[A laboratory model of the parasitic system of Lyme disease].

A laboratory model of the parasitic system of Lyme borreliosis (LB) with Ixodes persulcatus and Borrelia burgdorferi s.s. underwent 5 epizootic cycles (Cycle I transition of Borreliae by the scheme a tick-->a mouse-->a tick corresponds to the seasonal cycle). A group of 5-6 mice was inoculated with the suspension of infected nymphs by the intracutaneously route and 35-45 days later intact tick larvae or nymphs were fed on them. In the first three cycles, 40-100% of mice in a group (a total of 33 of 59) were susceptible, but 3 of 11 groups of mice were not inoculated. 20-50% of larvae and 75-92…

Effects of light on the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of benzo(a)pyrene and an oil refinery effluent in the newt.

The genotoxicity and/or toxicity of benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) were evaluated under different lighting conditions in larvae and embryos of the newt Pleurodeles waltl. Visible light alone (1,220 lx; 2.1 mW/cm2), UVA alone (250 microW/cm2), or BaP alone (500, 50, 25, 12.5 ppb) had no toxic effects on the larvae. Conversely, toxic effects were observed in animals exposed to BaP (500 ppb)+daylight, or BaP (> or = 25 ppb)+UVA. BaP solutions (50 or 12.5 ppb) were irradiated for 24 hr (Irr BaP) prior to being assayed in the dark. The genotoxicity of BaP (50 ppb) as evaluated in the micronucleus test (on da…

Parents don't dictate the menu: Lack of strong host-specific parental effects may help maintain dietary generalism.

The environment or experiences of a parent generation can impact the fitness of the next generation, a phenomenon known as parental effects. … o not play an important role for fall webworm and the weak effects that do exist depend on both the larval and parental host plant. Rather than demonstrating benefits of parent-host matching, our results demonstrate that the offspring of parents from one poor-quality host performed worse on one high-quality host than offspring from any of the other host …

Stranger in a strange land: An aquatic microsporidium Globulispora mitoportans in a terrestrial host, Amata phegea.

A microsporidium was found in a single larva of the nine-spotted moth Amata phegea (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) in Central Bulgaria. Multiple mature spores, occupying inner tissues of the host, suggest infection rather than environmental contamination. This specimen was primarily processed for light microscopy and for sequencing of the small subunit ribosomal (SSU) region of rDNA. There were multiple ovoid spores, measuring 2.9 × 1.8 μm. The rDNA sequence (GenBank accession number PP003326) showed 99.3% similarity and a genetic distance of 0.006 to Globulispora mitoporans (#KT762153). This microspo…

Voltage imaging of neurons distributed across entire brains of larval zebrafish.

Neurons interact in networks distributed throughout the brain. While much effort has focused on whole-brain calcium imaging, advances in genetically encoded voltage indicators raise the question of whether it might be possible to image neuronal voltage across entire brains. Achieving this requires a microscope with high volumetric imaging rates and signal-to-noise ratio. Here we present a remote-scanning light-sheet microscope capable of imaging genetically encoded voltage indicator-expressing neurons distributed throughout much of the brain of larval zebrafish at a volumetric rate of 200.8 Hz…

Symbiotic bacteria participate in pectinolytic metabolism to enhance larval growth in Zeugodacus cucurbitae.

BACKGROUND: Symbiotic microbes play a pivotal role in the feeding processes of phytophagous insects, and symbiosis has been established as a key strategy for certain species to acquire pectinases. However, whether symbiotic bacteria play a role in the pectinolytic metabolism of Zeugodacus cucurbitae remains unclear. RESULTS: Removal of symbiotic bacteria via egg sterilization significantly reduced larval food consumption, growth, and pectinase activity (P < 0.05), highlighting that the microbiota was required for Z. cucurbitae larval growth under feeding on host plants. Microbial community an…

A review on trombiculiasis: An underreported parasitosis that affects humans and animals, including world distribution, clinical findings, associated pathogens, prophylaxis and identification methods.

Chigger mites comprise three families: Trombiculidae, Leeuwenhoekiidae and Walchiidae, with over 3,000 species worldwide. Their life cycle includes six stages, and the larvae are parasites, while the other stages are free-living predators. Once attached to a host, the larvae spend several days feeding on the host's epithelial tissue, forming the stylostome. An inflammatory reaction can be formed during larval feeding, known as trombiculiasis or trombiculosis. In this study, we provide a literature review using 123 scientific articles on the cases of trombiculiasis in animals and humans reporte…

Evaluation of starvation status in the early developmental stages of black rockfish (Sebastes schlegelii) based on morphological and histological characteristics.

