epilepsy with sensorimotor seizures associated with posteriorly oriented rolandic discharges. METHODS: Among 942 patients who underwent simultaneous electroencephalography and magnetoencephalography (MEG) for epilepsy evaluation, we found 7 patients with sensorimotor seizures aged under 13 years at onset, with no abnormal magnetic resonance imaging findings, and posteriorly oriented rolandic discharges detect

An open pilot study of interpersonal psychotherapy for panic disorder (IPT-PD).

Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a time-limited psychotherapy initially developed to treat depression. It has yet to be studied systematically for treatment of panic disorder. We modified IPT for the treatment of panic disorder and tested this treatment in an open clinical trial with 12 patients seeking treatment of DSM-IV panic disorder. Patients were assessed before during and after treatment. At completion of treatment, nine patients (75%) were independently categorized as responders (i.e., rated as much improved or very much improved on the Clinical Global Impression-Change Scale). Sub

Functional recovery in a primate model of Parkinson's disease following motor cortex stimulation.

A concept in Parkinson's disease postulates that motor cortex may pattern abnormal rhythmic activities in the basal ganglia, underlying the genesis of observed motor symptoms. We conducted a preclinical study of electrical interference in the primary motor cortex using a chronic MPTP primate model in which dopamine depletion was progressive and regularly documented using 18F-DOPA positron tomography. High-frequency motor cortex stimulation significantly reduced akinesia and bradykinesia. This behavioral benefit was associated with an increased metabolic activity in the supplementary motor area

Acetylcholine and affective disorder.

We reviewed the evidence for involvement of central cholinergic neurons in affective disorder. Cholinomimetics inhibit speech, thought, and activity in most subjects, decrease manic symptoms and, in some affective disorder patients, produce depressive symptoms. Cholinomimetics also cause ACTH and cortisol secretion and decrease latency to REM sleep. It is unclear whether cholinomimetics are specifically "antimanic" or "depressogenic" or whether their fundamental effect is nonspecific behavioral inhibition; whether the observed effects of cholinomimetics are mediated largely through cholinergic
