Influence of a walking program on the metabolic risk profile of obese postmenopausal women.

OBJECTIVE: Menopause transition is associated with an increased prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS), which may partly explain the higher coronary heart disease risk. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of a 16-week walking program on the metabolic risk profile of women 50 to 65 years old whose body mass index ranged from 29 to 35 kg/m. METHODS: A total of 153 postmenopausal women were subjected to three sessions per week of 45-minutes of walking at 60% of their heart rate reserve. At baseline, 46 and 84 women were characterized by one and two or more determinants of MS, respecti

Early life factors and incidence of proliferative benign breast disease.

Proliferative benign breast disease is a marker of increased breast cancer risk, yet little is known about its etiology. Most studies of benign breast disease have focused only on risk factors in adulthood, despite growing evidence that factors in early life influence breast cancer risk. We explored the relations of several early life factors with incidence of proliferative benign breast disease among 71,896 premenopausal women in the Nurses' Health Study II who recalled their body fatness at young ages, physical activity in adolescence, birthweight, and history of being breastfed. Between 199

Role of the physician in childhood obesity.

OBJECTIVE: To suggest the role of the practicing physician in examining and treating childhood obesity. How should obesity be determined at clinical examination? Is there an obesity epidemic? What is the likely influence of obesity upon current and future health? What are the causes of obesity, and what does this imply for prevention and treatment? DATA SOURCES: Relevant articles in Medline and personal files. DATA SYNTHESIS: The 80th and 95th percentiles of body mass index and skinfold readings provide the most commonly accepted indices of overweight and obesity in the child. Over the last

Examining the relationship between anthropometric and body composition measures with coronary heart disease events: the multi-ethnic study of atherosclerosis.

AIMS: Obesity, traditionally measured using body mass index (BMI), is considered a significant risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, there have been mixed findings regarding the association between obesity and cardiovascular events in part due to the way it is measured. Major limitations exist with the use of BMI as it cannot assess body composition or fat distribution, and thus fails to account for the separate roles of muscle and fat mass (FM). The objective is to examine the relationship between various measures of body composition including FM, fat-free

Body Composition and Senescence: Impact of Polyphenols on Aging-Associated Events.

Aging is a dynamic and progressive process characterized by the gradual accumulation of cellular damage. The continuous functional decline in the intrinsic capacity of living organisms to precisely regulate homeostasis leads to an increased susceptibility and vulnerability to diseases. Among the factors contributing to these changes, body composition-comprised of fat mass and lean mass deposits-plays a crucial role in the trajectory of a disability. Particularly, visceral and intermuscular fat deposits increase with aging and are associated with adverse health outcomes, having been linked to t

Obesity and Cardiovascular Risk: Systematic Intervention Is the Key for Prevention.

Obesity is a serious public health issue and associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease events and mortality. The risk of cardiovascular complications is directly related to excess body fat mass and ectopic fat deposition, but also other obesity-related complications such as pre-type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnoea, and non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases. Body mass index and waist circumference are used to classify a patient as overweight or obese and to stratify cardiovascular risk. Physical activity and diet, despite being key points in preventing adverse events and red

Using relative handgrip strength to identify children at risk of sarcopenic obesity.

Background: identifying children at risk of developing childhood sarcopenic obesity often requires specialized equipment and expensive testing procedures, so cheaper and quicker methods would be advantageous, especially in field-based settings. Objective: the purpose of this study was to determine the relationships between the muscle-to-fat ratio (MFR) and relative handgrip strength, and to determine the ability of handgrip strength relative to body mass index (grip-to-BMI) to identify children who are at risk of developing sarcopenic obesity. Material and method: grip-to-BMI was measured in 4

Australian bat lyssavirus infection in two horses.

In May 2013, the first cases of Australian bat lyssavirus infections in domestic animals were identified in Australia. Two horses (filly-H1 and gelding-H2) were infected with the Yellow-bellied sheathtail bat (YBST) variant of Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV). The horses presented with neurological signs, pyrexia and progressing ataxia. Intra-cytoplasmic inclusion bodies (Negri bodies) were detected in some Purkinje neurons in haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stained sections from the brain of one of the two infected horses (H2) by histological examination. A morphological diagnosis of sub-acute m

Predicting changes in eating disorder symptoms among Chinese adolescents: a 9-month prospective study.

OBJECTIVES: Body image and eating disturbances have become global phenomena, yet prospective designs have rarely been employed in research on non-Western samples. This study tested the extent to which select features of the dual-pathway account of bulimic disturbances contributed to changes in eating disorder symptoms reported among adolescents from China. METHODS: A sample of 593 Chinese middle school and high school students (217 boys, 376 girls) completed measures of eating disorder symptoms, body image concerns, internalized physical appearance ideals, negative affect, and appearance-base

Effects of exercise on chromium levels. Is supplementation required?

