The bone morphogenetic protein 2 analogue L51P enhances spinal fusion in combination with BMP2 in an in vivo rat tail model.

Bone morphogenic protein 2 (BMP2) is known to induce osteogenesis and is applied clinically to enhance spinal fusion despite adverse effects. BMP2 needs to be used in high doses to be effective due to the presence of BMP2 inhibitors. L51P is a BMP2 analogue that acts by inhibition of BMP2 inhibitors. Here, we hypothesized that mixtures of BMP2 and L51P could achieve better spinal fusion outcomes regarding ossification. To test whether mixtures of both cytokines are sufficient to improve ossification, 45 elderly Wistar rats (of which 21 were males) were assigned to seven experimental groups, al

Life over limb: Arterial access-related limb ischemic complications in 48-hour REBOA survivors.

BACKGROUND: Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) is increasingly used in some trauma settings. Arterial access-related limb ischemic complications (ARLICs) resulting from the femoral arterial access required for REBOA are largely under reported. We sought to describe the incidence of these complications and the clinical, technical, and device factors associated with their development. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of records of adult trauma patients from the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma Aortic Occlusion for Resuscitation in Traum

Acromioclavicular joint instability on cross-body adduction view: the biomechanical effect of acromioclavicular and coracoclavicular ligaments sectioning.

BACKGROUND: The acromioclavicular (AC) and coracoclavicular (CC) ligaments are important stabilizers of the AC joint. We hypothesized that AC and trapezoid ligament injuries induce AC joint instability and that the clavicle can override the acromion on cross-body adduction view even in the absence of conoid ligament injury. Accordingly, we investigated how sectioning the AC and CC ligaments contribute to AC joint instability in the cross-body adduction position. METHODS: Six fresh-frozen cadaveric shoulders were used in this study, comprising five male and one female specimen, with a mean age

Assessing the appropriateness of blood transfusion among injured patients at a Ghanaian tertiary hospital: Time for clarity on the use of a scarce resource.

INTRODUCTION: Hemorrhage is an important cause of preventable injury-related death. Many low- and middle-income country (LMIC) patients do not have timely access to safe blood. We sought to determine the degree of appropriateness of blood transfusion among patients with injuries requiring surgical intervention at presentation to a tertiary hospital in Ghana. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of such patients presenting to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), from January 2015 to December 2016. Patients' hemoglobin levels at presentation were determined as the first record of hemo

STRYDE versus PRECICE magnetic internal lengthening nail for femur lengthening.

INTRODUCTION: Magnetic internal lengthening nails (MILNs) have been used for femoral lengthening to avoid complications associated with external fixation. The titanium version of the MILN (PRECICE®) has been in use since 2011 but had limitations (50-75 lb) in post-operative weight bearing. A new stainless-steel version of the MILN (STRYDE®) allows 150-250 lb of post-operative weight bearing. The aim is to compare the outcomes of using these two different MILNs for both unilateral and bilateral femoral lengthening. METHODS: A single-center, retrospective cohort study was conducted in which pat

Pre-injury activity predicts outcomes following distal radius fractures in patients age 60 and older.

INTRODUCTION: One out of every 5 elderly patients will suffer a distal radius fracture and these injuries are often related to poor bone health. Several surgical subspecialties have demonstrated that pre-injury activity level can impact patient outcomes. To determine the importance of physical activity, we examined the relationship between pre-injury activity and patient-reported and functional outcomes among fracture patients. METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data from participants enrolled in the Wrist and Radius Injury Surgical Trial (WRIST) from April 1

Evaluation of breeding strategies for polledness in dairy cattle using a newly developed simulation framework for quantitative and Mendelian traits.

BACKGROUND: Intensified selection of polled individuals has recently gained importance in predominantly horned dairy cattle breeds as an alternative to routine dehorning. The status quo of the current polled breeding pool of genetically-closely related artificial insemination sires with lower breeding values for performance traits raises questions regarding the effects of intensified selection based on this founder pool. METHODS: We developed a stochastic simulation framework that combines the stochastic simulation software QMSim and a self-designed R program named QUALsim that acts as an ext
