Cigarette smoke is the principal cause of emphysema. Recent attention has focused on the loss of alveolar fibroblasts in the development of emphysema. Huwentoxin-X (HWTX-X) is a novel peptide toxin, purified from the venom of the spider Ornithoctonus huwena.
