Three-dimensional volumetric changes in the airway of growing unilateral complete cleft lip and palate patients after bone-anchored maxillary protraction.

INTRODUCTION: This prospective controlled study evaluates volumetric, length, and average cross-sectional area (aCSA) airway changes in growing patients with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate after 1.5 years of bone-anchored maxillary protraction therapy. METHODS: Thirty-five growing unilateral complete cleft lip and palate patients with maxillary deficiency were included (aged 11.3 ± 0.5 years). Cone-beam computed tomography scans were obtained before bone-anchored maxillary protraction (BAMP) therapy and after 1.5 years. A growing group without cleft (n = 18) patients served as a con…

Identification of Copy Number Variation Among Nonsyndromic Cleft Lip and or Without Cleft Palate With Hypodontia: A Genome-Wide Association Study.

Nonsyndromic cleft lip and or without cleft palate (NSCL/P) with the hypodontia is a common developmental abnormality in humans and animals. This study identified the genetic aberration involved in both NSCL/P and hypodontia pathogenesis. A cross-sectional study using genome-wide study copy number variation-targeted CytoScan 750K array carried out on salivary samples from 61 NSCL/P and 20 noncleft with and without hypodontia Malay subjects aged 7-13 years old. Copy number variations (CNVs) of SKI and fragile histidine triad (FHIT) were identified in NSCL/P and noncleft children using quantitat…

Revisiting the unrepaired unilateral cleft lip and nasal deformity using 3D surface image analysis: A data-driven model and its implications.

BACKGROUND: Current descriptions of the unilateral cleft lip and nasal deformity (uCLND) are based upon limited sample sets and subjective observations. While those descriptions are inconsistent and contradictory, theoretical models, including Hogan's "tilted tripod" and Fisher's "nasal arch forms", have never been tested. Given that favorable outcomes of treatment remain elusive, detailed study of the deformity is critical in devising better treatments. The purpose of this study was to develop a data-driven three-dimensional (3D) model of uCLND that spans the spectrum of presentation and invo…

Maternal genotypes of folate/one-carbon metabolism gene variants and nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate risk in Chile.

The aim of this study was to evaluate, in a case-control design, the association between maternal genotypes for variants in 23 genes involved in folate/one-carbon metabolism and nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P) in a Chilean population. After applying several filters to an Illumina array, we extracted 175 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from 150 mothers of NSCL/P cases and 150 control women. Association was evaluated using computed odds ratio (OR) with a 95% confidence interval (95% CI) in additive, recessive, and dominant models. After multiple comparison cor…

Relationship between lip motion detected with a compact 3D camera and swallowing dynamics during bolus flow swallowing in Japanese elderly men.

Clinical application of a swallowing function evaluation system that is minimally invasive and enables an objective evaluation is necessary. We constructed a system that can synchronise and analyse lip motion with a three-dimensional (3D) camera and swallowing dynamics with videofluoroscopy (VF) and clarified the relationship between lip movement and swallowing dynamics. A compact 3D camera was adapted to Microsoft XBox One Kinect Sensor® . We examined Kinect's accuracy and repeatability and analysed the highest measurement accuracy and repeatability of the distance between anguli oris muscles…

Herpes Simplex Virus 1 Replication, Ocular Disease, and Reactivations from Latency Are Restricted Unilaterally after Inoculation of Virus into the Lip.

Ocular herpes simplex keratitis (HSK) is a consequence of viral reactivations from trigeminal ganglia (TG) and occurs almost exclusively in the same eye in humans. In our murine oro-ocular (OO) model, herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) inoculation in one side of the lip propagates virus to infect the ipsilateral TG. Replication here allows infection of the brainstem and infection of the contralateral TG. Interestingly, HSK was observed in our OO model only from the eye ipsilateral to the site of lip infection. Thus, unilateral restriction of HSV-1 may be due to differential kinetics of virus arriv…
