Intestinal malabsorption presenting with night blindness.

Night blindness from vitamin A deficiency was observed in a patient with intestinal malabsorption, which in turn was attributable to duodenal diverticulosis and bacterial growth. Monthly supplementation with vitamin A and correction of bacterial overgrowth with tetracycline resulted in a normalisation of plasma retinol levels and resolution of the night blindness.

Colovaginal fistula secondary to diverticular disease.

Colovaginal fistula is infrequently encountered in gynecologic practice, but, when it does occur, diverticular disease is the most common cause. This paper discusses current concepts in etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with colovaginal fistula secondary to diverticular disease. Review of the literature reveals that a majority of patients have a history of hysterectomy and are primarily diagnosed by barium enema. The current trend in treatment is surgical correction with primary resection and anastomosis.

[Compression pneumatocele of the lacrimal sac].

Case report on a 39-year-old man who for five years suffered from a recurrent, firm, crepitant swelling in the medial canthal region after coughing and sneezing. The swelling could be eliminated by digital compression. During a severe bout of sneezing a walnut-sized swelling suddenly occurred which could not be eliminated by compression. Echographic and intraoperative findings confirmed the diagnosis of a large, diverticulous pneumatocele that had compressed the lacrimal sac to such an extent that the entrapped air could not escape. Endoscopy of the nose revealed a wide nasolacrimal ostium, wi

Campylobacter pylori infection in Meckel's diverticula containing gastric mucosa.

A retrospective survey was undertaken of 228 resected Meckel's diverticula to determine if there was any evidence of Campylobacter pylori infection in diverticula containing gastric mucosa. Among the 65 diverticula with gastric mucosa one was heavily infected with organisms having the morphological appearances of C pylori. The specimen had been removed from a six year old Samoan boy who had been admitted with small bowel obstruction. Infection and associated mucosal inflammatory infiltrate were limited to areas of gastric mucosa only. The detection of the organism at this site remote from the

Use of the fibreoptic laryngoscope in pharyngeal pouch surgery.

A further new application of the fibreoptic laryngoscope as an adjunct to the excision of pharyngeal pouches is described. Its use facilitates the procedure and thus reduces the time of surgery. This is clearly advantageous, particularly as many patients with pharyngeal pouches are elderly and may be less than fully fit especially if overspill from the pouch has caused recurrent chest infections.

The role of vesicostomy in the management of anterior urethral valves in neonates and infants.

We performed vesicostomy as the initial form of management in 2 male newborns and 1 infant with anterior urethral valves associated with proximal urethral diverticula and bilateral hydronephrosis. Prompt improvement in the degree of hydronephrosis was noted after vesicostomy in all 3 patients along with improvement in renal function in 2 who had presented with renal insufficiency. Subsequently, 2 patients have undergone vesicostomy closure and transurethral valve fulguration, and 1 also required ureteral reimplantation for persistent vesicoureteral reflux. The use of vesicostomy in the newborn

Etiopathogenesis and biological behavior of feline vesicourachal diverticula. Don't just do something--stand there.

Asymptomatic microscopic urachal remnants located at the vertex of the urinary bladder are common in cats. Because they reduce the tensile strength of the bladder wall at this location, they represent risk factors for development of acquired macroscopic diverticula in cats with lower urinary tract disorders. Elimination of the underlying cause of lower urinary tract disease is frequently associated with resolution of acquired macroscopic vesicourachal diverticula.

Incidence of methanogenic bacteria in a sigmoidoscopy population: an association of methanogenic bacteria and diverticulosis.

This study determined the incidence and concentration of methane-producing bacteria in tap water enema samples of 130 individuals taken before sigmoidoscopy. The number of subjects classified in five major colonic groups were as follows: normal colon 36, diverticulosis 57, inflammatory bowel disease 11, colon polyps 34, and colon cancer 11. Some patients were placed in more than one category. Ninety four of the subjects or 72% had methanogenic bacteria ranging in concentration from 6 to about 3 X 10(10)/g dry weight of faeces. The predominant methanogen in all groups was Methanobrevibacter smi

Jejunal diverticulosis with perforation as a complication of Fabry's disease.

This study presents the case of a patient who had jejunal diverticulosis with perforation and abscess formation as a complication of Fabry's disease. Light microscopy disclosed glycolipid deposition in the neurons and nerve fibers of the intestinal nerve plexuses and smooth muscle. Silver stains of the myenteric plexus in the involved segment of the bowel showed enlarged, granular argyrophobic neurons and a marked decrease in the number of argyrophilic neurons, with those remaining being enlarged and distorted by the cytoplasmic glycolipid accumulation. These abnormalities of the myenteric ple

Colonic ischemic necrosis following therapeutic embolization.

Transcatheter embolization of the middle colic artery for diverticular bleeding was followed by ischemic necrosis in the transverse colon at the site of previous anastomosis and stricture formation. This is a potential complication of intra-arterial embolization for colonic bleeding.
