Sperm guidance in mammals - an unpaved road to the egg.

Contrary to the prevalent view, there seems to be no competition in the mammalian female genital tract among large numbers of sperm cells that are racing towards the egg. Instead, small numbers of the ejaculated sperm cells enter the Fallopian tube, and these few must be guided to make the remaining long, obstructed way to the egg. Here, we review the mechanisms by which mammalian sperm cells are guided to the egg.

The evolution of myiasis in humans and other animals in the Old and New Worlds (part II): biological and life-history studies.

Myiasis, which is the dipteran parasitism of living vertebrates, occurs in several forms - ranging from benign to fatal, opportunistic to obligate - and seems to have evolved through two distinct routes: saprophagous and sanguinivorous. However, the convergent evolution of morphological and life-history traits seems to have had a major role in confusing the overall picture of how myiasis evolved and this simplistic division is further complicated by the existence of both ectoparasitic and endoparasitic species of myiasis-causing Diptera, the evolutionary affinities of which remain to be resolv

IgE: a question of protective immunity in Trichinella spiralis infection.

The best-known function of immunoglobulin E (IgE) is the initiation of allergic reaction. However, it does not make sense that IgE exists only for allergy, which is harmful for the body and does not have a beneficial role. In this article, we focus on IgE in Trichinella spiralis infection in rodents and humans, and discuss the possible roles of IgE in protection and pathogenesis.

Natural history of cystic echinococcosis in humans.

This study provides a contribution to understanding of the natural history of the hydatid cyst during its evolution in the human liver examining the high morphostructural variability of larval forms of Echinococcus granulosus. A detailed study of a large sample of intact cysts removed from patients surgically treated by means of total pericystectomy, has enabled to outline the different developmental stages of the parasite over time, up to its death and complete degeneration.

The homologous and interspecies transmission of Cryptosporidium parvum and Cryptosporidium meleagridis.

Experimental infections have been performed in several mammals and birds to determine the host's specificity for Cryptosporidium parvum (of human and bovine origin) and for Cryptosporidium meleagridis (isolated from broiler chicken). The C. parvum infection (of human origin) was established also in calves (Bos taurus), lambs (Ovis aries), mice (Mus musculus), and rats (Ratus norvegicus), but not in broiler chickens (Gallus domestica). The C. parvum infection (of bovine origin), was achieved in calves, lambs, dogs (Canis familiaris), cats (Felis domesticus), rabbits (Orytolagus cuniculus), mice

Snail-parasite compatibility and prevalence of Schistosoma haematobium on the shores of Lake Kariba, Zambia.

Reduced snail-parasite compatibility might be at least partially responsible for the decrease observed, over the last three decades, in the prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis on the shores of Lake Kariba, Zambia. To explore this possibility, the prevalences of urinary schistosomiasis in schoolchildren were investigated in three disparate areas of Zambia (Lake Kariba, Lake Bangweulu and Lusaka), and attempts were made to infect the snails that developed from the eggs of snails collected from each of these sites with Schistosoma haematobium from each of the sites. The prevalence of S. haemato

Lymphatic filariasis in Papua New Guinea: prospects for elimination.

Lymphatic filariasis is a significant public health problem in several Pacific island countries. Papua New Guinea is one of the most populous countries in this region, and 39% of its residents are estimated to be infected with Wuchereria bancrofti. The Ministries of Health of the 22 islands and territories in the Pacific region are committed to taking action against lymphatic filariasis. Accordingly, a regional collaborative effort aimed at the control of filariasis has been organized under the auspices of a program referred to as PacELF. The main objective of PacELF is to eliminate filariasis

Microbes and microbial toxins: paradigms for microbial-mucosal interactions. VI. Entamoeba histolytica: parasite-host interactions.

