Is an Attachable Oral Wound Dressing Effective at Closing an Acute Oroantral Communication?

BACKGROUND: An oroantral communication (OAC) is an acute opening after tooth extractions in the posterior maxilla that requires immediate closure. The search for a noninvasive and cost-effective OAC treatment method remains ongoing. PURPOSE: This study assessed the effect of oral wound dressing (OWD) on acute OACs of 2-5 mm and compared it with suturing sterile gauze (SG) and plasma-rich fibrin (PRF). STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, AND SAMPLE: A randomized, double-blind clinical trial was conducted at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Erciyes University. The sample

Accelerating diversity in Alzheimer's disease research by partnering with a community advisory board.

INTRODUCTION: Community advisory boards (CABs) and researcher partnerships present a promising opportunity to accelerate enrollment of underrepresented groups (URGs). We outline the framework for how the CAB and researchers at the Indiana Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (IADRC) partnered to accelerate URG participation in AD neuroimaging research. METHODS: CAB and the IADRC researchers partnered to increase the CAB's impact on URG study enrollment through community and research interactions. Community interactions included the CAB collaboratively building a network of URG focused communit

Preliminary analysis of mucosal and salivary bacterial communities in oral lichen planus.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the bacterial community from different oral niches (buccal mucosa and saliva) in oral lichen planus (OLP) patients. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This preliminary study analyzed site-specific (mucosa and saliva) microbial landscape of 20 OLP patients and 10 healthy controls. RESULTS: The microbial diversity was similar between OLP patients and healthy controls in both salivary and mucosal communities. However, the topological properties of co-occurrence networks of salivary and mucosal microbiome were different between healthy controls and OLP patients. SparCC analysis inf

An alternative method for monitoring and interpreting influenza A in communities using wastewater surveillance.

Seasonal influenza is an annual public health challenge that strains healthcare systems, yet population-level prevalence remains under-reported using standard clinical surveillance methods. Wastewater surveillance (WWS) of influenza A can allow for reliable flu surveillance within a community by leveraging existing severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) WWS networks regardless of the sample type (primary sludge vs. primary influent) using an RT-qPCR-based viral RNA detection method for both targets. Additionally, current influenza A outbreaks disproportionately affect the

IS26 drives the dissemination of bla CTX-M genes in an Ecuadorian community.

The horizontal gene transfer events are the major contributors to the current spread of CTX-M-encoding genes, the most common extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL), and many clinically crucial antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes. This study presents evidence of the critical role of IS26 transposable element for the mobility of bla CTX-M gene among Escherichia coli isolates from children and domestic animals in the community. We suggest that the nucleotide sequences of IS26-bla CTX-M could be used to study bla CTX-M transmission between humans, domestic animals, and the environment, because und

Comparison of methods to detect interspecific competition among parasites in depauperate communities.

Because conducting experimental coinfections is intractable in most parasite systems, inferences about the presence and strength of interspecific interactions in parasite communities are often made from analyses of field data. It is unclear whether methods used to test for competition are able to detect competition in field-collected datasets. Data from a study of the intestinal helminth communities of creek chub (Semotilus atromaculatus) were used to explore the potential of commonly available methods to detect negative interactions among parasite species in species-poor, low-intensity commun

Community- and individual-level correlates of HIV incidence in HPTN 071 (PopART).

INTRODUCTION: Universal HIV testing and treatment aims to identify all people living with HIV and offer them treatment, decreasing the number of individuals with unsuppressed HIV and thus reducing HIV transmission. Longitudinal follow-up of individuals with and without HIV in a cluster-randomized trial of communities allowed for the examination of community- and individual-level measures of HIV risk and HIV incidence. METHODS: HPTN 071 (PopART) was a three-arm cluster-randomized trial conducted between 2013 and 2018 that evaluated the use of two combination HIV prevention strategies implement

Dental patients' communication preferences for learning about HPV-related topics.

Oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) has the highest incidence of any cancer caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). Oral health providers are urged to support the use of the HPV vaccine, which was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the prevention of OPC in 2020. This study evaluated the preferences of dental patients regarding 11 modalities for learning about HPV-related topics from their oral health providers. An online survey was administered to US adults aged 18 to 45 years (n = 285) to assess their communication modality preferences, prior experience discussing HPV with oral health p

Psychedelic Research and Therapeutic Practices: Embracing Communities, Groups, and Traditional Knowledge.

The global prevalence of substance abuse and mental disorders continues to challenge healthcare systems, with one in eight individuals affected. The therapeutic potential of psychedelics is recognized not only for treating mental disorders but also for enhancing well-being and promoting pro-social behaviors. Conventional biomedical research models fall short in addressing the broader health needs of populations and poorly suited for overcoming barriers to service delivery. This special issue includes six articles that explore alternative approaches to psychedelic research and practice, emphasi

Tobacco Knowledge, Attitudes, and Services Among Latino/a Community Health Workers.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco-related illnesses are among the leading preventable causes of death for Latinos/as in the United States. Latino/a groups are less likely to receive advice to quit from health professionals or use tobacco cessation strategies. The position of community health workers (CHWs) warrants further attention to address tobacco-related disparities in Latino/a communities. The objective of this study was to describe CHWs' roles to inform future smoking cessation training to ensure relevance and accessibility. METHODS: A needs assessment survey, including a 10-item tobacco knowledge q
