Bloodstream infections and antibiotic resistance patterns: a six-year surveillance study from southern Italy.

Bloodstream infections (BSI) are associated with high morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to describe the epidemiology of BSI and antimicrobial resistance patterns amongst its common bacterial causes. We conducted a retrospective record review of blood culture results of patients hospitalized with BSI at University Hospital 'L. Vanvitelli' from 2016 to 2021. For each patient records were obtained from the database using microbiological information. Gram-positive bacteria were the most predominant pathogens followed by Gram-negative bacteria. Among all isolates, bacterial pathogens most f…

Evaluation of antibacterial activity induced by Staphylococcus aureus and Ent A in the hemolymph of Spodoptera littoralis.

The problem of antibiotic resistance considers one of the most dangerous challenges facing the medical field. So, it is necessary to find substitutions to conventional antibiotics. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are a bio-functional derivative that have been observed as one of the important solutions to such upcoming crisis. Owing to their role as the first line of defense against bacteria, fungi, and viruses. This study was conducted to induce the immune response of Spodoptera littoralis larvae by inoculation of sub lethal doses of Staphylococcus aureus and its enterotoxin. Since Staphylococca

New mixed amino acids complexes of iron(III) and zinc(II) with isonitrosoacetophenone: Synthesis, spectral characterization, DFT study and anticancer activity.

New mixed Fe(III) and Zn(II) complexes with isonitrosoacetophenone (HINAP) and l-amino acids (such as l-histidine, l-phenylalanine and l-proline) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, UV-Vis, IR and ESR spectroscopy and thermal analyses. The values of molar conductance of the complexes in DMSO solution at 10-3 M concentration indicate their non-electrolyte nature. IR spectroscopy has revealed the coordination of deprotonated ligands to metal through nitrogen and oxygen atoms in an N2O2 arrangement. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed using the h

The small quinolone derived compound HT61 enhances the effect of tobramycin against Pseudomonas aeruginosa in vitro and in vivo.

HT61 is a small quinolone-derived compound previously demonstrated to exhibit bactericidal activity against gram-positive bacteria including methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). When combined with the classical antibiotics and antiseptics neomycin, gentamicin, mupirocin and chlorhexidine, HT61 demonstrated synergistic bactericidal activity against both MSSA and MRSA infections in vitro. In this study, we investigated the individual antimicrobial activity of HT61 alongside its capability to potentiate the efficacy of tobram…

Anaerobic bacterial meningitis in adults.

Anaerobic infection is a very uncommon condition in adult bacterial meningitis (ABM), and its clinical characteristics have yet to be clarified. We enrolled 540 patients with culture-proven bacterial meningitis during a study period of 30 years (1986-2015), of whom 13 (2.4%) had anaerobic infections. These 13 patients were eight men and five women, aged 22-77 years. Among them, 53.8% (7/13) had a postneurosurgical state as the preceding event, and 79.6% (10/13) had underlying medical conditions including diabetes mellitus, malignancy, liver cirrhosis, cerebral infarct and alcoholism. Nosocomia

Antimicrobial Activity of a Bacteriocin Produced by Enterococcus faecalis KT11 against Some Pathogens and Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria.

In this study, the antimicrobial activity of a bacteriocin produced by Enterococcus faecalis KT11, isolated from traditional Kargı Tulum cheese, was determined, and bacteriocin KT11 was partially characterized. The results showed that bacteriocin KT11 was antagonistically effective against various Gram-positive and Gram-negative test bacteria, including vancomycin- and/or methicillin-resistant bacteria. The activity of bacteriocin KT11 was completely abolished after treatment with proteolytic enzymes (proteinase K, α-chymotrypsin, protease and trypsin), which demonstrates the proteinaceous nat

Bacterial pneumonia in kidney transplant recipients.

Bacterial pathogens are the most frequent cause of pneumonia after transplantation. Early after transplantation, recipients are at higher risk for nosocomial infections. The most commonly encountered pathogens during this period are gram-negative bacilli (Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa …), but gram-positive coccus such as Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pneumoniae and anaerobic bacteria can also be found. Empirical antibiotic therapy should be guided by previous colonisation of the recipient and bacterial resistance pattern in the hospital. Six months af

Bacterial Ball as an Unusual Finding in Patients With Chronic Rhinosinusitis.

OBJECTIVES: Pathophysiology of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is very complex and has not yet been clearly understood. To date, various factors have been researched to have relations with the pathogenesis of CRS, such as superantigens and biofilms. Recently, we found an unusual pathological finding in patients with CRS, and we called this new entity as bacteria ball (or bioball). In this study, we analyze the clinical characteristics of bacteria ball occurred in CRS. METHODS: This study enrolled consecutive 247 patients with CRS who underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery from January 201

Peptide consensus sequence determination for the enhancement of the antimicrobial activity and selectivity of antimicrobial peptides.

The rise of multidrug-resistant bacteria is causing a serious threat to the world's human population. Recent reports have identified bacterial strains displaying pan drug resistance against antibiotics and generating fears among medical health specialists that humanity is on the dawn of entering a post-antibiotics era. Global research is currently focused on expanding the lifetime of current antibiotics and the development of new antimicrobial agents to tackle the problem of antimicrobial resistance. In the present study, we designed a novel consensus peptide named "Pepcon" through peptide con
