A qualitative phenomenological study of student coping strategies in the VUCA era among first-year health students in Malang.

INTRODUCTION: first-year students in health programs face major challenges in the volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA) era, marked by sudden academic changes, complex workloads, and future uncertainty. These pressures often trigger significant academic stress. While coping strategies are key in managing this stress, few studies have comprehensively examined the contextual factors influencing students´ coping choices. This study has identified the factors that shape students´ coping strategies in navigating academic stress during the VUCA era. METHODS: this study employed

High Prevalence and Incidence of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Among Women Across Pregnancy and the Postpartum.

Objective: During the perinatal period, women are at an increased risk for the onset/exacerbation of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and may experience perinatal-specific obsessions and/or compulsions. Past research has provided preliminary findings regarding the prevalence of OCD in the perinatal period but has often reported limited metrics and ignored perinatal specific symptoms. This research aimed to assess the prevalence and incidence of maternal OCD between the third trimester in pregnancy and 6 months postpartum. Methods: An unselected sample of 763 English-speaking pregnant women

Individual, household, and community level barriers to ART adherence among women in rural Eswatini.

BACKGROUND: Despite access to free antiretroviral therapy (ART) for all people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), noncompliance to treatment continues to be a significant challenge in Eswatini. Yet studies investigating barriers to ART adherence in Eswatini are scarce. Most notably, there is a lack of research regarding rural women in Eswatini, who are currently the country's most vulnerable to HIV infection. Therefore, the objective of the study is to investigate individual, household, and community level barriers to ART adherence among rural women living with HIV. METHODS: We c

The Development of the Working Alliance and Its Ability to Predict Outcome in Emotion-Focused Therapy for Social Anxiety Disorder.

The study focuses on the alliance of 12 patients receiving emotion-focused therapy for social anxiety. Anxiety symptoms and patient perception of the working alliance were examined weekly. The first eight sessions of each patient were coded for within- and between-sessions alliance levels (1008 segments were coded). At the sample level, the alliance shows linear development over time but high variability between individuals. More than half the patients showed alliance development consistent with the rupture-resolution pattern. Without accounting for the temporal relationship between alliance a

The Diagnostic clinical Interview for Drug Withdrawal 1 (DID-W1) – New Symptoms of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) or Serotonin Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRI): inter-rater reliability.

AIM: A wide range of clinical phenomena have been reported with dose reduction or drug discontinuation of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) or Serotonin Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs). In 2015, a new classification of SRIs/SNRIs withdrawal (i.e., new withdrawal symptoms, rebound symptoms withdrawal, persistent post-withdrawal disorders) was outlined on the basis of the literature and clinical observations. A semistructured clinical interview, the Diagnostic clinical Interview for Drug Withdrawal 1 - New Symptoms of SSRI and SNRI (DID-W1), was developed for identifying

[Suicidal attempts in child and adolescent and bipolar disorders].

BACKGROUND: Child and adolescent psychiatrists are frequently confronted with suicide attempts and comorbid mood disorders. Diagnoses of juvenile bipolar disorders (BD) are rare and controversial and standardized assessment is helpful for a reliable diagnosis. The main objective of this study was to identify the number of juvenile bipolar disorder diagnoses according to DSM-5 criteria in a population of children and adolescents hospitalized for suicide attempts. Secondary objectives were the assessment of a patient's characteristics and the comparison of suicide attempt recurrence during 12 mo

Pilot clinical observations between food and drug seeking derived from fifty cases attending an eating disorder clinic.

Background The reward deficiency syndrome hypothesis posits that genes are responsible for reward dependence and related behaviors. There is evidence that both bulimia and anorexia nervosa, especially in women, have been linked to a lifetime history of substance use disorder (SUD). There are difficulties in accepting food as an addiction similar to drugs; however, increasingly neuroimaging studies favor such an assertion. Case presentations We are reporting the evidence of comorbidity of eating disorders with SUD found within these case presentations. We show 50 case reports derived from two i

Spanish Validation of the Problem Behaviors Assessment-Short (PBA-s) for Huntington's Disease.

