Evaluating the effectiveness of satellite image super-resolution for road quality monitoring.

Monitoring road infrastructure is essential for accessibility and economic development, yet data scarcity remains a major constraint in many developing countries. Satellite-based deep learning approaches provide a scalable alternative, but the coarse resolution of freely available imagery may limit performance. This study evaluates whether generative adversarial network-based super-resolution can improve road roughness classification from Sentinel-2 imagery. Using a national dataset of 124,462 road segments from the Philippines, we compare classification results from native medium-resolution i…

Genetic evolution and epidemiological dynamics of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus in Guangxi, China, from 2020 to 2023.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) remains a major threat to the global swine industry, leading to severe economic losses due to high mortality and morbidity in piglets. Although significant advances have been made in understanding its genetic features, comprehensive studies on the genetic evolution and epidemiology of PEDV remain limited. In this study, we analyzed PEDV N gene sequences obtained from Guangxi during the period of 2020 to 2023, alongside co-infection patterns involving other enteric viruses, including Porcine Rotavirus (PoRV) and Transmissible Gastroenteritis Virus (TGEV).

GLP-1 receptor agonists in pediatric obesity.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) have transformed the management of obesity in adults and are now gaining attention in pediatric populations facing a dramatic rise of obesity prevalence and related comorbidities. In addition to weight loss, their role extends to cardiometabolic effects and improvements of kidney function. Liraglutide and semaglutide have demonstrated clinically meaningful efficacy in adolescents, leading to FDA and EMA approvals for patients ≥12 years. Ongoing trials are being conducted to combine GLP-1 analogues with other effective molecules or with baria

Color Assessments and Glycolysis of Cetylpyridinium Chloride-Containing Aqueous Solutions and Commercial Mouthwashes.

Background: Effective cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC)-based mouthwashes critically depend on maintaining maximum levels of bioavailable CPC to deliver optimum antimicrobial benefits. While this is traditionally assessed using cellulose-based methods, from economic and efficiency perspectives, there remains a need to identify other potential methods of assessing bioavailable CPC. Here, we explored whether quaternary ammonium compound (QAC) test strips are sensitive to CPC-based formulations, and if so, whether there might exist a possible correlation with glycolysis outcomes. Methods: Quantitati

Machine Learning-Based Assessment of Long-Term Groundwater Level Dynamics in the Nakhon Luang Aquifer from 1978 to 2023.

Groundwater is a critical resource supporting economic and social development in Thailand, particularly within the lower Chao Phraya Basin, where rapid urbanization and industrial expansion have led to intensive groundwater exploitation. This study applied a random forest (RF) machine learning model to investigate groundwater level (GWL) dynamics in the Nakhon Luang aquifer, which is one of the most productive aquifers due to its high yield and relatively good water quality, using long-term data from 1978 to 2023. The seven data sets include groundwater levels, groundwater pumping, rainfall, g

Antimicrobial and cushioning carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogel for strawberry quality preservation and shelf-life extension.

During storage and transportation, fruits and vegetables are prone to quality deterioration, reduced shelf life, and consequent economic losses, primarily due to the combined effects of microbial proliferation and mechanical damage. In this study, a multifunctional hydrogel cushion was developed using methacrylated carboxymethyl cellulose and κ-carrageenan as the polymeric backbone. The mechanical strength of the hydrogel network was reinforced through the synergistic coordination of quaternized cellulose nanofibers and zirconium ions. To impart antimicrobial functionality, a natural antibacte

Design, Synthesis and Antiviral Evaluation of Pyrido[1,2-c]pyrimidin-1-one Derivatives Against Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV).

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is the pathogen responsible for porcine epidemic diarrhea, causing significant economic losses to the swine industry. During the replication of PEDV, the genome mutates rapidly, making the effectiveness of commercial vaccines uncertain when facing newly emerging prevalent variants. More importantly, there are currently no safe and effective specific antiviral drugs available. YT1418, a pyrido[1,2-c]pyrimidin-1-one (PPO) compound, exhibited anti-PEDV activity in a previous study. To expand the chemical space of the PPO scaffold and clarify the influence of

Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress in Spinal Cord Injury: Pathological Roles, Molecular Targets, and Emerging Treatments: A Systematic Review.

Spinal cord injuries (SCI) are associated with significant physical and economic burdens on individuals and healthcare systems. Research has shown that several molecular and cellular interactions significantly contribute to SCI progression. The initiation and development of SCI are strongly linked to cellular stress mechanisms, notably those associated with the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), which gives rise to the unfolded protein response (UPR). This systematic review discusses the molecular pathways involved in ER stress, particularly the role of the activating transcription factor 6 (ATF6)-me

Phagocytosis of Mycobacterium fortuitum by Caprine Alveolar Macrophages Is Associated with iNOS and Pro-Inflammatory Markers Expression.

Mycobacterial diseases, including tuberculosis (TB), remain the major health and economic challenges in livestock, underscoring the need to characterise the innate immune mechanisms involved in early bacterial containment. Alveolar macrophages (AMs) are the first line of defence against inhaled mycobacteria, yet the functional links between activation, polarisation, and phagocytic capacity in caprine AMs remain poorly defined. In this study, we compared a pH-dependent live-cell fluorescence assay with a culture-based method to evaluate phagocytosis and clearance of Mycobacterium fortuitum unde

A bivalent inactivated influenza vaccine incorporating epitope-optimized surface proteins confers cross-protective immunity against H9N2 influenza virus.

The H9N2 avian influenza virus (AIV) has caused substantial economic losses to the global poultry industry and poses a zoonotic threat to humans. Vaccination constitutes a pivotal strategy for the prevention and control of H9N2 AIVs. However, the ongoing antigenic evolution of the viruses pose a persistent challenge to the protective efficacy of existing vaccines. Therefore, the development of a broadly protective H9N2 influenza vaccine capable of eliciting cross-reactive immune responses is crucial for mitigating both the disease burden and the risk of pandemics. Here, we developed a bivalent
