[The influence of sports injuries on sport participation and work].

The incidence and complications of sport injuries in athletics, basketball, gymnastics, hockey, netball, cricket, tennis and soccer were analysed from questionnaire responses of 239 sport participants in Pretoria. Lower limb injuries were most common (73%). Torn tendomuscular organs represented 29,3% of the total number of injuries; sprains, strains and dislocations 35,9%; and fractures 20,5%. Medical treatment was sought by 62,8% of the patients. A total of 60,7% of the subjects was advised to suspend further participation in sport, but 30,6% failed to do so and more than half of these again

Occult cervical spine injuries in fatal traffic accidents.

Post-mortem radiographs as well as careful inspection at autopsy of 100 consecutive traffic accident victims revealed an incidence of cervical spine injury of 24%. All but four of the 24 fractures and/or dislocations were localized to the level between the occiput and the axis. One half of the cases were not clinically suspected of having spine injuries before the detailed postmortem search. Seventeen of the 24 cervical spines were resected en bloc and the pathologic anatomy of the injuries was determined. The high incidence of cervical spine injuries and the anatomic findings at dissection ha

[Acropathia ulcero-mutilans non familiaris (Bureau-Barrière). (Case report with special reference to the x-ray findings) (author's transl)].

Four cases of non-familiar acropathia ulcero-mutilans (Bureau-Barriere) are described. In all cases there was a history of alcoholism, abnormal liver function, painless foot ulcers and polyneuritis. The radiological changes were confined to the lower extremities. There were osteolytic changes in the metatarsal heads and the bases of the proximal phalanges, particularly of the great toes; in addition, there was general demineralisation of the bones of the feet. One case was remarkable in that the tarsal bones and the proximal protions of the metatarsals were also involved. A variety of bone def

Traumatic Epidermal Inclusion Cyst After Minimally Invasive Surgery of a Displaced Intra-Articular Calcaneal Fracture: A Case Report.

Epidermal inclusion cysts are common epithelial cysts of the skin. The latter classically originate from progressive cystic ectasia of the infundibular portion of hair follicle. Therefore, these cysts are usually found in hairy regions and rarely in glabrous skin such as the palms and soles. The etiology of glabrous epidermal inclusion cysts appear to be different from that of those located in hairy regions. It has been suggested that implantation of epithelial cells into subcutaneous tissue, such as during trauma, is most likely the pathophysiologic basis. Epidermal inclusion cysts on the pal

Diagnosis and treatment of post-traumatic medial and lateral elbow ligament incompetence.

Elbow instability may occur secondary to soft tissue or bony injuries. Predictable patterns of instability do occur. Identification of disrupted osseous or ligamentous constraints allows for an algorithmic and predictable treatment plan. Maintaining a high index of suspicion allows early recognition and treatment of elbow instability. Treatment based on recognized principles is the key to preventing recurrent instability and late arthrosis while maintaining functional elbow motion.

Contemporary outcomes of primary total hip arthroplasty in patients with inflammatory arthritis.

AIMS: Contemporary outcomes of primary total hip arthroplasties (THAs) with highly cross-linked polyethylene (HXLPE) liners in patients with inflammatory arthritis have not been well studied. This study examined the implant survivorship, complications, radiological results, and clinical outcomes of THA in patients with inflammatory arthritis. METHODS: We identified 418 hips (350 patients) with a primary diagnosis of inflammatory arthritis who underwent primary THA with HXLPE liners from January 2000 to December 2017. Of these hips, 68% had rheumatoid arthritis (n = 286), 13% ankylosing spondy

Direct anterior total hip arthroplasty with dual mobility cup for femoral neck fractures in dementia patients.

BACKGROUND: Dementia patients with femoral neck fractures (FNFs) are unable to understand their dislocated limb positioning, which may impair rehabilitation and result in poorer functional recovery. Recently, good clinical results have been reported for the direct anterior approach for total hip arthroplasty (DAA-THA) using a dual mobility cup (DMC) for displaced FNFs. This study aimed to investigate differences in the clinical outcome of THA for displaced FNFs in patients with and without dementia. METHODS: This study was retrospective and included 151 patients who underwent DAA-THA with DMC

Clinical outcomes in patients with neurological disorders following periacetabular tumor removal and endoprosthetic reconstruction of the hemipelvis.

