Comparison of the Effect of Pyridostigmine and Sugammadex on Emergence Delirium in Pediatric Patients Undergoing Strabismus Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: Emergence delirium (ED) is a common complication in pediatric patients following general anesthesia. Reduced cholinergic neurotransmission is closely associated with cognitive impairment and an increased risk of delirium. This study aimed to compare the effects of a cholinesterase inhibitor versus sugammadex-used as neuromuscular blockade reversal agents-on the incidence of ED following pediatric strabismus surgery. Methods: Seventy-six patients, aged 4-7 years, were enrolled and randomly allocated to either the pyridostigmine group (Group P) or the sugammadex group (Group S). The

Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback to Manage the Mental Health of Adults With Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Pilot Study.

Irritable bowel syndrome [IBS] is classified as a disorder of gut-brain interaction related to stress with no curative option. Heart rate variability biofeedback [HRV-BFB] is a non-drug therapy recently suggested to be relevant in reducing both autonomic nervous system [ANS] dysregulations and psychiatric comorbidities. Nevertheless, empirical evidence is still scarce and only a few studies have tested HRV-BFB in adults with IBS. Our aims were therefore to examine the effectiveness of HRV-BFB training on the psychophysiological states of 29 adults with IBS. The study took place in three sessio

Ensemble deep learning for Alzheimer's disease diagnosis using MRI: Integrating features from VGG16, MobileNet, and InceptionResNetV2 models.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the accumulation of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain, leading to distinctive patterns of neuronal dysfunction and the cognitive decline emblematic of dementia. Currently, over 5 million individuals aged 65 and above are living with AD in the United States, a number projected to rise by 2050. Traditional diagnostic methods are fraught with challenges, including low accuracy and a significant propensity for misdiagnosis. In response to these diagnostic challenges, our study develops and evaluates an

Evaluating Traditional, Deep Learning and Subfield Methods for Automatically Segmenting the Hippocampus From MRI.

Given the relationship between hippocampal atrophy and cognitive impairment in various pathological conditions, hippocampus segmentation from MRI is an important task in neuroimaging. Manual segmentation, though considered the gold standard, is time-consuming and error-prone, leading to the development of numerous automatic segmentation methods. However, no study has yet independently compared the performance of traditional, deep learning-based and hippocampal subfield segmentation methods within a single investigation. We evaluated 10 automatic hippocampal segmentation methods (FreeSurfer, Sy

Accelerated brain ageing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The impact of SARS-CoV-2 and the COVID-19 pandemic on brain health is recognised, yet specific effects remain understudied. We investigate the pandemic's impact on brain ageing using longitudinal neuroimaging data from the UK Biobank. Brain age prediction models are trained from hundreds of multi-modal imaging features using a cohort of 15,334 healthy participants. These models are then applied to an independent cohort of 996 healthy participants with two magnetic resonance imaging scans: either both collected before the pandemic (Control groups), or one before and one after the pandemic onset

Neuroanatomical dimensions in major depression linked to cognition, adverse life events, self-harm, metabolomics and genetics.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a leading cause of disability worldwide, yet its diagnosis relies on clinical symptoms alone. METHODS: Using the semi-supervised machine learning algorithm, Heterogeneity through Discriminative Analysis (HYDRA), we had identified two neuroanatomical dimensions in deeply phenotyped (i.e., comprehensively assessed across neuroimaging, clinical, and behavioural domains), medication-free participants with MDD from the COORDINATE-MDD consortium. In the present study, we apply this pre-trained HYDRA model to the UK Biobank (UKB) to validate these dimen

Bidirectional relationship between attentional deficits and escalation of nicotine intake in male rats.

RATIONALE: People with tobacco addiction have deficits in cognition, in particular deficits in attention. It is not clear however, whether deficits are a cause or a consequence, or both, of chronic nicotine use. Here we set out a series of experiments in rats to address this question and, more specifically, to assess the effects of exposure to and withdrawal from chronic nicotine self-administration on attentional performance. METHODS: Animals were trained in a 5-choice serial reaction time task to probe individual attentional performance and, then, were given access to a fixed versus increas

Personality of marathon runners: a narrative review of recent findings.

