EEG Emotion Recognition Applied to the Effect Analysis of Music on Emotion Changes in Psychological Healthcare.

Music therapy is increasingly being used to promote physical health. Emotion semantic recognition is more objective and provides direct awar … ives based on the two models, and the results showed that the joy type of music video could improve fear, disgust, mania, and trust emotions into surprise or intimacy emotions, while the sad type of music video could reduce intimacy to the fear emotion.

Toxoplasma gondii Infection Causes an Atypical Abundance of Oxytocin and Its Receptor in the Female Rat Brain.

Infection with the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii causes loss of innate fear of cat odors in both male and female rats. This behavioral change is presumed to reflect a parasitic manipulation that increases transmission of the parasite from its intermediate to definitive host. The host behavioral change in male rats is dependent on gonadal steroids. In contrast, the loss of fear in female rats is not accompanied by greater gonadal steroids and cannot be rescued by gonadectomy. This disparity suggests that proximate mechanisms of the post infection host behavioral change in rats are sexually dimorp…

Psychosocial Effects of Isolation on Nipah Virus Infection Suspects during an Outbreak.

BACKGROUND AND METHODOLOGY: Nipah Virus (NiV) belonging to the genus Henipavirus is a biosafety level 4 pathogen with high human to human transmission. Nipah Virus outbreak of 2018 in Kozhikode, Kerala has evoked immense panic and fear in the system. Other viral infections with similar transmission pattern (Ebola, SARS, MERS or COVID 19) also identified with the negative impacts of isolation. This retrospective observational study was planned during November -December 2018 to understand the psychosocial effects among the subjects in Nipah isolation facility. The symptoms of Post-traumatic stre…

Sleep disorder symptoms and massed delivery of prolonged exposure for posttraumatic stress disorder: Nodding off but not missing out.

OBJECTIVE: The impact of disrupted sleep on the effectiveness of prolonged exposure (PE) therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is not well understood. Researchers have suggested that comorbid sleep disorders contribute to nonresponse by impairing therapeutic mechanisms such as emotional processing of trauma memories and extinction in cued fear conditioning. Several studies indicate daytime sleepiness, insomnia, and nightmares are correlated with PTSD symptom severity. However, a recent randomized controlled trial found that these sleep disorder symptoms did not affect PTSD symptom c…

How is type D personality associated with the major psychological outcomes in noncardiac chest pain patients?

Noncardiac chest pain (NCCP) may lead many problems on the health-care system. Having type D personality has been shown to adversely affect NCCP patients. This study aimed to determine the psychological comorbidities that type D personality is associated with, in patients with NCCP. The participants of this cross-sectional study were 360 patients diagnosed with NCCP. Patients filled out questionnaires about sociodemographic, behavioral, and clinical factors (severity of pain, somatization, cardiac anxiety, fear of body sensations, depression, and type D personality). Type D personality was mor…

Take my breath away: Neural activation at breath-hold differentiates individuals with panic disorder from healthy controls.

There is neuroanatomical evidence of an "extended fear Сеть" of brain structures involved in the etiology of panic disorder (PD). Although ventilatory distrubance is a primary symptom of PD these sensations may also trigger onset of a panic attack (PA). Here, a voluntary breath-holding paradigm was used to mimic the hypercapnia state in order to compare blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) response, at the peak of a series of 18 s breath-holds, of 21 individuals with PD to 21 low anxiety matched controls. Compared to the rest condition, BOLD activity at the peak (12 - 18 s) of the breath-hol…

Intimate Partner Violence, Human Rights Violations, and HIV among Women in Nairobi, Kenya.

This study presents qualitative results from a mixed-method investigation conducted between May and August 2012 into the prevalence and cons … and made them leery of disclosing their positive status or seeking support from a male partner for fear of a violent reaction. This fear and the socio-structural conditions in Kenya limit their ability to actively pursue comprehensive care, the stress of which can exacerbate symptoms and make managing the disease more difficult.

Pepys's plague: How the reaction of the individual, society and the medical profession to the Great Plague of 1665 is similar to our experience of Covid-19.

Introduction: The celebrated diarist Samuel Pepys kept a detailed diary of exceptional candour throughout the years of The Great Plague of 1 … n London but critical of the majority who flee the city. Pepys's own reactions, which progress from fear of contracting the disease to fear for his business interests, mirror today's reaction to The 2020 Coronavirus Epidemic.

