FDG-PET/CT in staging of clear cell odontogenic carcinoma.

Clear cell odontogenic carcinoma (CCOC) is a rare neoplasm; only 75 cases have been reported in the English language literature. They have a tendency for recurrence and a capacity to metastasize. There is very little known regarding the metabolic features of this tumour or the utility of fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) scans in the staging and follow-up of these tumours. We present two cases of CCOC with their relevant FDG-PET/CT scan findings. The first patient had primary CCOC of the mandible that was FDG-avid, and the other had recurrence of

IgG4-related tubulointerstitial nephritis accompanied with cystic formation.

BACKGROUND: An immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related disease is important disease in differential diagnosis of tumors in kidney, pancreas, lung and other organs. The imaging findings of IgG4-related kidney diseases are usually expressed as defect contrast region, while cystic formation in kidney is extremely rare. Here, we report a case of IgG4-related tubulointerstitial nephritis with renal cystic change caused by the narrowing or obstruction of collecting duct in renal medulla. CASE PRESENTATION: Abdominal contrasted CT scan showed a 31 × 24 mm cystic tumor at the upper pole of the right kidney

Multiparametric evaluation of breast lesions using PET-MRI: initial results and future perspectives.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of multiparametric evaluation of breast lesions combining information of dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI), diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), and F-fluoro-deoxi-glucose (F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET-CT). After approval of the institutional research ethics committee, 31 patients with suspicious breast lesions on MRI performed F-FDG PET-CT with a specific protocol for breast evaluation. Patients' mean age was 47.8 years (range, 29-77 years). Positron emission tomography

A rare case of hemangiomatosis of the spleen and intrapancreatic accessory spleen.

We presented a very rare case of hemangiomatosis of the spleen and intrapancreatic accessory spleen in the tail of the pancreas. A previously healthy 45-year-old woman felt left back pain and received CT scan. Multiple splenic masses and a pancreatic mass in the tail were detected. Both the lesions presented gradual and weak enhancement and pooling of the contrast medium until very late phase on dynamic MRI. Since the lesions in the spleen and the pancreas presented the same characteristics on dynamic CT/MRI, ultrasonography, and positron emission tomography using fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucos

Magnetic seizure therapy in treatment-resistant depression: clinical, neuropsychological and metabolic effects.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic seizure therapy (MST), despite being in an early phase of clinical research, has been demonstrated to be associated with antidepressant efficacy. However, safety, tolerability and efficacy data in connection with functional brain activity from larger samples are lacking. The aim of this study was to determine clinical and cognitive effects of MST and the influence of MST on regional brain glucose metabolism. METHOD: Twenty-six patients suffering from treatment-resistant depression (TRD) underwent MST. Ten patients underwent a randomized trial and 16 patients an open-label

Usefulness of 11C-methionine-positron emission tomography for the diagnosis of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy.

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a subacute demyelinating disease of the brain caused by the JC virus that occurs mainly in immunocompromised patients. The prognosis is very poor. As the lesion looks like non- specific leukoencephalopathy, making a diagnosis at the early stage is very difficult. We report three PML cases in which there was a mismatch between (11)C-methionine-positron emission tomography (MET-PET) uptake and (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) uptake. All three cases demonstrated the hyper-uptake of MET around the white matter lesi

Pulmonary intravascular lymphoma detected by FDG PET-CT: a case report.

Intravascular lymphoma is a rare subtype of extranodal Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Its prognosis is poor in a high percentage of cases due to its insidious appearance and low clinical suspicion. Its diagnosis is usually only reached after an autopsy. It may affect different organs as a whole or only one organ. It is extremely rare that the lung is the only damaged organ. Its diagnosis depends of the clinician's suspicion and proper evaluation with imaging studies as well as correct selection of the organ to be biopsied. When detected on time, the treatment of choice is a combination of a series of

Successful surgical treatment for pulmonary crystal-storing histiocytosis following the onset of gastric non-hodgkin lymphoma.

