A case is reported in which a Nucleus 22 channel intracochlear implant was used to treat a deaf Hungarian woman (aged 37 years) with a 34-year history of grand mal (GM) epilepsy maintained on carbamazepine-diazepam combination therapy who had not benefited from conventional hearing aids. Pre-operative electrical stimulation of the acoustic nerve, however, exhibited a good nerve function with no evidence of abnormal waveforms in the electroencephalogram (EEG). Successful intracochlear insertion of the 22 electrode resulted in a 40 dB hearing improvement at frequencies 250-2000 Hz in the implant

Here we report on a prepubertal boy with the Berk-Tabatznik syndrome. Manifestations included short stature, congenital optic atrophy, and hypoplasia of the cervical vertebral bodies and distal phalanges. Prognosis was adversely affected by visual and auditory difficulties. The cause of this condition remains unknown.

After a profound review of normal embryology, a systematical and topographical classification of congenital middle ear malformations in general and of meatal atresia in particular is proposed; the classification of congenital aural atresia is essentially based on the recognition of two types according to the course of the facial nerve in its third segment: in type I, a normal topography of the facial nerve is found and consequently, the middle ear anomalies are rather minimal; in type II, an antero-superior displacement of the facial nerve in its third segment is recognized and the middle ear

While it is clear that the majority of the world's population suffers some deterioration of hearing--especially at high frequencies--with the advance of age, it is equally clear that some individuals reach very old age with clinically normal hearing. It is often difficult to separate the biological changes of senility from the effects of auditory environmental changes, and of specific pathological changes associated with specific disease entities. A better understanding of the etiology of presbyacusis is needed. The first step towards this end is the recognition that not all hearing impairment

A posterior retrosinus approach was used for 50 vestibular neurotomies to treat patients with severe "Ménière's" disease. The pontocerebellar angle is approached by trephination of a 2 cm diameter opening immediately behind the mastoid and lateral sinus. The acoustic-facial nerve bundle lies 55 mm deep to the craniotomy opening. The vestibular nerve is separated from the cochlear and sectioned, the facial nerve not being at risk as it lies much deeper. Results after a minimum follow up of one year showed recovery from vertigo in 96 p. 100 of cases. Deafness, which was unchanged following surge…

Craniotubular dysplasias and craniotubular hyperostoses are a group of confusing disorders in which the cranial involvement may cause compression of facial and auditory nerves. Two of the hyperostotic conditions that regularly produce cranial nerve compression are sclerosteosis and the recessive form of endosteal hyperostosis (van Buchem's disease). Both have identical radiological features with cranial involvement presenting in childhood. The Dutch and South African cases have come from relatively close-knit communities, those in the latter country being Afrikaners who had their origins in Ho

Histopathologic evidence offered by a case of Morquio's disease and observed in the hearing organ showed widespread collagen damage, possibly initiated by the general hemorrhageous tendency, while the family history bore evidence of a genetic source. The clinical manifestations comprise striking dwarfism, beaking of the lumbar spine, sternal bulging, flaring of the rib cage, falt vertebrae, marked osteoporosis, prominent joints, semi-crouching stance, short nose. Roentgenograms showed retarded ossification.

Temporal bone changes are described in a 57-year-old man who had sudden onset of dizziness and unilateral deafness two months before death. The patient suffered from hypertension, and congestive and renal failure. At autopsy, subarachnoid hemorrhage with punctate cortical hemorrhages and arteriolar thickening involved the right superior cerebellar hemisphere. The pathological changes involved primarily the right cochlea, saccule and posterior ampulla, and were consistent with vascular embarrassment of the temporal bone of two months duration. The cochlea demonstrated total loss of the organ of…
