The effect of psychotropic drugs phenobarbital, benzonal, hexamidine and steroid hormone hydrocortizon acetate on the process of metabolic activation of mutagenicity of nitrosomorpholine, cyclophosphamide and benzidine was examines using tester strains TA 1950 and TA 1538 of Salmonella typhimurium (by B. N. Ames). The listed above activators did not modify essentially the mutagenic effect of benzidine. The mutagenic action of nitrosomorpholine was increased by the presence of hydrocortizon acetate. The effects of glucocorticoids on the steroidogenesis of ovarian granulosa cells were investigated. Cortisol and dexamethasone inhibited the increase in aromatase activity induced by FSH in cultured rat granulosa cells. In the same cultures progesterone production was stimulated to a maximum of 167% of the control level. The enzyme which interconverts the active hormone cortisol (F) and its biologically inactive analog cortisone (E), viz. 11 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, is known to be present in many tissues. In this study, its possible role as a regulator of cortisol concentration in the human lung was investigated. The promoting effect of ACTH on carnitine and lipid metabolism was studied in patients with various endocrine hypofunctions. The results were compared with those of normal subjects. This 14-year-old patient with bilateral simultaneous papillitis experienced no light perception in either eye for 24 hours and had a complete recovery of central and peripheral vision 3 weeks later. Fluorescein angiography confirmed the diagnosis. Although her hospital work-up was negative except for a mildly elevated CSF protein, it seems most likely that this was a postviral syndrome based on the bilaterality, rapid recovery of vision, and the age group.

Placental steroid sulfatase deficiency is an unusual cause of low estriol production during pregnancy. Its importance lies in the differentiation of this disorder from the more ominous fetal defects that result in low estriol levels. Experience in the management of 100 cases of acromegaly is described. Three quarters of these had been referred directly to the endocrine clinic at the Middlesex Hospital.