Crystal-storing histiocytosis is a rare clinical entity characterized by an increase in the number of abnormal histiocytes accompanied by accumulation of crystallized immunoglobulins. We describe the case of an 80-year-old man who presented with crystal-storing histiocytosis of the lung 13 years after receiving a diagnosis of gastric non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL ; clinical stage, Lugano IA). After wedge resection of the left upper lobe, the histological findings showed crystal-storing histiocytosis with CD68(+), some small to medium lymphoid cells with CD79a(+) with κ(+(weekly)) and λ(-), and som

Glucose metabolism in nine patients with probable sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: FDG-PET study using SPM and individual patient analysis.

Only one large series using statistical parametric mapping (SPM) reports on FDG-PET in sporadic (Heidenhain and non-Heidenhain variant) Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD), describing hypometabolism in bilateral parietal, frontal, and occipital cortices. Our aim was to study FDG-PET in non-Heidenhain probable sCJD patients in order to assess the most pertinent FDG-PET pattern, and to compare FDG-PET and MRI data. We used both SPM and NeuroGam(®) software analysis, compared with healthy controls, to describe the FDG-PET abnormalities. Individual FDG-PET and MRI-DWI data were compared. SPM group an

Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography: a novel approach for the diagnosis of cholecystitis for equivocal diagnoses after ultrasound imaging.

Although hepatobiliary iminodiacetic acid (HIDA) scan is often used when the diagnosis of cholecystitis remains questionable after ultrasound, it carries a high false-positive rate and has other limitations. Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography (18FDG PET-CT) has recently gained enthusiasm for its ability to detect infection and inflammation. In this study, we evaluate the accuracy of 18FDG PET-CT in diagnosing cholecystitis. Nineteen patients with suspected cholecystitis (Group S) underwent PET-CT and 10 had positive PET-CT findings. Of these 10, nine underwent

Carboplatin plus paclitaxel in the successful treatment of advanced inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor.

A 26-year-old man with unresectable inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) presented with multiple metastases in the thoracic vertebra and lymph nodes as detected by positron emission tomography (PET) received chemotherapy with carboplatin plus paclitaxel. After three cycles of chemotherapy, fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-PET/CT revealed tumor regression and significant reduction of FDG uptake in all lesions. The patient received six cycles of chemotherapy without any severe adverse event, and there was no sign of disease progression for seven months. This regimen is well tolerated and

The maximum standardized uptake value of fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography of the primary tumour is a good predictor of pathological nodal involvement in clinical N0 non-small-cell lung cancer.

OBJECTIVES: Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) plays an important role in the evaluation of resectable non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, this modality cannot be used to detect histological nodal involvement, which can result in stage-migration for resectable lung cancer. In this study, we tried to evaluate the possibility of predicting histological nodal involvement in patients with NSCLC using the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) of FDG-PET of the primary tumour instead of that of the lymph nodes. METHODS: Between February 2008 and September 2011,

Acute visual loss after preoperative embolization of an ethmoidal metastasis.

An unintentional embolization of retinal arteries is rare and has been documented as a complication after embolization of arteries supplying head and neck tumors. However, occlusion of the central retinal artery with severe loss of vision has never been reported to be a complication from embolization of tumor-supplying ethmoidal branches of the ophthalmic artery. A 40 year-old male patient with a history of right nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma underwent preoperative radiological embolization of an ethmoidal metastasis after having experienced a life-threatening sinus bleeding. The role of myocardial viability assessed by perfusion/F-18 FDG imaging in children with anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery.

PURPOSE: Although surgical treatments evolved, the short-term postoperative mortality is still high in children with anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery (ALCAPA), and long-term survivors may suffer from restrained functional recovery. Therefore, an optimal means in predicting postoperative reversal is demanded. In this study, we assess the utility of myocardial perfusion/F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) imaging in the evaluation of myocardial viability and postsurgery functional recovery in children with ALCAPA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was

Long-term developmental outcome in patients with West syndrome after epilepsy surgery.

It has been hypothesized that early seizure control may prevent children with intractable epileptic spasms (ES) from developmental regression and may contribute to better developmental outcome. The effectiveness of surgery for ES has been reported. We investigated long-term post-operative outcomes of seizure control and development in patients with symptomatic West syndrome (S-WS) who underwent epilepsy surgery. Six children who underwent surgical intervention for intractable ES were retrospectively investigated. Cortical malformations were observed on pre-operative MRI in all patients, with h
