Imported yellow fever in a United States citizen.

The last imported case of yellow fever seen in this country was in 1924. We report a case of yellow fever acquired by an American tourist who visited the jungles of Brazil along the Rio Negro and Amazon Rivers. The patient died 6 days after hospital admission and 10 days after his first symptoms appeared. Yellow fever virus was recovered from clinical specimens, and the isolate was genetically similar to the E genotype IIB of South American yellow fever viruses. [Development and study of immunoglobulins against Lassa fever].

The authors validate the use of horses as producers of immune antiserum to Lassa virus. Specific immunoglobulin with at least 1:512 titer of virus neutralizing antibodies to Lassa virus was obtained from the serum of immunized horses by Kohn's alcohol method. The resultant preparation does not differ from the heterologous commercial immunoglobulins. Preclinical studies of immunoglobulin against Lassa virus demonstrated its safety and high specific activity. The strategy of treating with the immunoglobulin alone and in combination with virasol has been experimentally validated.

Treatment of Rocky Mountain spotted fever in children.

RMSF is a potentially life-threatening disease that requires prompt diagnosis and empiric initiation of an appropriate antimicrobial agent. For the clinician treating young children with RMSF, there are few options. The safety and efficacy of fluoroquinolones and orally administered parenteral chloramphenicol have not been established in the pediatric population. Coxiella burnetii appears to be endemic in animals in the Mauricie region of Quebec, and causes some human cases of Q fever annually. Unlike in other rural areas, patients in this study experienced few respiratory symptoms. [Interferon efficacy in treating patients with Astrakhan fever].

Astrakhan fever is a new endemic rickettsiosis belonging to the group of tick-borne spotted fevers. Adjuvant use of interferons in basic treatment of Astrakhan fever elevates its efficacy. The maximal contribution of interferons can be reached at administration of alpha-2 and gamma-interferons in daily doses 15,000-25,000 and 1500-2500 IU/kg, respectively. The response is higher at early administration of the medication. Interferons induce side effects early in the course: intensification of hyperthermia and pains.

Genetic variation in Australian spotted fever group rickettsiae.

Rickettsiae were isolated by cell culture of buffy coat blood from six patients with spotted fever from southeastern Australia and Flinders Island in Bass Strait. The isolates were genetically compared with two previous Rickettsia australis patient isolates. The genus-specific 17-kDA genes from the isolates were compared after DNA amplification and restriction fragment analysis of the amplified DNA. Mediterranean spotted fever: a preliminary tick field study.

We studied the prevalence of rickettsialike organisms infection in different tick species (3154 adults) collected in several areas of the Ebro valley (Spain). The Gimenez stain showed a prevalence of rickettsia-like organisms in 38.6% of the studied ticks. Using the immunofluorescence assay, only two species, Rhipicephalus sanguineus (16.4%) and R. pusillus (19.9%) have shown organisms compatible with spotted fever group rickettsiae.

Acute aphasia complicating typhoid fever in an adult.

Motor aphasia complicating bacteriologically confirmed typhoid fever in a 20-year-old adult female is presented. Neither the cause of death nor the aetiology of this isolated neurological deficit could be determined from detailed post-mortem examination. An immune related mechanism is suggested based on the temporal characteristics of this complication and CSF abnormalities.
