In conclusion, the use of nystatin for fungal prophylaxis in hematology/oncology/bone marrow transplantation patients appears to convey little or no benefit over no therapy. Nystatin treatment significantly reduced the frequency of multiple-site colonization and of persistently positive oropharyngeal cultures, but was not able to prevent the occurrence of disseminated fungal infections. Other antifungal agents (e.g., ketoconazole, fluconazole, itraconazole, oral or intravenous amphotericin B) may be of benefit. OBJECTIVES: To compare the clinical usefulness of culture and wet smear microscopy in low-symptomatic vulvovaginal candidosis (VVC) diagnosis.
STUDY DESIGN: Women attending for contraceptive advice were screened for vaginal yeast fungi by culture and wet smear microscopy. A positive culture was found in 130 (13.2%) of the 983 women studied, while a positive wet smear was found in 133 (13.9%). In 40 (30%) of these women both the culture and wet smear was positive.

A retrospective study was made of all blood cultures performed over a 40-month period at the Ivrea-Castellamonte Hospital (Turin, Italy). A total of 4386 vials from 619 patients were examined. There were 619 positive vials (14.1%) from 131 patients (21.2%) corresponding to 145 bacteremia episodes, including 129 monomicrobial (89%) and 16 polymicrobial (11%). Mouth ulcers are a frequent cause of morbidity in patients rendered neutropenic as a result of chemotherapy. We report here a series of 28 such patients from whom swabs were taken for viral isolation and mycological culture. In 13 patients, herpes simplex virus (type I) was isolated and in 17 patients Candida albicans was cultured. Both organisms were isolated in 9 patients. Our results suggest that both a viral and fungal element may be important in the aetiology of oral ulceration and that antiviral and antifungal agents may each have a role in the prophylaxis and treatment of such patients.

A mouse model of localized candidosis in air-filled subcutaneous cysts imitating thrush has been developed and was used to test the efficacy of various antifungal drugs. The results were similar regardless whether cortisone or cyclophosphamide was used for immunosuppression. The highest efficacy was shown by amphotericin B in relatively high doses (2 mg/kg s.c.).
