High-risk fertility behaviour and undernutrition among children under-five in sub-Saharan Africa: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: The study examined high-risk fertility behaviour and its association with under-five undernutrition in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data from 32 sub-Saharan African countries' Demographic and Health Surveys. A weighted sample of 110 522 mother-child pairs was included in final analysis. Multilevel binary logistic regression was used to examine the association between high-risk fertility behaviour and undernutrition. The results were presented using adjusted odds ratio (aOR) with their respective 95% confidence intervals (CIs). SETTIN

A CAMK2B variant associated with tetralogy of Fallot, developmental delay, and growth retardation.

CAMK2B encodes the beta-subunit of calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CAMKII), which is expressed mainly in the brain. Variants of CAMK2A and CAMK2B cause neurodevelopmental disorders, and CAMK2B alterations have been described in at least 14 patients with intellectual disability and developmental delay. Here, we describe a novel CAMK2B variant in a patient with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), developmental delay, and growth retardation. The patient was a 2-year-old female. She was delivered at 36 weeks 6 days gestational age by caesarean section due to non-reassuring fetal status, wit

Runting Stunting Syndrome in Broiler Chickens Is Associated with Altered Intestinal Stem Cell Morphology and Gene Expression.

Runting stunting syndrome (RSS) in broiler chickens is characterized by altered intestinal morphology and gene expression and stunted growth. The objective of this study was to conduct a retrospective study of gene expression in stem and differentiated cells in the small intestine of RSS chicks. Two different models of RSS were analyzed: broiler chicks that were experimentally infected and broiler chicks that were naturally infected. Experimentally infected chicks were exposed to litter from infected flocks (RSS-litter chicks) or infected with astrovirus (RSS-astrovirus chicks). Intestinal sam

Prevalence and determinants of nutritional status among women and children in Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Nutrition has been a low-priority area in Pakistan, with low visibility from the political leadership. Despite various efforts, Pakistan has been reported to have one of the highest prevalences of child and women malnutrition compared to other developing counties. Therefore, this study intends to examine the prevalence and determinants of nutritional status of women and children in Pakistan. METHODS: The present study uses the Demographic Health Survey (DHS) data from Pakistan 2012-13 (PDHS-3). The nutritional status of women was examined through Body-Mass Index (Underweight, norm

Clinical trial of insulin-like growth factor-1 in Phelan-McDermid syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Phelan-McDermid syndrome (PMS) is caused by haploinsufficiency of the SHANK3 gene and is characterized by global developmental delays and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Based on several converging lines of preclinical and clinical evidence supporting the use of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) in PMS, this study aims to follow-up a previous pilot study with IGF-1 to further evaluate this novel therapeutic for core symptoms of ASD in children with PMS. METHODS: Ten children aged 5-9 with PMS were enrolled. Participants were randomized to receive IGF-1 or placebo (saline) using

Higher prevalence of stunting and poor growth outcomes in HIV-exposed uninfected than HIV-unexposed infants in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: With the growing population of HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU) children globally, it is important to determine population-level growth differences between HEU and HIV-unexposed uninfected (HUU) children. METHODS: We analyzed data from a population-level survey enrolling mother-infant pairs attending 6-week and 9-month immunizations in 140 clinics across Kenya. Weight-for-age (WAZ), length-for-age (LAZ), head circumference-for-age (HCAZ) z-scores and underweight (WAZ < -2), stunting (LAZ < -2), and microcephaly (HCAZ < -2), were compared between HEU and HUU. Intrauterine HIV exposure is associated with linear growth restriction among Ethiopian children in the first 18 months of life.

OBJECTIVE: The role of HIV exposure in determining growth among HIV-uninfected children is debated. We determined whether intrauterine HIV exposure influences linear growth in a cohort of Ethiopian children followed up to 18 months of age in public health facilities in Adama city, Ethiopia. METHODS: Participants were offspring of pregnant women enrolled in a prospective cohort study that included screening for HIV infection during antenatal care. Growth patterns of HIV-exposed and uninfected (HEU) and HIV-unexposed (HU) children were compared up to 18 months of age, with length-for-age z-scor

Two novel AMHR2 gene variants in monozygotic twins with persistent Müllerian duct syndrome: A case report and functional study.