Assessing the nutritional status and identifying major causes of mortality in larvae experiencing varying degrees of starvation are crucial for establishing appropriate feeding protocols and enhancing the welfare of hatchery-reared fish. The black rockfish Sebastes schlegelii is an important species in aquaculture and stock enhancement efforts in China, Japan, and Korea. This study aimed to identify optimal diagnostic morphometric indicators of starvation in newly hatched (0-6 days post-hatch, DPH) and postlarval stages (27-37 DPH) of this valuable fish species through histological analyses. O…

Molecular characterization and elucidation of the function of Hap38 MAPK in the response of Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) to UV-A stress.

The cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), an important pest of cotton, is detrimental to cotton production. Light from UV-A ultraviolet lamps is regarded as a form of environmental stress for insects. In order to investigate the response of H. armigera exposed to UV-A, we explored Hap38 MAPK expression and functions. We hope that the findings of this study will lay the foundation for future investigations into the insect's phototaxis mechanism. A p38 MAPK was cloned and named Hap38 MAPK. A phylogenetic tree showed that Hap38 MAPK was highly conserved. The gene

Larval chondrocranial and internal oral morphology of the neotropical treefrog Boana crepitans (Wied-Neuwied, 1824; Amphibia, Anura, Hylidae).

We describe the internal oral morphology and chondrocranial anatomy for Boana crepitans tadpoles, and compare them with available descriptions for other species in the subfamily Cophomantinae. Among species of the Boana faber group, the chondrocranial anatomy has been reported only for one species internal oral morphology and cranial anatomy are similar to other described species of Boana and Cophomantinae. B. crepitans lacks unique features in the oral cavity and chondrocranium that would distinguish it from other congeneric species. We identify six characters from the internal oral anatomy o

Water immersion tolerance by larval instars of stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans, L1758 (Diptera: Muscidae) impairs the fitness performance of their subsequent stages.

BACKGROUND: In holometabolous insects, environmental factors experienced in pre-imaginal life stages affect the life-history traits within that stage and can also influence subsequent life stages. Here, I assessed tolerance to water immersion by the larval instars of the stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans L. (Diptera: Muscidae) and its impact on the life-history traits of their subsequent life stages. RESULTS: After submerging the three larval instars of S. calcitrans in distilled water, I found that the first instar larvae remained active for longer as compared to the second and third instar la…

Redescription of Apobaetis lakota McCafferty, 2000 (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) and description of two new species from Brazil.

The genus Apobaetis Day is known by its small size and larval shifting-sand habitat preference (psammophilous). Three species of this genus are recorded in North America, from these, only Apobaetis lakota McCafferty needs to be redescribed because its original description is incomplete, turning difficult to distinguish it from species with similar morphology. Therefore, one of the objectives of this study is to redescribe A. lakota. Based on this redescription, two new species from Brazil, with similar morphology could be identified and are described (Apobaetis biancae sp. nov. and Apobaetis j…

Sodium dehydroacetate exposure decreases locomotor persistence and hypoxia tolerance in zebrafish.

Environmental exposure to sodium dehydroacetate (DHA-S) is inevitable as DHA-S is a high-volume preservative widely used in cosmetics, proce … ely low concentrations of commonly addition. Acute DHA-S exposure decreased respiration capacity in larval zebrafish, promoted the expression of HIF-1α (hypoxia-inducible factor-1α) and caused rapid adult zebrafish death in 30 h. We further demonstrated that DHA-S inhibited the activity of succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) inducing respiratory chain interru …

Studies of Limb Regeneration in Larval Xenopus.

A basic protocol is given for animal maintenance and surgery in studies of hindlimb regeneration in larval Xenopus laevis Unlike urodele limbs, those of larval frogs typically show much more variation in the extent of regeneration after amputation. Such variation can be reduced by optimizing the conditions of larval maintenance to regulate the rates of growth and development, by selecting only larvae with normal rates of growth and morphological development for experimental use, and by attention to precision and consistency in the proximo-distal level of surgical amputation.
