Effect of voluntary repetitive long-lasting muscle contraction activity on the BOLD signal as assessed by optimal hemodynamic response function.

OBJECTIVE: Among other neuroimaging techniques, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can be useful for studying the development of motor fatigue. The aim of this study was to identify differences in cortical neuronal activation in nine subjects on three motor tasks: right-hand movement with minimum, maximum, and post-fatigue maximum finger flexion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: fMRI activation maps for each subject and during each condition were obtained by estimating the optimal model of the hemodynamic response function (HRF) out of four standard HRF models and an individual-based HRF mode…

Respiratory muscle fibres: specialisation and plasticity.

Skeletal muscles are composed of fibres of different types, each type being identified by the isoform of myosin heavy chain which is expressed as slow 1, fast 2A, fast 2X, and fast 2B. Slow fibres are resistant to fatigue due to their highly oxidative metabolism whereas 2X and 2B fibres are easily fatiguable and fast 2A fibres exhibit intermediate fatigue resistance. Slow fibres and fast fibres are present in equal proportions in the adult human diaphragm while intercostal muscles contain a higher proportion of fast fibres. A small fibre size, abundance of capillaries, and a high aerobic oxida…

Biomechanical Analysis of Repetitive Lifting with Passive Exosuit Assistance: Preliminary Results.

Repetitive lifting tasks, common in labor-intensive industries, are a significant contributor to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) and chronic lower back pain (LBP). The continuous physical strain associated with these tasks leads to the accumulation of fatigue, which can reduce performance and increase the risk of injury over time. This study evaluates the impact of passive back exosuit assistance on muscle activation and fatigue during repetitive lifting tasks. Surface electromyography (sEMG) and biomechanical assessments were conducted to analyze kinematics and key muscle group…

Sleep Deficiency: A Symptoms Perspective: Exemplars from Chronic Heart Failure, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, and Breast Cancer.

Sleep deficiency is associated with disabling daytime symptoms, including excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and fatigue. The purpose of this article is to discuss the contributions of sleep deficiency and sleep disorders to fatigue and EDS among people with chronic conditions. We use exemplars from the literature on chronic heart failure, inflammatory bowel disease, and breast cancer to (1) describe the prevalence of fatigue and EDS and their consequences; (2) examine the evidence for the contributions of sleep deficiency and sleep disorders to these symptoms; and (3) recommend implications f…

Bilateral Tibial Stress Fractures and Osteoporosis in a Young Patient.

Stress fractures result from microscopic bone injury due to repetitive submaximal stress and include fatigue and insufficiency fracture components. Fatigue fractures generally occur in runners and athletes and are caused by abnormal physical load on the bone. On the other hand, insufficiency fractures are generally seen in the elderly secondary to osteoporosis, typically involving the pelvis and surrounding bones. Insufficiency fracture occurs as a result of normal loading in the abnormal bone. In this case report, we describe a young patient with bilateral tibial stress fractures with both fa…

Illness Attitudes Associated with Seasonal Depressive Symptoms: An Examination Using a Newly Developed Implicit Measure.

The Dual Vulnerability Model of seasonal depression posits that seasonal vegetative symptoms are due to a physiological vulnerability, but cognitive and mood symptoms are the result of negative appraisal of vegetative changes. In addition, rumination may be associated with stronger negative attitudes toward vegetative symptoms. This is the first study to examine implicit attitudes toward vegetative symptoms. We hypothesized that illness attitudes about fatigue moderate the relationship between the severity of vegetative symptoms and the severity of cognitive symptoms and that the illness attit…

Biomechanical adjustments during an exhaustive treadmill run: comparison of compression tights and running shorts.

Fatigue induces changes to running form resulting in movements that are less efficient. Reducing the amount of fatigue and its subsequent effect on form is valuable for improving running performance. It is unknown what effects compressive clothing has on musculature; however, there have been claims that it may reduce fatigue. The aim of this study was to determine whether compressive tights or running shorts are more beneficial for improving performance when running to exhaustion. Eleven runners ran at their current five-kilometre race pace on a treadmill to voluntary exhaustion in a repeated …

Respiratory Inductance Plethysmography to Assess Fatigability during Repetitive Work.

Cumulative fatigue during repetitive work is associated with occupational risk and productivity reduction. Usually, subjective measures or muscle activity are used for a cumulative evaluation; however, Industry 4.0 wearables allow overcoming the challenges observed in those methods. Thus, the aim of this study is to analyze alterations in respiratory inductance plethysmography (RIP) to measure the asynchrony between thorax and abdomen walls during repetitive work and its relationship with local fatigue. A total of 22 healthy participants (age: 27.0 ± 8.3 yrs; height: 1.72 ± 0.09 m; mass: 63.4 …

Efficacy of the topical nasal steroid budesonide on improving sleep and daytime somnolence in patients with perennial allergic rhinitis.

BACKGROUND: Improving quality of life is considered to be a major endpoint and motivation for clinical intervention in patients with perennial allergic rhinitis (PAR). In addition to classical symptoms of congestion, pruritus, and rhinorrhea, patients will often complain of not being able to sleep well at night and of feeling fatigued during the day. Like sleep apnea, PAR has also been shown to cause sleep disturbance and consequently worsen daytime fatigue and somnolence. HYPOTHESIS: It is proposed that by decreasing nasal obstruction due to allergic rhinitis by treating with the topical ste…

DNA Methylation Signatures of Functional Somatic Syndromes: Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Functional somatic syndromes (FSS) are highly prevalent across all levels of health care. The fact that they are characterized by medically unexplained symptoms, such as fatigue and pain, raises the important question of their underlying pathophysiology. Psychosocial stress represents a significant factor in the development of FSS and can induce long-term modifications at the epigenetic level. The aim of this review was to systematically review, for the first time, whether individuals with FSS are characterized by specific alterations in DNA methylation. METHODS: MEDLINE and PsycIN…
