Spermine impairs biofilm formation by Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a strict human pathogen that causes the sexually transmitted infection termed gonorrhea. Recent reports indicate that gonococci can form a biofilm in vivo and under laboratory conditions. It is unclear, however, if formation of such biofilms or their dispersal are influenced by host factors that would be encountered during infection. In this respect, physiological levels of polyamines have been reported to influence biofilm structures formed by other Gram-negative bacteria as well those formed by Gram-positive bacteria and can cause dispersal of a biofilm formed by Bac

Lupus-like glomerulonephritis: an autoimmune complication of hepatitis C infection.

Lupus-like glomerulnephritis in patients with negative lupus serologies and no extra-renal manifestations of lupus can create a diagnostic dilemma. We describe a 53-year-old gentleman with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection who presented with dialysis-requiring renal failure, renal histologic findings of "full-house" immunofluorescence label and tubuloreticular inclusions on electronic microscopy, but no extra-renal or laboratory signs of systemic lupus erythematosis. Attempted treatment with cyclophosphamide and corticosteroids was limited by cyclophosphamide hypersensitivity. The pati

Babesia bigemina infection in yak (Poephagus grunniens L.): molecular detection and characterization.

Yaks contribute significantly in the Himalayan high land economy. Specific information on prevalence of babesiosis in yaks is lacking. A fast and reliable PCR assay targeting Babesia bigemina small subunit ribosomal RNA sequence (SS rRNA) was laboratory standardized for molecular detection of B. bigemina in yaks. Restriction digestion of the PCR amplified 675 bp target sequence with Vsp I confirmed the prevalent species of Babesia as B. bigemina. Nucleotide sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of PCR amplified 675 bp SS rRNA sequence revealed a close genetic relationship with other bovine isol

Virus-human cell interactomes.

Using global approaches and high-throughput technologies in virology brings a new vision of the infections physiology and allows the identification of cellular factors, mandatory for viral life cycle, that could be targeted by original therapeutic agents. It opens perspectives for the treatment of viral infections by acting on cellular pathways that the virus must use for its own replication. Combining these new molecules with classical antiviral drugs and immunomodulators diversifies and enlarges the antiviral arsenal and contributes to fight drug resistance. Our laboratory and others are con

Proliferative glomerulonephritis with monoclonal immunoglobulin G3κ deposits in association with parvovirus B19 infection.

Proliferative glomerulonephritis with monoclonal immunoglobulin G deposits is a recently described disease entity, characterized by nonorganized electron-dense deposits in glomeruli and immunofluorescence findings indicating monoclonal immunoglobulin G deposits. The pathogenesis of many cases of proliferative glomerulonephritis with monoclonal immunoglobulin G deposits remains unknown. We herein report 2 patients with parvovirus B19 infection who developed acute nephritic syndrome with hypocomplementemia (patient 1) or persistent proteinuria and congestive heart failure (patient 2); however, n

Concomitant infection and local metal reaction in patients undergoing revision of metal on metal total hip arthroplasty.

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) with conventional polyethylene bearings is traditionally the standard operative treatment for endstage arthritis of the hip. This design has excellent survivorship in most populations, with a low occurrence of infection and other associated complications. Due to concern over increased wear in younger, more active populations, other bearing surfaces have been evaluated, particularly metal-on-metal with wear rates theorized to be lower than conventional THA. Unique to metal-on-metal THA, however, is the possibility of local soft tissue reactions that can mimic infect

Musculoskeletal melioidosis.

Melioidosis is an infectious disease caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, mostly affecting patients in Southeast Asia and northern Australia. The disease has been increasingly recognized around the world due to the increased levels of travel and population movement. Clinical manifestations of melioidosis range from fulminant septicemic illness to an indolent local infection. The disease often involves multiple organs, including the lung, spleen, liver, and other visceral organs. Musculoskeletal infection is usually seen as a part of multiorgan involvement, but localized musculoskeletal involve

Murine model for Bartonella birtlesii infection: New aspects.

