Enterobius vermicularis and Helicobacter pylori coinfection in a geriatric patient on long-term steroids: A case report.

Enterobius vermicularis typically affects children, while Helicobacter pylori is associated with chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. Reports of E. vermicularis infection in geriatric patients are exceedingly rare, and recovery of the adult worm in stool specimens is unusual. We describe an 82-year-old male on long-term corticosteroids who presented with gastrointestinal symptoms. Stool microscopy demonstrated E. vermicularis, and H. pylori infection was confirmed by rapid urease test, PCR, and histopathology. The patient responded to Albendazole and standard H. pylori eradication thera…

Elucidating the Pathogenic Role of Helicobacter pylori Infection in Hematologic Disorders: Mechanistic Insights and Future Perspectives.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a helical, flagellated Gram-negative bacterium, exhibits remarkable adaptability within the human gastric niche, enabling survival under acidic, nutrient-limited, and oxidative stress conditions. Beyond its established role in gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and gastric adenocarcinoma, accumulating evidence implicates H. pylori in a spectrum of hematologic disorders. Iron deficiency anemia (IDA), vitamin B12 deficiency, immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), and gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma represent the most substantiated associat…

Global Diversity of Helicobacter pylori Prophages Reveals Genetic Drivers of Virulence and Associations With Gastric Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori is a globally prevalent gastric pathogen, and chronic infection accounts for most gastric cancer (GC) cases worldwide. Major oncogenic determinants, including CagA, VacA, and the type IV secretion system, show marked geographic heterogeneity, yet the evolutionary forces shaping this uneven distribution remain unclear. Prophages can mediate horizontal gene transfer and modulate bacterial fitness and virulence, but their contribution to H. pylori carcinogenicity has not been systematically evaluated. METHODS: We characterized prophage diversity, population struct…

The association between Helicobacter pylori infection and asthma risk: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) has been hypothesized to modulate immune responses in the context of asthma, recent epidemiological evidence has yielded contradictory results. This updated meta-analysis systematically re-evaluates the association between H. pylori infection and asthma risk to clarify these discrepancies. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following PRISMA 2020 guidelines. We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Embase up to February 2026 to identify eligible observational studies. To evaluate the…

Differential analysis of gut microbiota and metabolites in patients with Graves' disease and combined Helicobacter pylori infection.

BACKGROUND: Graves' disease (GD) is one of the most common organ-specific autoimmune disorders. Current evidence indicates that GD pathogenesis results from complex gene-environment interactions, although the precise mechanisms remain incompletely elucidated. This study aims to investigate effects of environmental factors such as gut microbiota and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection on the pathogenesis of GD. METHODS: This study enrolled 88 treatment-naïve GD patients and 33 healthy controls. Plasma H.pylori-IgG levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Vari…

Helicobacter pylori-specific genes in gastric biopsies of patients with autoimmune gastritis with and without gastric cancer.

OBJECT: Autoimmune gastritis(AIG), at increased gastric cancer(GC) risk, may be purely autoimmune or H.pylori-triggered. GC-risk in AIG may be H. pylori-related, but cannot be excluded in pure AIG. Distinguishing pure AIG(H.pylori-naïve) from that H.pylori-triggered is challenging. H.pylori-specific genes in AIG patients' gastric tissue have not yet been assessed. This study aimed to assess H.pylori-specific genes on DNA extracted from gastric biopsies in AIG patients with and without GC. METHODS: This single-center study included 63 histologically-diagnosed AIG patients (median age 63 years;

Neonatal infection with Helicobacter pylori affects stomach and colon microbiome composition and gene expression in mice.

The stomach bacterium Helicobacter pylori is estimated to infect half of the world's population, and the health implications are affected by the age at infection. Neonatal H. pylori infection of mice is a relevant model to investigate metabolic and immunological effects. We performed an explorative study at the dynamic 1st month of life to compare the composition of the gastrointestinal tract microbiome and stomach gene expression of mice neonatally infected with H. pylori with that of uninfected mice. We found that H. pylori was present only in the stomach, and that H. pylori loads increase w…

Traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of Helicobacter pylori-related gastritis: The mechanisms of signalling pathway regulations.

Helicobacter pylori-associated gastritis (HPAG) is a common condition of the gastrointestinal tract. However, extensive and long-term antibiotic use has resulted in numerous adverse effects, including increased resistance, gastrointestinal dysfunction, and increased recurrence rates. When these concerns develop, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) may have advantages. TCM is based on the concept of completeness and aims to eliminate pathogens and strengthen the body. It has the potential to prevent this condition while also boosting the rate of Helicobacter pylori eradication. This review elabo…

Untargeted metabolomic profiling for identifying systemic signatures of helicobacter pylori infection in a guinea pig model.

Infections caused by the Gram-negative bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) can lead to gastritis, gastric or duodenal ulcers, and even gastric cancer in humans. Investigating quantitative changes in soluble biomarkers associated with H. pylori infection offers a promising method for monitoring the progression of the infection, inflammatory response and potentially systemic consequences. This study aimed to identify, using an experimental model of H. pylori infection in guinea pigs, the specific metabolomic biomarkers in the serum of H. pylori-infected (32) versus uninfected (32) animals.…

Application of an organoid-based model to explore Helicobacter pylori-human gastric epithelium interaction in vitro.

Helicobacter pylori infection causes histopathologic changes in gastric epithelial cells, resulting in conditions such as gastritis, gastric ulcers, and ultimately, gastric cancer. To date, various experimental models, including cell lines and animal studies, have been employed to investigate these pathological processes. However, each model presents its limitations. This study compared the re-cultured three-dimensional organoids from infected single cells, apical-out, and two-dimensional (2D) organoids models to better understand the mechanisms underlying the epithelial changes caused by H. p…

Russell body gastritis resolved after Helicobacter pylori eradication: a case report and review of the literature.

Russell body gastritis (RBG) is a rare gastric inflammatory lesion characterized by dense infiltration of plasma cells containing Russell bodies (RBs) known as Mott cells. Here, we report a case of RBG that showed resolution 2 months after Helicobacter pylori eradication. A gastric biopsy revealed numerous eosinophilic globular RBs and signet ring cell-like Mott cells. H. pylori infection was identified on the surface of foveolar epithelial cells. Alcian blue staining was negative for RBs. Periodic acid-Schiff staining showed that most RBs were negative, with only a few RBs and Mott cells show…

A Comprehensive Review of Plant and Microbial Natural Compounds as Sources of Potential Helicobacter pylori-Inhibiting Agents.

Helicobacter pylori, the gastric pathogen which colonizes the gastric mucosa of more than half of the world's population, is considered a risk factor for peptic ulcers and is epidemiologically associated with gastric cancer. Antimicrobial eradication of this pathogen has now become a central concern because of its growing resistance to frontline antibiotics such as clarithromycin and metronidazole. Moreover, these antibiotics can have adverse effects on the normal human gut flora and can lead to several health complications. Most times, the antibiotic doses become intolerable to the elderly po…

Genomic determinants of antibiotic resistance for Helicobacter pylori treatment: a retrospective phenotypic and genotypic observational study.

BACKGROUND: Rising antimicrobial resistance of Helicobacter pylori is a public health challenge. Genomic-based susceptibility testing allows for the identification of resistance-associated mutations, complementing conventional diagnostics and advancing towards pathogen-based personalised therapies. Our study aimed to identify genes and mutations involved in antimicrobial resistance in H pylori and evaluate the extent to which these markers can be used as predictors of phenotypic resistance against clarithromycin and levofloxacin. METHODS: In this retrospective phenotypic and genotypic observa…