The protozoan intestinal parasite Entamoeba histolytica remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. E. histolytica causes two major clinical syndromes, amebic colitis and amebic liver abscess. Recent advances in the development of in vitro and in vivo models of disease, new genetic approaches, the identification of key E. histolytica virulence factors, and the recognition of crucial elements of the host response to infection have led to significant insights into the pathogenesis of amebic infection. E. histolytica virulence factors include 1) a surface galactose binding l

Infochemicals in mosquito host selection: human skin microflora and Plasmodium parasites.

The interaction between the African malaria vector Anopheles gambiae and its human host has traditionally been viewed within a bitrophic context, considering only the human and the mosquito. Recently, the influence of the Plasmodium parasite on the interaction has been recognized, because it affects the physiology and/or behaviour of humans and mosquitoes. However, studies on odour-mediated host-seeking behaviour of An. gambiae and other Diptera have provided evidence that a fourth group of organisms should be taken into consideration. Human skin microflora play a role in the production of odo

Echinococcosis.

Echinococcosis is a human disease caused by the larval form of Taenia echinococcus, which lives in the gut of the dog, wild canides and other carnivorous animals which represent the definitive hosts and involves as intermediate hosts both domestic and wild animals. Humans become accidental intermediate hosts by ingesting Taenia eggs. The main species pathogenic for man are E granulosus causing cystic echinococcosis with worldwide distribution and endemic in sheep and cattle breeding countries, and E multilocularis causing alveolar echinococcosis, with preferential distribution in the northern

Trapping the flies that cause myiasis: their responses to host-stimuli.

A critical phase in the life cycle of the fly species that cause myiasis is host location by the adult females, whether by direct location of and contact with the host, or by indirect location through the selection of sites frequented by hosts. The stimuli to which these flies respond in host location, principally visual and olfactory, are discussed here in the context of their use to enhance the performance of trapping systems used in research, monitoring and control. The three major families of flies encountered in myiasis can be divided into two groups for comparison of host-location strate

Magnesium-potassium interactions in cardiac arrhythmia. Examples of ionic medicine.

Ionic biology involving Ca2+, Na+, K+ and Mg2+ across the cell membrane and in the development of the action potential is reviewed with reference to cardiac arrhythmia. K+ and Mg2+ deficiency which frequently occur together lead to abnormal ionic transfer of Na+, K+ and Ca2+ with development of automaticity, triggered impulses and reentrant tachycardia. Tachycardia occurring in acute myocardial ischemia, congestive heart failure, hypertensives on diuretics and digitalis toxicity is examined according to the concept of ionic imbalance. Relationships between the Rhipicephalus sanguineus complex ecology and Mediterranean spotted fever epidemiology in France.

The authors examine the epidemiologic features of Mediterranean spotted fever in France in light of the bioecological peculiarities of each of the three known member of the Rhipicephalus sanguineus tick group (R. sanguineus, R. turanicus, R. pusillus). The results show that R. sanguineus is the main vector. Certain aspects of this tick species are of interest: affinity for man, close contact with humans for a long periods, peak of tick population (preimaginal stages) at the same time as the peak of the disease. The largest populations of R. sanguineus are noted in the endemic zone of human ric

The impact of cultural and environmental changes on the epidemiology and control of human babesiosis.

The infection of humans with Babesia spp. has provided a well studied example of how cultural and environmental factors have contributed to the spread of an infection. Individuals developing babesiosis have been those engaging in life styles which put them at risk of tick bites. Farmers, hunters and other outdoor types are most frequently infected. The forms of human babesiosis which occur in the north-eastern United States are directly related to the spread of deer and the deer tick, which is the vector of the Babesia responsible for human infection. The spread of deer in the region was a dir

[Schistosomiasis mansoni: dynamics of transmission].

The following remarks were addressed at the round table that discussed the alternative approaches to schistosomiasis control. The address begins with a short analysis of the progressive spread of the area of distribution of the disease, and of the difficulties faced by those in charge of control programs, conventional or otherwise. A model was sketched, taking into consideration the distinct classes of factors involved in the dynamics of transmission: biological, immunological, ecological, socio-cultural, and economical. The true significance and pertinence of such a model was analysed, and th
