Seeing with profoundly deactivated mid-level visual areas: non-hierarchical functioning in the human visual cortex.

A fundamental concept in visual processing is that activity in high-order object-category distinctive regions (e.g., lateral occipital complex, fusiform face area, middle temporal+) is dependent on bottom-up flow of activity in earlier retinotopic areas (V2, V3, V4) whose main input originates from primary visual cortex (V1). Thus, activity in down stream areas should reflect lower-level inputs. Here we qualify this notion reporting case LG, a rare case of developmental object agnosia and prosopagnosia. In this person, V1 was robustly activated by visual stimuli, yet intermediate areas (V2-V4)

Beyond the sentence given.

A central and influential idea among researchers of language is that our language faculty is organized according to Fregean compositionality, which states that the meaning of an utterance is a function of the meaning of its parts and of the syntactic rules by which these parts are combined. Since the domain of syntactic rules is the sentence, the implication of this idea is that language interpretation takes place in a two-step fashion. First, the meaning of a sentence is computed. In a second step, the sentence meaning is integrated with information from prior discourse, world knowledge, info

Somatosensory evoked magnetic fields from the primary and secondary somatosensory cortices in healthy newborns.

Although brain development has been actively investigated in animals, maturation of the cerebral cortex in human newborns is still poorly understood. This study aimed at characterizing the cortical areas participating in tactile processing in human neonates. Somatosensory-evoked magnetic fields were recorded from 21 healthy full-term newborns during natural sleep. Altogether, four cortical areas were activated by tactile stimulation: the contra- and ipsilateral primary (SI) and secondary (SII) somatosensory cortices. The contralateral SI was activated first in all the newborns. This early acti

Seeing words in context: the interaction of lexical and sentence level information during reading.

The ERP experiment reported here addresses some outstanding questions regarding word processing in sentential contexts: (1) Does only the 'message-level' representation (the representation of sentence meaning combining lexico-semantic and syntactic constraints) affect the processing of the incoming word [J. Exp. Psychol.: Learn. Mem. Cogn. 20 (1994) 92]? (2) Is lexically specified semantic relatedness between multiple words the primary factor instead [J. Exp. Psychol.: Learn. Mem. Cogn. 15 (1989) 791]? (3) Alternatively, do word and sentence level information interact during sentence comprehen

Report order and identification of multidimensional stimuli: a study of event-related brain potentials.

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of order of report on multidimensional stimulus identification. Subjects were required to identify each two-dimensional symbol by pushing corresponding buttons on the keypad on which there were two columns representing the two dimensions. Order of report was manipulated for the dimension represented by the left or right column. Both behavioral data and event-related potentials were recorded from 14 college students. Behavioral data analysis showed that order of report had a significant effect on response times. Such results were consistent

Utility of area curve ratio electrocochleography in early Meniere disease.

BACKGROUND: Electrocochleography (ECochG) is useful in supporting the diagnosis of Meniere disease (MD). Possible MD (early disease as defined by the 1995 American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Committee on Hearing and Equilibrium) is a readily treatable form of MD. OBJECTIVES: To identify whether ECochG summating potential/action potential (SP/AP) area curve measures are more sensitive than conventional SP/AP amplitude ratios in detecting possible MD. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review of a 3-year period (1997-2000) was conducted. All charts of patients dia

Memory for perceived and imagined pictures--an event-related potential study.

Event-related potentials (ERPs) and behavioural measures were used to investigate recognition memory and source-monitoring judgements about previously perceived and imagined pictures. At study, word labels of common objects were presented. Half of these were followed by a corresponding picture and the other half by an empty frame, signalling to the participants to mentally visualise an image. At test, participants in a source-monitoring task made a three-way discrimination between new words and words corresponding to previously perceived and imagined pictures. Participants in an old/new-recogn

Theta band power changes in normal and dyslexic children.