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment of musculoskeletal tumors in the periacetabular region present extremely difficult due to the complex anatomy and need for reconstruction. Orthopedic surgeons face more difficulties in patients with neurological conditions, which can cause increased muscle tone, an elevated risk of fractures, and compromised bone quality. There is limited evidence regarding endoprosthetic reconstruction for periacetabular tumors in individuals with neurological disorders. METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective study to examine the outcomes of patients with preexisti

The efficacy of three on-farm euthanasia methods for broiler chickens throughout the production cycle.

1. There is a need to humanely kill moribund or injured broiler birds on-farm with no reasonable chance of recovery. Two experiments evaluated the efficacy of three commercially applicable killing methods; manual cervical dislocation (CD), mechanical cervical dislocation with the Koechner Euthanising Device (KED) and a non-penetrative captive bolt device (Zephyr-EXL; ZEXL), at 7, 21 or 35 d of age, on their ability to induce insensibility (unconsciousness and loss of brain stem reflexes) and death.2. Experiment one assessed the damage to the cranial-cervical region resulting from the methods a

Beyond trauma: The unforeseen challenge of Brugada syndrome.

Brugada syndrome, a rare cardiac disorder stemming from mutations in sodium channels, manifests as ventricular arrhythmias, potentially culminating in sudden cardiac death. This case involves a 37-year-old male with a right type 3C open elbow fracture-dislocation and brachial artery injury, who presented with ST-segment changes in avR, v1, v2, and v3. After induction with general anesthesia, postoperative evaluation and cardiac consultation revealed a diagnosis of Brugada syndrome, specifically displaying a Brugada type 1 pattern. The electrocardiogram pattern of Brugada syndrome can mimic acu

Changes in bone mineral density and body composition of children with well-controlled homocystinuria caused by CBS deficiency.

Homocystinuria due to cystathionine β-synthase (CBS) deficiency is an inherited disorder of the metabolism of methionine. Clinical manifestations include mental retardation, dislocation of the optic lens, vascular lesions, arterial and venous thromboembolism, skeletal abnormalities, and osteoporosis. Most homocystinuria patients diagnosed in adulthood have severe osteoporosis, and homocystinuria is frequently mentioned as a cause of osteoporosis. Good control of plasma homocysteine may prevent or delay some of these complications. However, the effectiveness of bone mineral density (BMD) gain o

Guillain-Barre syndrome: A possibility in a spinal cord injured patient.

A 28-year-old male had paraplegia as a result of fracture dislocation of T12/L1 six years ago. He was functioning independently until four weeks ago, when he started complaining of trunkal paraesthesia which later progressed to include the upper extremities. The initial diagnosis was that of posttraumatic syringomyelia (PTS). While awaiting the MRI scan he developed weakness of upper limbs. The weakness restricted his self-care activities including transfers. The MRI did not show any evidence of syringomyelia. Neurological consultation and assessment yielded provisional diagnosis of Guillain-B…

Hip resurfacing: indications, results, and conclusions.

Hip resurfacing using metal-on-metal bearings has increased in popularity as a viable treatment option for young, active patients with osteoarthritis. Theoretic advantages of this procedure include preservation of bone stock, reduction in osteolysis, and a reduced risk of dislocation when compared with conventional hip arthroplasty with smaller diameter metal-on-polyethylene bearings. Concerns associated with the use of metal-on-metal bearings during hip resurfacing include the production of metal ions with unknown carcinogenic and immunologic effects. The long-term survival of the modern meta

[Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for migration of an orthopedic fixation wire in the mediastinum: report of a case].

Migration of an orthopedic fixation wire into the thoracic cavity is an uncommon complication. We present a 64-year-old male undergoing intra-thoracic migration of a Kirschner wire. The patient had undergone the treatment of sternoclavicular joint dislocation due to clavicular fracture. Four months after the operation, a chest X-ray revealed a metallic foreign body in the mediastinum. A chest computed tomography (CT) showed the object in the anterior mediastinum adjacent to the aortic arch. An emergency video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery was successfully performed to remove a 60-mm-long Kirs

Pharyngeal perforation and spontaneous extrusion of the cervical graft with its fixation device: a late complication of C2-C3 fusion via anterior approach.

Stabilisation of the fracture-dislocation of the cervical spine is achieved effectively by anterior or posterior or combined methods with attendant short and long term benefits, risks and complications associated with each procedure. Recently anterior methods have gained wider acceptance. A variety of preoperative and postoperative complications associated with anterior cervical fusion are well recognised. However, the delayed pharyngeal or oesophageal perforation is a rare, serious and life threatening complication of an anterior cervical internal fusion. The authors report a case of delayed p
