We present 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) chemical shifts for the most common flavonoids, a class of natural products widely present in the plant kingdom. Our data are acquired in three common NMR solvents: methanol d4, dimethyl sulfoxide d6, and pyridine d5 and may be used as a reference for isolated compounds, for detecting flavonoids within mixtures like plant extracts as shown in an example, as reference data for natural product databases, for refined training of prediction software, and for machine learning in resonance assignment and NMR-based structure elucidation. INTRODUCTION: The concept of "intestinal drinking" in this study refers to the continued absorption of alcohol in the gastrointestinal tract until adequate defecation occurs.
METHODS: A longitudinal observation of hangover symptoms and alcohol metabolites in healthy humans following binge drinking was conducted.
RESULTS: The hangover symptoms resulting from binge alcohol consumption were relieved by defecation. Following the defecation process, not only the blood ethanol levels, but also the concentrations of blood acetaldehyde, methanol, and iso-propanol, exhibited significant reductions.

The methanol extract of the rhizome of Bergenia ciliata Sternb. (Saxifragaceae) has been evaluated for its potential in a cough model induced by sulphur dioxide gas in mice. The extract exhibited significant anti-tussive activity in a dose-dependent manner, as compared with control. The antitussive activity of the extract was comparable to that of codeine phosphate (10 mg/kg body wt.), a standard anti-tussive agent. The extract at doses of 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg body wt. (p.o.) showed significant inhibition of cough reflex by 28.7, 33.9 and 44.2%, respectively, within 90 min of the experiment.

Hydroxocobalamin (OHCbl) is a powerful antidote for cyanide poisoning, via the formation of non-toxic cyanocobalamin (CNCbl). Plasmatic cobalamins were measured at 361 nm, after enrichment and purification on a short C18 precolumn (1% acetic acid; 1 ml min-1; 2 min), by back-flush elution on a C18 ODS-2 column [0.1 M sodium dihydrogenphosphate-methanol (63:27, v/v) (pH 4.0); 0.80 ml min-1]. The precision was 3.21 and 3.54% for 10 microM OHCbl and CNCbl, respectively. The method was used to study the pharmacokinetics of OHCbl and the formed CNCbl in severely poisoned patients.

Fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry was used as a detection method in a study of the extraction of urinary bile acids with octadecylsilane-bonded silica. The procedure commonly used in many laboratories was found to result in significant losses of sulfated taurine-conjugated bile acids. Losses of other double conjugates and of bile acid and bile alcohol glucuronides were also seen.
