Drug metabolism in liver disease. Identification of patients with impaired hepatic drug metabolism.

Antipyrine half-life (AP t1/2) was measured in 62 patients with, and 10 control patients without, liver disease to ascertain possible factors which may be useful in identifying patients with abnormal drug metabolism. Antipyrine metabolism was normal or marginally impaired in patients with compensated cirrhosis or acute hepatitis, whereas it was frequently abnormal in those with chronic active hepatitis or advanced alcoholic liver disease. A high degree of correlation was found among AP t1/2 and prothrombin time, hepatic encephalopathy, and ascites. Of patients with severely impaired drug metab

The relationship between fatigue, psychological and immunological variables in acute infectious illness.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to explore the longitudinal relationships between physical and psychological symptoms and immunological factors following acute infective illnesses. METHOD: Preliminary data from a prospective investigation of patients with serologically proven acute infectious illnesses due to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), Ross River virus (RRV) or Q fever are reported. Patients were assessed within 4 weeks of onset of symptoms and then reviewed 2 and 4 weeks later. Physical illness data were collected at interview. Psychological and somatic symptom profiles were assessed by s

Immunofluorescence studies on immunoglobulins in the lymphoid cells of human peripheral blood.

Immunofluorescence was applied for the detection of intracellular immunoglobulins in human peripheral blood cells. The technique permitted the screening of large numbers of cells and the discrimination of two fluorochromes within each cell. In this way distribution patterns were obtained for the major immunoglobulin classes and for both light chain types. In contrast to the analogous bone marrow patterns there was no correlation with the distribution pattern of the immunoglobulins in the serum in the samples without paraproteinaemia. These results are compatible with the view that the bone mar