Intrinsic functional connectivity in social anxiety disorder with and without comorbid attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Neuroimaging research about social anxiety disorder (SAD) points to hyperactivity in the fear circuit and altered connectivity between the fear circuit and the intrinsic connectivity networks that modulate it. We investigated intrinsic functional connectivity changes in SAD patients by taking into consideration the commonly overlooked comorbidity of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We compared intrinsic functional connectivity alterations in 16 patients with pure SAD, 18 patients with SAD and comorbid ADHD and 21 healthy controls using seed-to-voxel functional connectivity anal…

A Systematic Review of Barriers and Facilitators for Concussion Reporting Behavior Among Student Athletes.

Despite increasing attention to concussion safety, many young athletes still do not report concussion-like symptoms to athletic staff. This … s met inclusion criteria. Major facilitators were female sex and younger age. Major barriers were a fear of losing current or future playing time, a misconception that concussive injury is not serious, a fear of letting one's team down, and a lack of knowledge of concussion signs and symptoms. Future interventions should address these issues, incorpora …

Expression and Function of Neuron-Glia-Related Cell Adhesion Molecule (NrCAM) in the Amygdalar Pathway.

Neuron-Glia related cell adhesion molecule (NrCAM) is a candidate autism risk factor that promotes axon guidance through cytoskeletal linkag … ity to the ST. Behavioral testing indicated that NrCAM null mice were impaired in context-dependent fear conditioning, in accord with altered amygdala-BNST connectivity, but displayed normal cued (tone-shock) conditioning. Results are consistent with the novel finding that NrCAM mediates fasciculation of axon fibers in the ST important for proper amygd …

Smaller volumes in the lateral and basal nuclei of the amygdala in patients with panic disorder.

The amygdala plays an important functional role in fear and anxiety. Abnormalities in the amygdala are believed to be involved in the neurobiological basis of panic disorder (PD). Previous structural neuroimaging studies have found global volumetric and morphological abnormalities in the amygdala in patients with PD. Very few studies, however, have explored for structural abnormalities in various amygdala sub-regions, which consist of various sub-nuclei, each with different functions. This study aimed to evaluate for volumetric abnormalities in the amygdala sub-nuclei, in order to provide a be…

Psychophysiological and self-reported responses in individuals with methamphetamine use disorder exposed to emotional video stimuli.

Individuals with methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) exhibit irritability and compulsive emotional responses, yet the relevant study is scarce. The characteristic of their positive and negative emotional responses can provide effective targets for the clinical intervention. In this study, we compared the emotional responses of 60 participants with MUD and 30 healthy participants to visual stimuli. They watched four types of video to elicit anger, fear, amusement, and joy emotional responses. The self-report of emotional responses (i.e., arousal, valence, and proximity), skin conductance level, …

Plasticity of Functional MAOA Gene Methylation in Acrophobia.

Epigenetic mechanisms have been proposed to mediate fear extinction in animal models. Here, MAOA methylation was analyzed via direct sequencing of sodium bisulfite-treated DNA extracted from blood cells before and after a 2-week exposure therapy in a sample of n = 28 female patients with acrophobia as well as in n = 28 matched healthy female controls. Clinical response was measured using the Acrophobia Questionnaire and the Attitude Towards Heights Questionnaire. The functional relevance of altered MAOA methylation was investigated by luciferase-based reporter gene assays. MAOA methylation was…

Regulatory control and impulsivity relate to resting frontal activity.

Gray's Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST) asserts three core personality systems: the behavioral approach system (BAS), the fight-flight … rontal asymmetric activity with personality traits associated with approach (BAS), withdrawal (FFFS-Fear), behavioral inhibition (BIS-Anxiety) and impulsivity (UPPS-P). Resting frontal cortical activity was recorded using electroencephalography (EEG), and the traditional alpha band was examined. Greater BIS-Anxiety related to greater relative right fro …

Vaginal Atrophy in Breast Cancer Survivors: Attitude and Approaches Among Oncologists.

BACKGROUND: Vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA) is a relevant problem for breast cancer survivors (BCSs), in particular for those who receive aromata … by most oncologists (71%). The main reason not to prescribe vaginal estrogen therapy in BCSs is the fear of increased cancer recurrence, the possible interference with tamoxifen, or AIs and the fear of medical litigation. CONCLUSION: VVA is a relevant problem for BCSs. Great effort should be done to correctly inform health care providers about VVA pro …

Zika virus and pregnant women: A psychological approach.

Zika virus presents risk of physical harm to pregnant women, but the fear of infection is also affecting women around the world. There is a gap in the research on Zika virus in the areas involving the impact on the psychosocial well-being of pregnant women. Therefore, this study is aimed at the investigation of the psychosocial adjustment of pregnant women to the risks of Zika virus infection during pregnancy. We investigated 14 pregnant women who were classified in three different groups: six in the first trimester, five in the second trimester and three in the third trimester, aged from 28 t…