A prospective, observational multicenter study was carried out assessing neuropsychiatric symptoms in a sample of 117 subjects in order to validate the Spanish version of the Problem Behaviors Assessment-Short (PBA-s). The psychometric properties of this version were analyzed. Inter- and intra-rater reliability were good: the mean weighted Cohen's kappa was 0.90 for severity scores and 0.93 for frequency scores. Four factors accounting for 56% of the total variance were identified after an exploratory factor analysis: apathy, irritability, depression, and perseveration. The PBA-s correlates st

Predicting Unprotected Sex and Unplanned Pregnancy among Urban African-American Adolescent Girls Using the Theory of Gender and Power.

Reproductive coercion has been hypothesized as a cause of unprotected sex and unplanned pregnancies, but research has focused on a narrow set of potential sources of reproductive coercion. We identified and evaluated eight potential sources of reproductive coercion from the Theory of Gender and Power including economic inequality between adolescent girls and their boyfriends, cohabitation, and age differences. The sample comprised sexually active African-American female adolescents, ages 15-21. At baseline (n = 715), 6 months (n = 607), and 12 months (n = 605), participants completed a 40-min

[Emotion Regulation in Adolescents with Nonsuicidal Self-Injury].

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a prevalent and impairing condition that was newly included in DSM-5 in the section III criteria for further research. Difficulties in emotion regulation play an important role in the development and maintenance of NSSI. This study investigated the emotion regulation in female adolescents with NSSI according to DSM-5 (n=55), clinical control adolescents with mental disorders without NSSI (n=30), and nonclinical control adolescents (n=58) using self-report questionnaires and interviews. As expected, results indicated that adolescents with NSSI have significantl

The parents' ability to attend to the "voice of their child" with incurable cancer during the palliative phase.

OBJECTIVE: In pediatric oncology, parents want, and are expected, to act and decide in the best interest of their child. A recent qualitative study (PRESENCE study) indicated that parents had difficulty in doing so. The aim of this subanalysis was to describe and offer an explanation for the parents' actions in expressing and handling of "the voice of the child." METHOD: A multicenter, qualitative research study comprising 37 interviews conducted with 34 parents of 17 children with incurable cancer, cared for at home, during the palliative phase. A thematic analysis was conducted. RESULTS: T

[Screening interview for early detection of high-functioning autism spectrum disorders].

OBJECTIVE: Various different questionnaires are available for the screening of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). These screening instruments show high sensitivity and are able to identify a large number of individuals with ASD, but they lack the specificity to differentiate individuals with ASD from those children and adolescents with other complex neurobehavioural disorders (such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, emotional disorders, and others), especially for those without intellectual disabilities. METHOD: The present study evaluates the data of 309 individuals (153 with high-fu

Development of Measures to Assess Personal Recovery in Young People Treated in Specialist Mental Health Services.

BACKGROUND: Recovery has become a central concept in mental health service delivery, and several recovery-focused measures exist for adults. The concept's applicability to young people's mental health experience has been neglected, and no measures yet exist. Aim The aim of this work is to develop measures of recovery for use in specialist child and adolescent mental health services. METHOD: On the basis of 21 semi-structured interviews, three recovery measures were devised, one for completion by the young person and two for completion by the parent/carer. Two parent/carer measures were devise

Trauma-related altered states of consciousness: exploring the 4-D model.

Frewen and Lanius (in press) recently articulated a 4-D model as a framework for classifying symptoms of posttraumatic stress into those that potentially occur within normal waking consciousness (NWC) versus those that intrinsically represent dissociative experiences of trauma-related altered states of consciousness (TRASC). Four dimensions were specified: time-memory, thought, body, and emotion. The 4-D model further hypothesizes that in traumatized persons, symptoms of TRASC, compared with NWC forms of distress, will be (a) observed less frequently; (b) less intercorrelated, especially as me