OBJECTIVE: Tonic and phasic (event-related) theta band power changes were analyzed in a sample of 8 dyslexic and 8 control children. Previous research with healthy subjects suggests that electroencephalograph (EEG) theta activity reflects the encoding of new information into working memory. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the processing deficits of dyslexics are related to a reduced phasic theta response during reading. METHOD: The EEG was recorded while subjects were reading numbers, words and pseudowords and analyzed in a lower and upper theta band (4--8 Hz). A phasi

[Research of experimental fistula stimuli vestibule evoked response].

OBJECTIVE: To investiqate a way of stimulation for experimental vestibul evoked response. The artificial fistula of right upper semicircular canal was made in 12 guineapig. METHOD: Using a fistula stimuli probe device designed specially. RESULT: We obtain a potential consisting of 3-4 positive waveforms. We called it the fistula stimuli vestibule evoked response (FsVeR). They had a coincide character. The response disappeared when the animal died. The cervical spinal section, orbital removal and facial nerve removal had little effects to FsVeR. When severe inner ear damage produced by Gentam

Electromyographic analysis of the superior belly of the omohyoid muscle and anterior belly of the digastric muscle in tongue and head movements.

The participation of the superior belly of the omohyoid muscle and anterior belly of the digastric muscle in tongue and head movements was studied eletromyographically in 20 normal young volunteers. A pair of monopolar electrodes was used in each muscle for simultaneous recording of their actions. The muscles act in the following tongue movements: protrusion, right and left lateral movements, placement of the tip of the tongue on soft and hard palates and on the floor of the mouth. The strongest levels of activity of the superior belly of the omohyoid muscle were observed in the placement of t

[Effects of white noise exposure on nonlinearities of outer hair cell].

The technique of microelectrode has been used to record receptor potentials of outer hair cell (OHC) of seven guinea pigs' cochlea basing on the programmable signal processing system. The nonlinearies of input-output function of the receptor potential recorded from OHC are compared before and after with noise exposure. Results indicated that the input-output functions of the receptor potential of OHC reveal linear behavior increased in linearity in low level and turned to be nonlinear when the sound level increased to 50 dB SPL, and significant saturation was seen in 80 dB SPL. After the white

A dual-task analysis of resource allocation in dysthymia and anhedonia.

Research has shown dysthymic individuals to be hyporesponsive at various stages of information processing, yet it is not clear whether dysthymics are deficient in the amount of available attentional resources for information processing or, instead, in the allocation of those resources. To distinguish between these possibilities, the authors compared dysthymics to anhedonic and normal control Ss during the performance of memory tasks, under conditions of varying task priority and difficulty. Although there were no performance differences, dysthymics and anhedonics exhibited a consistently small

Recording auditory brainstem responses from infants.

Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) can be reliably recorded from infants in the first few months of life. Since they are normally recognizable down to intensities that are 30 dB above normal hearing thresholds, ABRs elicited by clicks are useful in screening for hearing-impairment in infancy. The ABRs can also provide further diagnostic information about the hearing losses that are detected by screening: the threshold for the response represents a reasonable estimate of the severity of the hearing loss; bone-conduction studies can assess the extent of a conductive loss; and frequency-specific

"Isolated" postinfectious myoclonus.

Two cases are reported who developed myoclonus as the only manifestation of a post-infectious syndrome without evidence of encephalitis or the opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome. Case 1 had generalised myoclonus following an influenza-like illness, while case 2 had right upper limb segmental myoclonus following uncomplicated chicken pox. Neither had any localising neurological signs or abnormality on investigation. Both recovered completely within six months of the onset. Similar cases are reviewed from the literature and it is suggested that such cases be called "isolated" post-infectious myoclonu

[Normative parameter characterization for the auditory brainstem response of the normal newborn].

The auditory brainstem response generated by clicks was studied in 119 normal newborns. One ear was studied in detail at 20, 40 and 60 dBnHL, the other at 20 and 30 dBnHL, increasing the intensity if no response was found. The latency for waves I, III and V in the detailed studied ear was 2.7 +/- .39, 5.4 +/- .44 and 7.7 +/- .48, respectively. 85% of newborns had thresholds for auditory brainstem response less than 40 dBnHL, 54% less than 20 dBnHL and 15% between 40 and 60 dBnHL. These findings are compatible with conductive loss in the higher threshold group and support data from Stockard, re
