Post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety symptoms 19 years after the 1998 Dongting lake flood: A cross-sectional study.

This study aimed to examine the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety symptoms 19 years after the 1998 Dongting Lake flood and explore associated factors. A multistage cluster sampling method was used to select participants. A total of 932 individuals were included, of which 379 (40.7%) were male, 622 (66.7%) were aged ≥60 years, and 693 (74.4%) experienced ≥3 flood-related stressors. Multivariable logistic regression analyses indicated that flood-related stressors, positive coping, and negative coping were independently associated with PTSD, depression,

Psychological Pain as a Risk Factor for Suicidal Ideation: An Ecological Momentary Assessment Study on Inpatients With Depression With and Without Comorbid Borderline Personality Disorder.

Objective: Psychological pain (PP) is a potentially important risk factor for suicide. However, its temporal stability and association with suicidal ideation (SI) remain obscure. Whether PP represents a risk factor for SI independently of depression, anxiety, and hopelessness or is more prominent and temporally unstable in patients with depression and borderline personality disorder (BPD) is also unclear. Methods: From November 2020 to December 2022, psychiatric inpatients with depression without (N = 37) and with (N = 30) BPD were recruited to an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) study, w

The Association Between the Central Sensitisation Inventory and Temporomandibular Disorders Is Confounded by Migraine, Depression, Widespread Pain and Parafunction. A Cross-Sectional Telehealth Study.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are conditions that involve the temporomandibular joints, masticatory muscles, and associated tissues, causing orofacial pain. Central sensitisation (CS) is a relevant part of the TMD pathophysiology. Migraine, psychological aspects, parafunctional oral habits and widespread pain are commonly associated with both TMD and CS and could confound the association between them. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between painful TMD and the Central Sensitisation Inventory (CSI) score, and to assess the presence of confounders in this association

The relationship between self-control and symptoms of anxiety and depression in patients with eating disorders: a cross-sectional study including exploratory longitudinal data.

BACKGROUND: Personality style can partly be described as the way an individual controls and regulates emotions and can be divided into over- and undercontrol. Studies have indicated that personality style may impact the onset, clinical presentation, and recovery from an eating disorder (ED). Furthermore, symptoms of anxiety and depression are common in patients with EDs. However, the association between self-control levels and anxiety/depression symptoms in patients with EDs remains unknown. The main aim of this study was to assess how levels of self-control relate to anxiety/depression sympto

Disrupted functional connectivity associated with cognitive impairment in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and comorbid GAD and depression: a follow-up fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Impaired functional connectivity between the bilateral hemispheres may serve as the neural substrate for anxiety and depressive disorders, yet its role in comorbid generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and depression, as well as the effect of treatment on this connectivity, remains unclear. We sought to examine functional connectivity between homotopic regions of the 2 hemispheres (voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity [VMHC]) among people with GAD with and without comorbid depression at baseline and after a 4-week paroxetine treatment. METHODS: Drug-naïve patients with GAD, with or …

The Price of Growing Up in a Low-Income Neighborhood: A Scoping Review of Associated Depressive Symptoms and Other Mood Disorders among Children and Adolescents.

Neighborhoods, as built and social environments, have significant implications for mental health. Children raised in high-poverty neighborhoods, who are disproportionately Black, Indigenous, and people of color, have a greater risk of adverse life outcomes. Neighborhood gentrification is also salient when examining mental health outcomes as neighborhood economic contexts shift around a child. This review scopes, describes, synthesizes, and critiques the existing literature on the relationship between neighborhood poverty/gentrification and mood disorder symptoms among children ages 3-17 in the

The effect of a reduction in irrational beliefs on Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety symptoms in a group treatment for post-9/11 Veterans.

Previous research has indicated that a Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)-Informed Group focused on changing irrational beliefs to address comorbid depression and anxiety (as well as anger and guilt) in a combat Veteran population diagnosed with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) demonstrated significant reductions in depression and PTSD symptoms at posttreatment. However, mechanisms of change associated with improvement have not been evaluated. REBT theory suggests that a decline in irrational beliefs predicts a decrease in PTSD, depression, and anxiety symptoms. This study aimed to t

Detecting Depression and Anxiety Among Adolescents in South Africa: Validity of the isiXhosa Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7.

PURPOSE: Screening tools such as the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) could potentially be used in resource-limited settings to identify adolescents who need mental health support. We examined the criterion validity of the isiXhosa versions of the PHQ-9 and GAD-7 in detecting depression and anxiety among adolescents (10-19 years) in South Africa. METHODS: Adolescents were recruited from the general population and from nongovernmental organizations working with adolescents in need of mental health support. The PHQ-9 and GAD-7 were culturally

Being an adult sibling of an individual with autism spectrum disorder may be a predictor of loneliness and depression - Preliminary findings from a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to compare depression and loneliness among adult siblings of people on the autism spectrum, adult siblings of normotypic individuals, and adults raised alone (only child). In recent years, an increasing interest in the perspective of siblings of children diagnosed with autism has been observed, with studies among this population particularly concerned with the developmental trajectories of children and adolescents at "high risk" for ASD, rarely focusing on their mental well-being. METHODS: The respondents filled out: the survey on sociodemographic data des

Subregion-specific, modality-dependent and timescale-sensitive hippocampal connectivity alterations in patients with first-episode, drug-naïve major depression disorder.

BACKGROUND: Despite accumulating evidence for the hippocampus as a key dysfunctional node in major depressive disorder (MDD), previous findings are controversial possibly due to heterogeneous and small clinical samples, complicated hippocampal structure, and different imaging modalities and analytical methods. METHODS: We collected structural and resting-state functional MRI data from 100 first-episode, drug-naïve MDD patients and 99 healthy controls. A subset of the participants (34 patients and 33 controls) also completed a battery of neuropsychological tests and childhood trauma questionna…
