Oral health status in patients with moderate-severe and terminal renal failure.

AIMS: To evaluate the oral health status of patients with moderate-severe chronic renal failure (CRF) and with terminal renal failure (TRF). DESIGN: The study group was formed of 50 patients: 22 (44%) with moderate-severe CRF and 28 (56%) with TRF included in a haemodialysis programme. The controls (n=64) presented similar characteristics with regard to sex, age, weight and educational level. A single dentist performed an intraoral examination on all the subjects, gathering information on: number of decayed, missing or filled teeth; supragingival plaque accumulation; calculus deposits; period

Educational strategies associated with development of problem-solving, critical thinking, and self-directed learning.

This article was developed for the Commission on Change and Innovation in Dental Education (CCI), established by the American Dental Education Association. CCI was created because numerous organizations within organized dentistry and the educational community have initiated studies or proposed modifications to the process of dental education, often working to achieve positive and desirable goals but without coordination or communication. The fundamental mission of CCI is to serve as a focal meeting place where dental educators and administrators, representatives from organized dentistry, the d

Validation of self-reported periodontal disease: a systematic review.

Self-report is an efficient and accepted means of assessing many population characteristics, risk factors, and diseases, but has rarely been used for periodontal disease (chronic periodontitis). The availability of valid self-reported measures of periodontal disease would facilitate epidemiologic studies on a much larger scale, allow for integration of new studies of periodontal disease within large ongoing studies, and facilitate lower-cost population surveillance of periodontitis. Several studies have been conducted to validate self-reported measures for periodontal disease, but results have

Temporomandibular disorders after whiplash injury: a controlled, prospective study.

AIMS: Whiplash injury to the neck is often considered a significant risk factor for development of temporomandibular disorders (TMD), and has been proposed to produce internal derangements of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Few studies, however, have examined TMD-related pain in acute whiplash patients compared with a matched control group. The aim of the present study was to assess pain and sensorimotor function in the craniofacial region in an unselected group of patients sustaining a motor vehicle accident involving a rear collision. METHODS: Prospectively, 19 acute whiplash patients ex

Oral health and health related behaviours among three-year-old children born to first and second generation Pakistani mothers in Bradford, UK.

Many young Muslim children whose families originated from the Indian sub-continent have poorer levels of oral health than their indigenous White peers, but it is unclear whether and to what extent subsequent generations may be similarly disadvantaged. This study aimed to compare dental health and associated behavioural attributes among United Kingdom-born three-year-old children of first and second generation Pakistani Muslim mothers resident in areas of social deprivation in Bradford, West Yorkshire. Multi-lingual interviews completed a home-based, semi-structured questionnaire, and a dental

Root resorption related to orthodontics and other factors: a review of the literature.

Each patient (and parents or guardian) should be clearly informed that there is a real possibility of one or more teeth undergoing root resorption during orthodontic procedures. They should sign an Information and Consent Form arranged by the dentist that they understand these risks before treatment is begun. Open bite cases possess significantly great degrees of resorption. Since trauma is closely associated with root resorption, the patient (and parents or guardian) should be questioned concerning previous traumatic occurrences that involved blows or accidents involving the teeth. Periapical

Treating tumors of the sublingual glands, including a useful technique for repair of the floor of the mouth after resection.

BACKGROUND: From a 55-year experience with about 4,000 patients treated for salivary gland tumors, we have identified 18 patients (0.5%) who received definitive treatment for neoplasms arising in the sublingual glands. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patient ages ranged from 35 to 76 years (median 59), and men and women were equally represented. All had malignant tumors, which included adenoid cystic carcinoma (9 patients), mucoepidermoid carcinoma (5 patients), and adenocarcinoma (4 patients). An asymptomatic swelling was the most common complaint (7 patients); the tumor was incidentally discovered by

Risk factors for total tooth loss in the United States; longitudinal analysis of national data.

The NHANES I Epidemiologic Follow-up Study (NHEFS) of 1982-84 collected longitudinal data from 10,523 individuals initially seen during the first National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES I) of 1971-75. Among this additional data was information on the incidence of total tooth loss during the 10 years between the surveys, which could then be added to NHANES I data to identify risk factors. In this analysis, a series of bivariate analyses were carried out, followed by logistic regression analysis to assess the simultaneous effect of major variables. Results showed that 7.4 percen

A look-back investigation of patients of an HIV-infected physician. Public health implications.

BACKGROUND: Transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) to five patients receiving care from an HIV-infected dentist in Florida has recently been reported. Current data indicate that the risk of HIV transmission from health care workers to patients is low. Despite this low risk, programs to notify patients of past exposure to an HIV-infected health care worker are being conducted with increasing frequency. METHODS: We recently conducted an investigation of all the patients cared for by an HIV-infected family physician during a period when he had severe dermatitis caused by Mycobact

Seasonal influenza vaccination: Attitudes and practices of healthcare providers in Jordan.

BACKGROUND: Influenza is associated with significant global morbidity and mortality, with vaccination being the primary preventive strategy. Despite recommendations, influenza vaccine uptake among healthcare providers (HCPs) remains suboptimal, especially in the Eastern Mediterranean. We aimed to assess the attitudes and practices of HCPs in Jordan regarding seasonal influenza vaccination and assess sources of variation thereof. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey study among a sample of HCPs practicing in Jordan (12/29/2020-04/26/2021). Participants completed a questionnaire asses

Perceived sources of stress amongst final year dental under graduate students in a dental teaching institution at Bangalore, India: a cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Dental schools are known to be highly demanding and stressful learning environments. Dentistry involves an acquisition of required academic, clinical and interpersonal skills during the course of learning. Practicing dentistry requires clinical skills and patient management skills, which also add to the stress perceived by the students. Identifying sources of stress represents the crucial first step towards advocating policy changes and strategies to alleviate the stressors and enhance students' stress coping skills. The aim of this study was to identify self-reported sources of th

Biomedicine in orthodontics: from tooth movement to facial growth.

Biomedicine has the potential to improve orthodontic and dentofacial orthopedic treatment significantly. The importance of biomedicine has grown as the result of three trends that have experienced rapid development in recent years: the increased molecularization of biology; the rise of computer modeling; and the greater application of experimentation to clinical settings. Despite this, the translation of new biologic knowledge to clinical practice in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics has been slow. Notably promising areas of orthodontic biomedical research can be recognized in diagnosis