It is estimated that most individuals are not ingesting sufficient amounts of chromium in their diets. Although there is little information on chromium intake in athletes, many athletes ingest more calories than do non-athletes so their chromium intake should be adequate. However, athletes who restrict calories to maintain low bodyweights could compromise their chromium status. Some evidence also shows that exercise may increase chromium loss into the urine. At present, it is not known whether this loss necessitates additional chromium in the diet or whether the body will increase retention in

[Diagnosis and treatment of primary and secondary lymphedema].

Chronic edema is caused by lymphatic impairment due to either overload of interstitial fluid or anatomic/functional lymphatic failure in any part of the body. Lymphatics play a crucial role in interstitial homeostasis, immune surveillance and fat absorption in the gut. Lymphedema is a clinical sign with swelling and not a diagnosis. In the latter stages inflammatory processes lead to fat formation and fibrosis. Untreated lymphedema has an increased risk for erysipelas, physical dysfunction and tends to worsen. Obesity and reduced physical activity are the main influenceable risk factors after

Intestinal Lymphangiectasia Associated With Refractory Ascites in a Cirrhosis Patient.

Lymphatic systems play a very important role in the body fluid homeostasis by interstitial fluid reabsorption. Lymphatic dysfunctions are common in patients with advanced cirrhosis, contributing to ascites and lymphedema. An unusual manifestation of lymphatic dysfunction in patients with cirrhosis is intestinal lymphangiectasia. A sustained rise in lymphatic pressure secondary to portal hypertension often contributes to the rupture of intestinal lymphangiectasia, resulting in the loss of plasma proteins, lymphocytes and lipids via the release of lymph into the intestinal lumen. Therefore, in a

Tumor-secreted proliferin-1 regulates adipogenesis and lipolysis in cachexia.

Cancer-associated cachexia (CAC) is a common syndrome in cancer patients and is characterized by loss of body weight accompanied by the atrophy of fat and skeletal muscle. Metabolic changes are a critical factor in CAC; however, the mechanisms through which tumors inhibit adipogenesis and promote lipolysis are poorly understood. To clarify these mechanisms, we investigated adipogenesis-limiting factors released by tumors in a cell culture system. We identified proliferin-1 (PLF-1), a member of the growth hormone/prolactin gene family, as a key factor secreted from certain tumors that inhibited

[Treatment with neurostimulation and ketogenic diet for people with medically refractory epilepsy].

For some people with medically refractory epilepsy adjunct treatment with neurostimulation and ketogenic diet can be an option. Vagal nerve stimulation, VNS, consists of chronic intermittent electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve. VNS is effective and well tolerated in adolescents and adults. There is insufficient evidence on the efficacy of deep brain stimulation, DBS, and brain-responsive neurostimulation, RNS. Ketogenic diet is an established treatment in epilepsy with an increased number of indications, especially in neurometabolic diseases, where dietary therapy can completely eliminat

Microwave reflectometry for noninvasive imaging of skin abnormalities.

In this paper, a microwave microscope is presented for characterization of skin abnormalities. A coplanar waveguide probe is designed and fabricated for high-resolution near-field imaging of the biological samples. Several simulations and measurement studies are described to present the capability of the proposed probe in identification of different tissues and the detection of fat masses at different depths. In addition, two methods are used to eliminate the measurement noise which is caused by non-targeted tissues. Then, the contours around the masses are obtained applying an edge detection

The Heterogeneity of Obesity: Fitting Treatments To Individuals - Republished Article.

Body weight is regulated by a complex interaction of biological, behavioral, and cultural factors. The population as a whole is at risk for obesity because of increased intake of dietary fat, the consumption of calories in fewer meals per day, striking accessibility to palatable foods, and decreased physical activity. This risk may become a reality in individuals with certain biological predispositions (genetic tendency, low metabolic rate, increased fat cell number), specific eating patterns, and susceptibility to the extreme cultural pressure to be lean. These factors must be considered in e

Food intolerance, diet composition, and eating patterns in functional dyspepsia patients.

The aims of this study are to investigate dietary factors, food intolerance, and the body mass index data, as an indicator of nutritional status, in functional dyspepsia patients. Forty-one functional dyspepsia patients and 30 healthy volunteers answered a standardized questionnaire to identify eating habits and food intolerance, and then completed a 7-day alimentary diary. There was no significant difference in daily total caloric intake between patients and controls. Patients associated their symptoms with the ingestion of several foods, but in general maintained their regular intake, with t

Vascular soft tissue tumors: medical imaging.

Histologically, tumors of the vascular system are divided into three categories. Benign types can be localized (hemangioma) or involve large segments of the body (angiomatosis). Vascular tumors of intermediate malignancy are known as hemangioendotheliomas. Angiosarcoma is one of the rarest malignant soft tissue neoplasms. The authors present the morphological and SI features of 17 histologically proven vascular tumors (16 benign, 1 malignant) examined by MRI. The results are compared with the findings on other imaging techniques. On T1-WI, the tumors are slightly hyperintense to muscle with in
