A neoplasm of unknown origin in cervical and axillary lymph nodes was diagnosed as anemone cell tumor by ultrastructural examination. Three years after the initial diagnosis of anemone cell tumor, a high-grade transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder was discovered. The results of immunoperoxidase staining of the cervical lymph node, axillary lymph node, and bladder tumors for keratin, carcinoembryonic antigen, and human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) strongly suggest that the anemone cell tumors in this case represent metastases of bladder carcinoma cells capable of producing HCG.

Primary breast cancer tissue and lymph nodes were obtained from 48 patients. Estrogen receptors (ER) and progesterone receptors (PgR) were determined by a dextran-coated charcoal assay. A cytologic examination of pleural fluid was performed on a pleural lavage specimen collected at the completion of operation after pulmonary resection in 135 of 599 patients undergoing curative pulmonary resection for a non-small cell carcinoma of the lung between 1977 and 1982. We carried out experimental studies in which Vx2 carcinoma was inoculated submucosally into the esophagi of 57 rabbits. The purpose was to clarify the mode of tumor growth and lymph node metastasis of esophageal cancer. The investigation of architectonics of the vessels of the left half of the colon was performed in 52 corpses. The authors think that in carcinoma of the upper third of the sigmoid colon it is necessary to fulfil the left-side hemicolectomy, in injured median and lower thirds a resection of the sigmoid colon may be considered to be radical. Patterns of axillary lymph node metastases were analyzed in 1228 recently performed modified, radical, and extended radical mastectomies. In these specimens the position or level of lymph nodes was designated intraoperatively by the surgeon. No lymph node metastases were found in 720 (58) of the specimens while the remainder (508 or 41%) had at least one affected lymph node. The results of radiotherapy in the treatment of primary lung cancer is presented with reference to metastases in regional lymph nodes. The study involved 382 patients with histologically proven lung cancer of all cell types who, between 1945 and 1955, initially underwent definitive radiotherapy with TDF's of more than 70. The evaluable patients comprised 66 for N0, 177 for N1 and 139 for N2. Cumulative five-year survival rates for N0, N1 and N2 were 23.9%, 6.1% and 5.6%, respectively. Red blood cell, serum and tissue Mg concentrations in 100 subjects with aged 34-78, with squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The concentration of this cation in cancerous tissues was found to be about twice as high as in the unchanged homologous tissues of the host. This was accompanied by a systemic deficiency manifesting itself by a decreased Mg concentration in red blood cells, serum and muscles which became more pronounced as the disease advanced, and returned to normal after radical treatment.

Squamous carcinoma of the breast is a rare neoplasm and should not be confused with spindle cell skin carcinoma which derives from the nipple. Differential diagnosis includes other primary (e.g. medullary) carcinomas where more or less extensive zones of typical or atypical squamous metaplasia are found. The pathogenesis of this neoplasm as well as its biological behavior is discussed in the light of personal experience. Literature data are reviewed.

Successful surgical therapy for bronchogenic carcinoma depends upon an accurate lymph node assessment. Criteria were developed and reported to identify patients who would benefit from mediastinoscopy prior to thoracotomy. Our experience with 234 patients having resection of metastatic lesions of lung is reviewed. Most bilateral lung metastases were removed though a median sternotomy. Complete regression of the primary tumour was observed when a shaped apparatus loaded with 192Ir wires was used in the treatment of 6 patients with neoplasia of the hard palate, whereas very slight changes were noted in another subject.
