This report describes the clinical and radiologic findings of a child who was stabbed with a pencil tip in his right upper eyelid, in what initially appeared to be an innocuous injury. The child presented again 3 weeks later with a combined orbital and frontal lobe brain abscess. The mechanism of injury is discussed, the orbital and neuro-surgical interventions are detailed, and the medical treatment is presented. Ophthalmologists should have a high index of suspicion for orbital foreign bodies and possible intracranial injury in cases of penetrating eyelid trauma.

Leptospirosis is an acute generalized infectious disease, caused by spirochaetes, Leptospira interrogans. The severity of the disease ranges from an asymptomatic subclinical course to a fatal outcome. PURPOSE: To report a case of Langerhans cell histiocytosis presenting as periorbital cellulitis.
DESIGN: Interventional case report.
METHODS: A 3-year-old girl presented with periorbital swelling of the right upper lid laterally of two days' duration. A history of recent eye trauma was reported.
RESULTS: Computed tomography showed a soft tissue mass that eroded the frontozygomatic suture. The lesion was debulked through a lateral orbitotomy. Electron microscopy disclosed Birbeck granules. Immunohistochemistry stained positively for CD68 and CD1a antigenic determinants.

This case report describes Nocardia pericarditis in a newly diagnosed human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) patient as an initial manifestation. Previously, two cases of Nocardia pericarditis were reported in patients with established HIV infection. To our knowledge this is the first case of Nocardia pericarditis as an initial manifestation of HIV infection. This case substantiates and emphasizes the importance of identifying Nocardia as an infectious cause of pericarditis in patients with acquired immunodeficiency. Long-term survival may be achieved with a combined medical and surgical approach.

We report about a 57-year-old patient suffering from the typical symptoms of normal-pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) including gait disturbance, urinary incontinence, and mental deterioration. CSF analysis established the diagnosis of chronic active Lyme neuroborreliosis with lymphocytic pleocytosis and intrathecal Borrelia burgdorferi antibody production. This study evaluated the effects of combining antibiotic therapy with the application of a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug on the degradation of articular cartilage for an animal model of Staphylococcal septic arthritis.