As a model of persistent infection, various aspects of Bartonella birtlesii infection in laboratory mice, including some immunodeficient mice, are presented, particularly focusing on conditions mimicking natural infection. Bacteraemia was explored using different mice strains routes and inoculum doses (3.4-5x10(7)CFU/mouse). Mice became bacteraemic for 5 (C57Bl6/6) to 10 weeks (Balb/c, Swiss) with peaks ranging from 2x10(3) to 10(5)CFU/mL of blood. The ID route induced the most precocious bacteraemia (day 3) while the higher and longer bacteraemia in immunocompetent mice was obtained with SC w

[A case of Wegener's granulomatosis].

A 73-year-old man who had been diagnosed with bronchiectasis in 2002 was admitted to our hospital with hemoptysis in March 2003. Upon detecting P. aeruginosa from his sputum culture, we diagnosed his condition as an exacerbation of a chronic respiratory infection with bronchiectasis. Levofloxacin was effective and his infection condition was resolved. In June 2006 he was admitted to our hospital again with hemoptysis and complaining of fever. This time, Levofloxacin was not effective. After admission, fourth-generation cephem, carbapenem, and new quinolone antibiotics were ineffective. However

Acute childhood hemiplegia associated with chickenpox and elevated anticardiolipin antibody.

Chickenpox is a common infection of childhood. Central nervous system complications, such as cerebellar ataxia and meningoencephalitis, are estimated to occur in less than 1% of cases of chickenpox. Although transverse myelitis and hemiplegia have also, although rarely, been reported, hemiplegia associated with chickenpox and elevated anticardiolipin antibody has not been reported in the literature. We report the case of a 2.5-year-old boy who developed a right hemiplegia 3 weeks after the onset of a primary varicella infection. The serum level of anticardiolipin antibody IgG was markedly elev

Virological aspects of Epstein-Barr virus infections.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is usually maintained in an asymptomatic and latent form by the host immune system, and primarily by EBV-specific cytotoxic T cells (CTLs). However, EBV has been linked to several refractory diseases such as EBV-associated hemophagocytic syndrome(EBV-AHS) and chronic active EBV infection (CAEBV). In these ectopic diseases, EBV infects T/NK cells, causing severe immunodeficiency with a very high EBV load. In recent years, the laboratory procedure to assess these types of EBV infections has been improved. In particular, real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has been

Congenital toxoplasmosis: a review.

Toxoplasmosis is caused by infection with the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. In the United States, approximately 85% of women of childbearing age are susceptible to acute infection with T. gondii. Acute infections in pregnant women may cause serious health problems when the organism is transmitted to the fetus (congenital toxoplasmosis), including mental retardation, seizures, blindness, and death. An estimated 400 to 4000 cases of congenital toxoplasmosis occur in the U.S. each year. Manifestations of congenital toxoplasmosis may not become apparent until the second or third decade of

Iron metabolism and HIV infection: reciprocal interactions with potentially harmful consequences?

Humans with advanced human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection present some evidence suggestive of iron accumulation. Ferritin concentrations increase with HIV disease progression, and iron accumulates in several tissues. Iron excess may exert negative effects in individuals with HIV. Indeed, iron accumulation seems to be associated with shorter survival, and a number of investigations point to an iron-mediated oxidative stress in subjects with HIV infection. The observations on humans infected with HIV are in part supported by in-vitro findings. Indeed, in-vitro HIV infection is associated

[Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)].

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a B-lymphotropic human herpesvirus that infects the vast majority of the world's population; it establishes lifelong latency in the infected host. The virus enters through the oropharyngeal mucus and replicates in epithelial cells. The infiltrating B lymphocytes become infected and normal resting B cells activated by the virus result in immortalised B cell populations. This growth program utilises all of the latent genes and proteins. Following primary infection, the virus is found in saliva for weeks and chronic shedding participates in transmitting the infection f
