Brief communication: virological outcomes and dolutegravir resistance mutations in HIV-infected patients: a multicenter retrospective cohort study in Mozambique.

The global HIV epidemic remains a major public health challenge, with DTG playing a key role in ART regimens due to its efficacy and tolerability. This study evaluated virological outcomes and resistance mutations in patients on DTG in Mozambique through a retrospective cohort study in seven DREAM centers. Data from 29,601 patients (98.1% on DTG) revealed a virological suppression rate of 95% (27,622/29,051). Factors positively associated with suppression included age > 50, longer ART duration, and being female. Of 17 resistance tests, 8 showed major mutations, including G118R and E138K. Resul

The perspectives of Jordanian speech-language pathologists towards the use of augmentative and alternative communication for persons with aphasia.

PURPOSE: Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) has been shown to support communication and quality of life for persons with aphasia (PWA), yet its use in Jordan remains underexplored. This mixed-methods study aimed to investigate the perspectives of Jordanian speech-language pathologists (SLPs) towards the use of AAC for PWA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Phase 1 involved a nationwide survey of 142 SLPs, with 101 responses analysed descriptively. Phase 2 of the study comprised two focus group discussions with 10 SLPs whose caseloads predominantly included PWA. RESULTS: From Phase 1 of th…

Predictive factors of alcohol initiation among Brazilian adolescents: assessing the role of attitudes, decision-making, communication, and resistance skills.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether attitudes toward drug use, as well as decision-making, communication, and alcohol resistance skills, act as predictors of alcohol use and binge drinking initiation among Brazilian students, considering sex differences. METHODS: In a longitudinal sample of 1,103 seventh-grade students from 15 Brazilian public schools, we explored if attitudes toward drug use and decision-making, communication, and alcohol resistance skills at baseline predicted alcohol outcomes 9 months later. RESULTS: Lower levels of resistance skills (i.e., ORboys = 0.29; 95%CI 0.12-0.70) and …

The dialogue dilemma: the role of patient-clinician communication for low-income people who smoke and manage multiple conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Adults from low-income backgrounds who smoke face significant health disparities related to tobacco use, often at disproportionately high rates. These individuals are more likely to endure multiple mental and physical (MP) health conditions, which can negatively influence their self-rated health (SRH). The quality and effectiveness of patient-clinician communication (PCC) can influence how patients perceive their own health. Understanding how PCC influences SRH among low-income adults who smoke and suffer from multiple MP conditions is essential for clinical care as multimorbidit…

Evaluating the effect of a non-linguistic cognitive intervention on functional communication in global aphasia: A case series study.

BACKGROUND: Global aphasia is a severe communication disorder affecting all language modalities, commonly caused by stroke. Evidence as to whether the functional communication of people with global aphasia (PwGA) can improve after speech and language therapy (SLT) is limited and conflicting. This is partly because cognition, which is relevant to participation in therapy and implicated in successful functional communication, can be severely impaired in global aphasia. Cognitive treatments that aim to improve functional communication for people with aphasia do exist, but few have been trialled w…

Speech-language therapists perspectives on tele-augmentative and alternative communication (tele-AAC) across three low-and middle-income countries.

Most individuals with disabilities live in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) where healthcare services such as speech-language therapy are limited. The challenge of accessing services was compounded by the COVID-19 global pandemic, leaving many people who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) vulnerable. The aim of this study was to investigate the nature of tele-AAC across three LMICs as described by speech-language therapists (SLTs). Although studies have been published about speech-language therapy services provided via telepractice, some specifically on AAC services, n…

"I do not know these words, neither does he": Unravelling multilingual and multiparty communication in speech and language therapy.

Speech language therapists (SLTs) are often challenged in their work with patients with different communication vulnerabilities. Even though SLTs are trained experts in communication, experiences from the field indicate that they often feel uncertain in interactions with multilingual patients and their families. This paper explores how language discordance between SLTs and multilingual parents influences regular institutional interaction. A discourse analysis is conducted on 33 authentic transcripts of specific discourse types between SLTs, parents, and their children within a multilingual con…

Short communication: Dynamic chemical labelling allows the measurement of the paracetamol toxicity biomarker microRNA-122 in hospital clinical laboratories.

MicroRNA-122 (miR-122) is a sensitive biomarker for paracetamol-induced liver injury. This study assessed the diagnostic performance of dynamic chemical labelling (DCL) combined with an immunoassay platform to quantify miR-122 in human serum, as a proof-of-concept for hospital use. This study used serum samples from 19 healthy individuals and 19 patients with paracetamol drug-induced liver injury (DILI) collected in previous studies. miR-122 was labelled with a biotinylated SMART-Base and quantified using a multiplex, bead-based, fluorescence detection system. The median miR-122 concentration

Transcriptional network analysis of PTEN-protein-deficient prostate tumors reveals robust stromal reprogramming and signs of senescent paracrine communication.

Among the extensive genomic alterations in prostate cancer, phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) deletion stands out as one of the most consistently observed events. PTEN loss in prostate tumors is primarily associated with cancer-cell proliferation and survival through the activation of the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)-protein kinase B (AKT)-mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) (PI3K-AKT-mTOR) signaling pathway. However, the use of PTEN as a robust biomarker in clinical practice is hampered by its complex epigenetic, transcriptional and post-translational regulation. In situ protein as