Participation in marathons has dramatically increased over the last few years. Marathon running has many proven beneficial effects, especially on cardiovascular health and fitness. Most research has focused on physiologic and pathophysiologic adaptations in connection with endurance exercise. Nevertheless, marathon running also has a major impact on psychological aspects and positively influences mental health, which has only recently attracted research interest. The present narrative review aimed to review the personality traits of marathon runners with an emphasis on recent literature. Marat

Vector-based navigation in desert ants: the significance of path-integration vectors.

In the longstanding discussion of whether insects, especially central place foragers such as bees and ants, use metric representations of their landmark surroundings (so-called "cognitive maps"), the ability to find novel shortcuts between familiar locations has been considered one of the most decisive proofs for the use of such maps. Here we show by channel-based field experiments that desert ants Cataglyphis can travel such shortcuts between locations (defined by memorized goal vectors) just on the basis of path integration. When trained to visit two spatially separated feeders A and B they

Septotemporal Variation of Information Processing in the Hippocampus of Fmr1 KO Rat.

INTRODUCTION: Fragile X messenger ribonucleoprotein (FMRP) is a protein involved in many neuronal processes in the nervous system including the modulation of synaptic transmission. The loss of FMRP produces the fragile X syndrome (FXS), a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting synaptic and neuronal function and producing cognitive impairments. However, the effects of FXS on short-term processing of synaptic inputs and neuronal outputs in the hippocampus have not yet been sufficiently clarified. Furthermore, it is not known whether dorsal and ventral hippocampi are affected similarly or not in F

Development and usability testing of a cognitive-behavioral therapy-guided self-help mobile app and social media group for the post-acute treatment of anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is often treated in the acute setting, but relapse after treatment is common. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is useful in the post-acute period, but access to trained providers is limited. Social support is also critical during this period. This study utilized a user-centered design approach to develop and evaluate the usability of a CBT-based mobile app and social networking component for post-acute AN support. METHOD: Participants (N = 19) were recently discharged from acute treatment for AN. Usability testing of the intervention was conducted over three

Distinct connectivity patterns between perception and attention-related brain networks characterize dyslexia: Machine learning applied to resting-state fMRI.

Diagnosis of dyslexia often occurs in late schooling years, leading to academic and psychological challenges. Furthermore, diagnosis is time-consuming, costly, and reliant on arbitrary cutoffs. On the other hand, automated algorithms hold great potential in medical and psychological diagnostics. The aim of the present study was to develop a machine learning tool for the detection of dyslexia in children based on the intrinsic connectivity patterns of different brain networks underlying perception and attention. Here, 117 children (8-12 years old; 58 females; 52 typical readers; TR and 65 child

Effects of cognitive behavioural therapy and exposure-response prevention on brain activation in obsessive-compulsive disorder patients: systematic review and meta-analysis.

Current psychotherapeutic treatments for OCD, while effective, have complex outcomes with mixed efficacy. Previous research has observed baseline brain activation patterns in OCD patients, elucidating some of the implications of this disorder. Observing the effects of evidence-based psychotherapeutics for OCD on brain activation (through MRI) may provide a more comprehensive outline of pathology. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effects of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) with exposure-response prevention (ERP) on brain activation in OCD patients. Feel it or deal with it: Oral perception and aspiration risk in early stroke.

BACKGROUND: Sensation and perception impairments are significant problems faced by individuals with early-stage stroke. Sensory inputs needed in swallowing guide the perceptual process with the involvement of cognitive functions. In the absence of sensory input, bolus perception may be altered, and swallowing safety may be compromised. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the oral perception of volume change and the aspiration risk of individuals with stroke and determine the relationship between oral perception and aspiration risk. METHODS: Total participants were 35. The Gugging Swallow
