Predicting the Risk of HIV Infection and Sexually Transmitted Diseases Among Men Who Have Sex With Men: Cross-Sectional Study Using Multiple Machine Learning Approaches.

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at high risk for HIV infection and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). However, there is a lack of accurate and convenient tools to assess this risk. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop machine learning models and tools to predict and assess the risk of HIV infection and STDs among MSM. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study that collected individual characteristics of 1999 MSM with negative or unknown HIV serostatus in Western China from 2013 to 2023. MSM self-reported their STD history and were tested for HIV. We compared the accu

Vaginal and urinary evaluation of lactobacilli quantification by qPCR: Identifying factors that influence urinary detection and the quantity of Lactobacillus.

Vaginal colonization with lactobacilli has been linked to the health of the lower urinary tract in women. There is growing evidence that the bladder has its microbiome related closely to the vagina. In this study, we compared the three common vaginal Lactobacillus species (L. jensenii, L. iners and L. crispatus) in vaginal and urine samples to identify factors that influence urinary detection and the quantity of Lactobacillus. We used quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) assays to measure the concentration of Lactobacillus jensenii, L. iners and L. crispatus in paired vaginal swabs and clean-catc

Prevalence and predictors of sex under the influence of psychoactive substances among young people in informal settlements in Kampala, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: The use of psychoactive substances such as alcohol, heroin and marijuana is associated with negative health outcomes such as sexual violence and unintended pregnancies, and risky sexual behaviours. Although there is evidence linking psychoactive substance use and risky sexual behaviours such as inconsistent condom use and multiple sexual relationships, there is limited data on sex under the influence of psychoactive substances among young people. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and predictors of sex under the influence of psychoactive substances among young people in

Sexual and reproductive health services during outbreaks, epidemics, and pandemics in sub-Saharan Africa: a literature scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic could worsen adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH). We sought evidence on the indirect impacts of previous infectious disease epidemics and the current COVID-19 pandemic on the uptake of ASRH in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) to design relevant digital solutions. METHODS: We undertook a literature scoping review to synthesize evidence on the indirect impacts of COVID-19 on ASRH in SSA per the Arksey and O'Malley framework and PRISMA reporting guidelines. We conducted the search on PubMed, Embase, Google Scholar, and ResearchGate in June and November 2020

Changes in prevalence of violence and risk factors for violence and HIV among children and young people in Kenya: a comparison of the 2010 and 2019 Kenya Violence Against Children and Youth Surveys.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown a high prevalence of violence among young people in Kenya. Violence is a known risk factor for HIV acquisition and these two public health issues could be viewed as a syndemic. In 2010, Kenya became the third country to implement the Violence Against Children and Youth Survey (VACS). The study found a high prevalence of violence in the country. Led by the Government of Kenya, stakeholders implemented several prevention and response strategies to reduce violence. In 2019, Kenya implemented a second VACS. This study examines the changes in violence and ris

Vaginal microbiota evaluation and prevalence of key pathogens in ecuadorian women: an epidemiologic analysis.

Vaginal infection is a gynecological problem in women of reproductive age with multiple health outcomes. The most common forms of infection include bacterial vaginosis (BV), vulvovaginal candidiasis (VC), and aerobic vaginitis (AV). Our main goals were to evaluate different types of vaginal infections in Ecuadorian women in a large urban area (Quito) and to characterize the vaginal microbiota colonization by opportunistic species. We collected vaginal swabs and epidemiological surveys from 414 women from June 2016 to July of 2017. We analyzed vaginal samples for the presence of any vaginal inf

HIV risk, risk perception and uptake of HIV testing and counseling among youth men who have sex with men attending a gay sauna.

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) are amongst populations at-risk for HIV acquisition in Thailand. In youth MSM (aged 15-24 years), the incidence of HIV infection has substantially increased. However, data on HIV risk, risk perception and HIV testing and counseling (HTC) uptake among youth MSM in hotspots are limited. METHODS: A subanalysis of a prospective study among Thai MSM attending a gay sauna was conducted. HIV risk and risk perception were assessed by an anonymous survey. The MSM were categorized as having actual "low-risk", "moderate-risk" and "high-risk" for HIV acquisitio

Sexually Transmitted Infections on the Rise in PrEP Users.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with oral Truvada (tenofovir plus emtricitabine) is effective at preventing HIV infection in high-risk homosexual men. In the United States, PrEP was approved in 2012 and is reimbursed by Medicaid and the majority of private insurers. The situation is diverse and not uniform in the European Union, being PrEP more widely used in France than in the rest of countries. Concerns have been raised that PrEP use may be accompanied by the phenomena of risk compensation or behavioral disinhibition, whereby PrEP users' perception of decreased risk of HIV acquisition may le

Differences in the Access to Sterilization between Women Living and Not Living with HIV: Results from the GENIH Study, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: In many countries, young women of reproductive age have been especially affected by the HIV epidemic, which have fostered research to better understand how HIV infection influences and shapes women´s fertility and reproductive and sexual decisions. In Brazil, few studies have focused on the impact of the HIV epidemic on contraceptive choices among women living with HIV (WLHIV). OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the impact HIV infection may have in the access to female sterilization in Brazil, using a time-to-event analysis. METHODS: A cross-sectional quantitative study (GENIH study

Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia: risk factors for persistence and recurrence in adolescents.

One of the most common sexually transmitted infections in adolescents is human papillomavirus. These infections can occur in one or multiple areas of the female genitalia but the vulva is usually the initial site of implantation for HPV. We carried out a long-term follow-up study of adolescents to evaluate the incidence of single or multiple lesions in the lower genital tract, the correlation between sexual behaviour and their localisation and behavioural risk factors for persistence and recurrence of HPV lesions and cervical intraepithelial lesion (CIN). We interviewed 268 women aged 12-21 ye

An updated review of environmental estrogen and androgen mimics and antagonists.

For the last 40 y, substantial evidence has surfaced on the hormone-like effects of environmental chemicals such as pesticides and industrial chemicals in wildlife and humans. The endocrine and reproductive effects of these chemicals are believed to be due to their ability to: (1) mimic the effect of endogenous hormones, (2) antagonize the effect of endogenous hormones, (3) disrupt the synthesis and metabolism of endogenous hormones, and (4) disrupt the synthesis and metabolism of hormone receptors. The discovery of hormone-like activity of these chemicals occurred long after they were release

Repeat HIV testers at a London same-day testing clinic.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the characteristics of repeat HIV testers with first-time testers in a National Health Service HIV testing clinic in London. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to clinic attenders between September 1995 and January 1996. The sample was stratified by gender and sexual orientation. Repeat and first-time testers were compared with respect to recent sexual risk behaviour, reasons for taking the HIV test, condom use, knowledge of sex partner's HIV status, and sociodemographic and psychosocial variables. RESULTS: Of 965 clinic attenders su

Socio-demographics, sexual behaviours, and use of HIV prevention services among men who have sex with men and women in Western China.

This paper looks into the differences of sexual risk behaviours and prevention services among men who have sex with men and women and men who have sex with men only. The data from a cross-sectional survey of 159 men who have sex with men and women and 1186 men who have sex with men only in western China is analysed. It is found that men who have sex with men and women, with multiple anal sex partners, have higher rates of selling and buying sex than men who have sex with men only, but obtain less HIV-related knowledge from partners or HIV consulting and testing services. More efforts should be