BACKGROUND: Persistent Müllerian duct syndrome (PMDS) is an autosomal recessive congenital abnormality in which Müllerian derivatives, uterus, cervix, upper two-thirds of the vagina, and fallopian tubes persist in otherwise normally virilized males. Mutations in anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) and AMH receptor type II (AMHR2) genes have been identified as causative. However, functional experimental analysis of AMHR2 or AMH variants that cause PMDS is still lacking. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A Chinese Han family affected by PMDS was identified. To assess the history and clinical manifestations of PM

What is known about neuroplacentology in fetal growth restriction and in preterm infants: A narrative review of literature.

The placenta plays a fundamental role during pregnancy for fetal growth and development. A suboptimal placental function may result in severe consequences during the infant's first years of life. In recent years, a new field known as neuroplacentology has emerged and it focuses on the role of the placenta in fetal and neonatal brain development. Because of the limited data, our aim was to provide a narrative review of the most recent knowledge about the relation between placental lesions and fetal and newborn neurological development. Papers published online from 2000 until February 2022 were

A Novel de Novo Variant in 5' UTR of the NIPBL Associated with Cornelia de Lange Syndrome.

Background: Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) is a genetic syndrome characterized by intellectual disability, special facial features, growth retardation, feeding difficulties, and multiple organ system abnormalities. NIPBL variants occur in approximately 80% of CdLS cases. Aims: We report a novel de novo heterozygous pathogenic variant in the NIPBL and its association with CdLS. We also examined the key regulatory sequences of the 5′ untranslated region in NIPBL mRNA. Few studies have reported mutation sites in the 5′ untranslated region (UTR) of the NIPBL that result in CdLS. Methods: The pa

Childhood stunting and micronutrient status unaffected by RCT of micronutrient fortified drink.

Micronutrient supplementation is widely used to prevent stunting in children under 5 years in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), but the impact of treatment has been disappointing, possibly due to non-compliance. Our aim was to deliver long-term micronutrient supplementation via a novel, culturally acceptable liquid food to improve linear growth in a high stunting prevalence region. In a randomised control trial, 971 children aged 6-72 months received either 'Chispuditos®' (n = 681), a hot drink (atole) fortified with micronutrients (atole + MN) (9 mg/zinc, 12.5 mg/iron), or lactose-free

A dual-factor model of posttraumatic responses: Which is better, high posttraumatic growth or low symptoms?

OBJECTIVE: Experiencing traumatic events may invoke posttraumatic symptoms (PTS) or growth (PTG). Using a dual-factor approach inspired by the dual-factor model of mental health, we explore the intersections of posttraumatic symptoms and growth with 21 strengths and indicators of psychological, physical, and spiritual well-being. METHOD: A survey completed by 1,966 participants who had experienced at least one prior victimization (average age 29.8 [SD = 1.64]; 63.6% female) assessed strengths, outcomes, and victimization. Participants were classified into four posttraumatic groups: Resilient

Pilot Study of Absolute Telomere Lengths in Preterm Infants.

BACKGROUND: Annually, approximately 15 million babies are born preterm (<37 weeks gestational age) globally. In the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) environment, infants are exposed to repeated stressful or painful procedures as part of routine lifesaving care. These procedures have been associated with epigenetic alterations that may lead to an increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders. Telomere length has been negatively associated with adverse life experiences in studies of adults. OBJECTIVES: This pilot study aimed to describe telomere length in a sample of preterm infants at NICU

Camel milk consumption is associated with less childhood stunting and underweight than bovine milk in rural pastoral districts of Somali, Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study.

Undernutrition is a major global health problem. Various types of animal milk are used for feeding children at early ages; however, associations of camel milk (CaM) and bovine milk (BM) with the nutritional status of children have not been explored. A comparative community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among pre-schoolers in rural pastoral districts of Somali, Ethiopia. Children were selected from households with lactating camels or cows. Anthropometric measurements followed standard procedures for height-for-age, weight-for-age and weight-for-height scores. Independent sample t-te
